Ford today announced its smallest engine ever, a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder EcoBoost destined for the global small-car stage and likely to wind up in the Fiesta here in the States.

The Blue Oval promises the 3-cylinder will deliver the performance of a four; full specs for the powerplant will be unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The news comes on the same day that Ford announced its first 8-speed automatic transmission -- wholly designed, engineered and built by Ford -- as well as a new electronic continuously variable hybrid transmission.
