Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is back at the Kennedy Space Center to watch her husband’s rescheduled launch on the space shuttle Endeavour, set for 8:56 a.m. ET on Monday.

“She’s looking forward to watching him launch and come back and you know it’s a big moment for all of us,” said Pia Carusone, the Arizona Democrat’s chief of staff, in an interview Sunday with CBS News.

Being able to attend the launch of astronaut husband Mark Kelly’s shuttle has been a major goal of Giffords’ rehabilitation since being shot in an assassination attempt in January.

Late last month, Giffords traveled from her rehabilitation center in Houston to Florida to watch the launch, which ended up being postponed because of a mechanical problem.

Kelly, who took some time off from training to spend weeks by his wife’s side following the shooting, will be able to talk to his wife by phone while in space.

“They’re inspiring. I know individually, as a couple – I know a lot of people have found strength in their love,” Carusone said.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), a close friend of Giffords’s, said on Thursday that she hopes Giffords will be able to return to Congress. “The progress she’s making, from what I understand, she’s on track for that to happen. Not sure when, but she’s making tremendous progress, and we’re all very proud of her,” Wasserman Schultz said when asked if Giffords will make it back to Capitol Hill.

Carusone echoed those hopes.

“We do hold the highest hope that she will recover to the point of being able to return to her first personal life in the fullest quality she can and hopefully her professional life,” she said.
