Right-Wing Sock Puppets Pretending to Be Liberals Assault Progressive Websites

Ignorant, peevish, narrow-minded, misinformed, livid, intolerant, they are an army of everything that's wrong with America, denizens of a weird trickster God who speaks to them with words they don't completely understand, or tints their natural interior wrath with righteous anger conferred by snake-oil preachers or haughty cable charlatans either crass or crazed, or just slyly in it for the money, or all of the above.

This minority wouldn't matter much except they are whipped into a frenzy and 'played' by cynical manipulators like Frank Luntz, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck who, in turn, wouldn't have much impact without the billions of dollars spent to spread their fetid message from such right-wing corporatists as Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch and the Koch brothers.

But beneath the second-tier video fictions of James O’Keefe and Andrew Breitbart, and the hollow-headed bleating of the various ozone-inhabiting creatures who will never be president like Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin, and even in the shadow of the disingenuous theocratic mushpile that is David Barton’s twisted view of our history, exists a well-funded Republican netherworld of PR propagandists and marketing hucksters busy dreaming up unethical new ways to undercut Obama and the Democrats.

    • The only thing this article misses is that it claims Obama is a Democrat, he`s clearly a progressive conservative, perhaps even further to the right than Reagan.

    • So how is one supposed to prove who is a sock puppet? Based on this silly article, you can only assume who is a sock puppet.

Lemme guess how one can tell who is a sock puppet; it's someone who doesn't agree with the crowd and doesn't tow the official line, right?

This article is NOT so silly, it is factual. Not long ago there was a video out of collage students teaching classes on how to infiltrate progressives/liberal web sites. How to tell who`s who is another story tho. I`ve personally run into "green party" people who I`ve had NO doubt are shills just by the shear contempt they have for democrats. If a REAL Green party ever takes off it will need to be at least able to work with Dems, & must understand it would be picking up the torch where democrats dropped it, & that it`s base would be coming from the left & disparaging it is counter effective to growing a Green base. Thats the perfect area to set shills on & divide the left. I`m a 25 year hard core dem who doesnt shy away from the word liberal, & I grow more & more upset with their continual move to the right, & at the look the other way dems because they are in love with Ronald Obama. A divided left strengthens Republicans... Think about it... & if I didnt feel the Green party was more shill then the right pill, I`d already be there...

I'm not saying that they don't exist. I know there are programs like this and I remember the story of the college student training to infiltrate forums (they were allegedly liberatarians) Also, the Israeli government pays young students to go and post Zionist bullshit and Israeli propaganda all over the comment sections of mainstream media articles.

I've spent a fair amount of time on forums where people think there are infiltrators and I'm just saying that there is no way you can prove that is a sock-puppet. All it leads to are silly accusations and paranoia.

I think the biggest concentration of shills actually comes from libertarians, up until recently there wasnt very many of them, & the ones that existed understood that they could never meet their means threw Right Wing politics, & were aligned with the left. IMO The massive influx of Libertarians are shills (willingly & unwittingly) sent out in desperation to do damage control after the Bush regime damaged the Republican brand. By demogauging the left along with the right... it left/leaves people thinking, ya, these guys are just as bad. Then you have Republicans who were/are to embarrassed to keep calling themselves Republicans & latched on to the Libertarian name, that still allows them to keep preaching the ludicrous policy that got us here while trying to sell it under a different brand. It`s impossible to be both a Conservative & a Libertarian, in politics & in definition... which is why Ron Paul is a sham.

Most Libertarians I know believe in Classical Liberalism="Classical liberalism is a philosophy committed to the ideal of limited government, liberty of individuals including freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and free markets." Libertarians are for all the social freedom the left wants they just happen to believe freemarket capitalism is the best economic policy.Libertarians agree with the left on staying out of war ,freedom to put what you want in your body, right to marry who you choose ect.The disagreement comes from economic philosophy. As a Libertarian the truth for me lays neither with the right nor the left ,I have agreements and disagreements with both sides.I am starting to notice that this site seems to want only dem opinions though and tends to be a little hostile when an opposing view is brought up.

ITA. Besides, it gives them and their agenda more attention, which I think is a bad idea.

When it comes down to it, they are just trying to advance their ideas/agenda, much like we do here at Current.

In fact, much to my dismay, there isn't a lot different in how Obama as president acts compared to how GWBush the president acts.

What a lot of people don't get, or don't want to admit, is that the criticisms progressives/liberals launch at GWBush could easily be launched at Obama, too.

