If you're so fond of pirates and think pirating is so good, why do you have a copyright symbol on your website? And why are you charging money for your art? ;-)

The best argument I've heard is this:
It is unreasonable for those in the Music Industry to push "new" technologies upon us (while suddenly phasing out the perceived "old" technology) and expect us to re-buy our entire music catalog whenever they decide this.
The "new" technologies have been systematically withheld from consumers for decades (at least) and eventually provided at a statistically-predicted, beneficial time (beneficial ONLY to the greedy hands & pockets of the Industry).
As consumers, we have been disrespected and intentionally given inferior products and technologies for many, many years, because we will continue paying for them for such a long time.
The whole notion of audio & video "piracy" forces the Industry to change. This so-called "piracy" is merely an inevitable manifestation of the Industry's malfeasance towards consumers.

Sounds like a load of BS to me. Where is the artist in this? On the scrapheap? It's bad enough getting paltry royalty rates, but having your content stolen is way out of line. There is no justification. Don't punish the artist any more than we've already been punished.

first off for every 10 dollar album a major artist sells on itunes they make about 10 cents... the labels rip and screw everyone over... they even managed to screw over indie artists. i try to make music full time and i know how it all works. downloading music helps us spread the word quite a bit. if it weren't for downloads and the internet i wouldn't know about all these amazing artists from japan, europe, africa etc...
i pretty much download music coming from major labels... buy my music coming from indie artists/honest labels/ charities...
support the artists not the label

Support the artists, indeed. But what happens when the artists' content that is sold directly to the consumer gets ripped off as well? Many writers (including myself) publish both traditionally (via established publishers) as well as publishing directly from the source (us). So we get screwed double!

Oh and i make music too :D which is released on all those fancy sites, i don't expect people to buy it... but its ok, i am probably gonna make my living dj'ing or something

I agree, I encourage my friends not to pirate.
I remind them that this is someones hard work.
But most people don't care.I don't know the solution for this, it only hurts creativity.
Maybe this is why movies suck so bad now. - 1 year ago

The solution is what you vote for, Creative Capitalism. That's why we are proud to be American silly. What did u come to believe was the reason for our soldiers to fight - So ppl would shop on Black (day after thanks-giving) what do some call it. Oh yeah, spend spend, so the wealthy find out just how much disposable waste we really have!!

- actually,....IF ONE COULD SURVIVE AT ALL,.....many "fine artists" ( of VARIOUS types ) actually WOULD,.... ABSOLUTELY,....do "their stuff" for free. ( Just sayin. )

I feel your pain! Sometimes it hard to get known without giving some stuff away and then once you've done it there is an implied expectation. The same people who think nothing about taking that free sample in the grocery store, knowing that if they like it they have to buy the product, can't seem to grasp that same concept when it comes to intangible goods i.e. intellectual property, etc..
Great article!

Thanks! What gets me is this sense of privilege and expectation these pirates seem to have. They are breaking the law by illegally putting this copyrighted material out there. For what purpose? It costs a lot of time and money for authors and publishers to put a book together. What do these pirates gain from stealing our labour? Why do they think they own it? I do not understand the mentality behind this at all.