Well if you're a l33t hax0r then you can trace the IP addresses of every individual you come across and look for matches. That's a dead give away of sock puppetry. And that's not paranoia. They're really out there. Everywhere. I was not paid to post this.

I disagree with that. I think paranoia and accusations would be on the extreme side, and most people are aware that there's not really any way to tell and therefor don't point fingers. I think it's good to be aware, if only in the back of your brain, that this sort of thing goes on so that you can steel yourself and make more rational, thought-out opinions.

    • I would not be surprised if that "Amazon" person who posted here a while back was one of them.

She claimed to be a Liberal but was vehemently anti-Obama.

Then, after she was repeatedly down-voted, she softened her rhetoric, then left.

You just did talking point #6 on JimmyHeart's list!

There is a diference between being upset with some decisions of the Obama administration, and spitting venom.

Any true progressive Liberal realizes the Obama administration made a great deal of progress- not as much as some might like, but a HELL of a lot beter than the quagmire the Republican party would have done to us.

When any true progressive Liberal has doubts about if they were right voting for Obama, all I have to do is say two words:

      Sarah Palin.

That clears those doubts away, you betcha.

"new ways" don't have to be dreamed up. There is enough real life right up front to see.
When this site begins to put under a microscope the influence George Soros has in the media and this country and treat him the same as the other side of the aisle I will pay attention to crap such as this. The hate speech and attempts to convince through insults in this poor excuse for an op-ed is just business as usual for the controllers.

Except, of course, that the whole attack on George Soros was just made up by the right-wing media when the rest of us started to notice the Koch brothers dirty scheming.

So they invented a scapegoat on the left to distract simple-minded drones like you so the Koch brothers can continue to pull your puppet strings.

Why is Soros always brought up as an evil person?
He's into Democracy and has promoted it worldwide for decades..and he promotes environmental causes and he DOES NOT have dozens of think tanks with hundreds of the richest corporate heads having secret meetings on how to push their radical agenda....less taxes for the rich and make the working middle class pay for it with big changes to social programs...Medicare, Social Security, public education, etc.....

Soros is not nearly as rich as the Koch's but the right wants to push his name into every issue and make him out to the be the guy that's trying to destroy our country, our Democracy..... when it's really the right wing uber-rich oligarchs that are doing it.

So, you are saying people care enough about politics to post about it for free, but no one cares about politics enough to post about it for money?

Or are you saying that people care about politics enough to give up their lives for causes, but they would not care enough to play pretend on the internet?

      Wow, your comment is funny.

You just did a bunch of the talking points in JimmyHeart's list!

You assert you are a "radical", when every post I have ever seen you make has been Conservative.

You claim that the diference is a "false dichotomy"- just like the article says you would!

Then I would encourage you to read more. If you do, you will see a more nuanced person than the conservative you assume me to be.

Do conservatives support gay marriage, ending DADT, the President on his decision to not enforce DOMA, closing Gitmo, ending the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya, stopping the enforcement of pot laws, rescinding the sentencing of non-violent drug offenders, single payer health care, transparent govt processes, an end to the revolving door between the govt K St and Wall St? I didn't think so, yet I support these things. Not everything is stereotypes and pigeon holes.

If you ever called "her" out she'd cry victimhood.
"She" sounded to me like an alt account for one of our worst rightwing, racist trolls- Aypsis.

The thing is, these people aren't very smart, so their sock puppetry is very easy to spot. That's a constant. They're basically self defined morons: to start with they have to be extremists for their beliefs, then they have to be stupid enough to go on websites and pretend the crazy extreme opposite of their already mad ideas and keep up that poor charade while acting out their sock-puppet identity.

      The end result is childish.

Are you aware that political canvassers go door to door, and place phone calls to campaign for their candidate?

Then, they are paying to influence individual voters, one at a time, so you think they would not have one guy write a post that could influence hundreds of people simultaneously?

Post their faces on every telephone pole across the country. Offer a bounty for ears. Carry a stick and whip them in public. Not because they disagree with the rest of us but because they are stupid. Maybe we can beat the stupid out of them. Once hit the dumb usually don't make the same mistake twice. • Ha! It's the intellectual sheep in wolves' clothing - a desperate tactic for sure! The only thing that sort of bothers me about this article is that I think it's the duty of progressives/liberals to continue be very critical and not become captured by a runaway system hurling down the track on the corporate gravy train. While Right Wing Republicanism is seemingly becoming as flightless as the dodo bird in 2012, I wish I could say I was excited about what the other guys are bringing to their Party for the big erection. Will it be a bottle of War Viagra and Wall Street amyl-economic-poppers or beer, pretzels and jobs for the middle class? Time will tell...
