Exxon pipe burst into Yellowstone River

The river has no dams on its way to its confluence with the Missouri River just across the Montana border in North Dakota. It was unclear how far the plume might travel. Cleanup crews deployed booms and absorbent material as the plume moved downstream at an estimated 5 to 7 mph. "The parties responsible will restore the Yellowstone River," Mont. Gov. Brian Schweitzer said.
(See a timeline of the BP Oil Spill.)
A 600-foot-long black smear of oil coated Jim Swanson's riverfront property just downstream from where the pipe broke. "Whosever pipeline it is better be knocking on my door soon and explaining how they're going to clean it up," Swanson said as globules of oil bubbled to the surface. "They say they've got it capped off. I'm not so sure."
ExxonMobil spokeswoman Pam Malek said the pipe leaked an estimated 750 to 1,000 barrels of oil for about a half-hour before it was shut down. Other Exxon officials had estimated up to 42,000 gallons of crude oil escaped.
Duane Winslow, Yellowstone County director of disaster and emergency services, said the plume was dissipating as it moved downstream. "We're just kind of waiting for it to move on down while Exxon is trying to figure out how to corral this monster," Winslow said. "The timing couldn't be worse," said Steve Knecht, chief of operations for Montana Disaster and Emergency Services, who added that the plume was measured at 25 miles near Pompeys Pillar National Monument. "With the Yellowstone running at flood stage and all the debris, it makes it dang tough to get out there to do anything."
Brent Peters, the fire chief for the city of Laurel about 12 miles west of Billings, said the rupture in the 12-inch diameter pipe occurred late Friday about a mile south of Laurel. He said about 140 people in the Laurel area were evacuated early Saturday due to concerns about possible explosions and the overpowering fumes. He said they were allowed to return at about 4 a.m. after fumes had decreased.

What we’ve learned since the spill is that federal regulators warned Exxon about problems with its pipeline in 2009. Then Friday happened, spilling oil into one of the world's most beautiful places.
Please write President Obama to demand a ban on new oil pipelines until our communities are safe from the ones already in the ground.
Here is the full story. In July 2009, federal inspectors found evidence that an above-ground span of Exxon’s pipeline in Montana had become submerged under a creek and was piling up debris. Nearly 20 months later, in March of this year, Exxon reported that it was “evaluating control measures to keep future debris from accumulating over the pipeline.”
Last weekend, in the same region cited in the inspection, the same pipeline ruptured during record flooding of the Yellowstone River. Oil has already been found hundreds of miles away.
Exxon’s spill in Montana is just the latest in a string of accidents as long as the industry is old. And while Big Oil says that it is learning from its mistakes, even its newest pipelines can’t seem to contain the increasingly corrosive oil, much of which is mined from Canada’s tar sands.
Please tell President Obama to make our communities safe from more pipeline accidents.
We don’t need more pipelines. And we don’t need more dirty oil. Most analysts actually expect a steady decline in U.S. demand for oil. What we do need is a system of regulations and penalties that keep our communities safe from the pipelines already in the ground.

If no biofuels are used biofuel tanker accidents can't explode all over passenger cars nearby, in tunnels, on bridges, driving down the highway either. Air+steam combining IN THE CYLINDER makes a plenty powerful explosion to push a car down the highway.
PLENTY POWER.
I would remind you the early Volkswagen bug only had 57 horsepower AND PEOPLE LOVED THAT CAR. Being air-cooled was a mistake, being fuel-cooled from compressed air ended that.
Biofuels would be very good for running home-based electrical generators and END MAIN POWER GRID UMBILICAL CORD DEPENDENCE. Homes don't drive down the highway and have fender~benders! hahaha I would suggest developing a window-mounted biofuel generator combo that plugs into the Wall Outlet beneath the window frame and finish these electric meters off with one swift blow to their head.

More criminality from Exxon Mobil, the leader in worldwide environmental terrorism. A pipeline UNDER the Yellowstone? WTF did they expect? Now you know that was allowed to happen by some official tool in Montana as yet unnamed. And it is as well another failure of local and/or federal oversight, the norm when bucks are waved around by big energy.
I've seen a Village Board grant a EIS variance to a developer to put a condo development on top of Tennessee Valley high pressure gas pipelines here in the Hudson Valley - river view condos with a potential view of outer space! The developer was the single highest campaign contributor to Gov. George Pataki at the time.
I will celebrate Independence Day when the environment and the people are free from the predations and poisonings of our enforced dependance on fossil fuels; of course THAT will take another revolution. If the trout are lost - Smash the State!

Not just from this Exxon spill either. There are flood waters submerging large areas of the very best farmlands we have from North Dakota to Louisiana. Remember that there are also thousands of cars, trucks, filling stations, storage tanks and so on and so on submerged too.
Crude oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, motor oil and everything else from sewage to plastic is being carried along and deposited on the farmlands by those flood waters.

@Jahvega, there are countless oil spills each year that do not make the news. I think this is another sign that our way of living on oil needs to change. Many of the pipe lines in America must be pushing more than 40 years of age. I wonder what the shelf life of a pipe is?
we have nothing to worry about, according to AOPL (Association of Oil Pipelines), "Pipelines are extremely safe. From 2006-2008, there were only 0.7 incidents per thousand miles, a decrease of 63% from 1999-2001.
Pipelines also generally have a better safety record (deaths, injuries, fires/explosions) than other modes of oil transportation."This information is taken from their web site AOPL... Everyone please disperse, there is nothing to see here.
Oh yeah, and deep ocean oil drilling is super safe too, i mean they been doing it for a while, and only one accident. The statistics must be awesome. Kind of like flying in a plane, sure they don't crash often, but when they do you are pretty much a goner.

Complacency sets in with less pipe breaks. Telling people "not to worry" hehehe has the reverse effect. America is sliding down many steep slopes. Today we slide into a pool of crude oil, tomorrow we slide into a vat of radioactive wastes, while every day we live in the midst of plentiful energies that are being purposely locked away, hoarded.
It is an interesting situation to observe people in control trying to force Evolution by destroying today's life forms. Or force the Rapture. Or prove the Rapture false.

And the coverup begins.
" ExxonMobil and Montana's governor are at odds over the damage from an oil spill on the Yellowstone River.
ExxonMobil Pipeline Co. president Gary Pruessing says flyovers had shown most of the damage was limited to a 10-mile stretch of river. But Gov. Brian Schweitzer dismisses the claim as premature.
The Democratic governor says Exxon Mobil needs to get more personnel to inspect the situation close-up. He also slammed Pruessing's statement to reporters that no injured wildlife had been found. He says it's "silly" to make that claim at this stage.
He says a physical inspection of the river in small boats is needed soon."

I saw a segment on CNN last night---Exxon claiming the "no wildlife was harmed" by their oil spill.
???????????????????? The MOST stupid asinine statement you could possibly make in my opinion.
Fish weren't killed? Frogs and salamanders weren't killed? Frogs and salamanders breathe through their skin----cover their skin with oil and they suffocate. Insects eat plants----plants die when covered with oil, if you don't think so, go out pour a few quarts of oil on your grass. Frogs and fish eat insects, larger animals like birds and mammals eat frogs and fish, or plants------kill the bottom of the food chain, and wildlife at the top of the food chain starves. Humans are at the top of the food chain----kill off enough of the bottom of the food chain by putting oil into your irrigation systems that make your food chain possible----and see what happens.
No wildlife harmed-----that is not only impossible---it is just plain stupid to think so.

Their excuse for not being able to get all of this now is that the heavy rains and melting heavier snows causing the flooding are moving the water faster. Imagine that. They are part of the reason for exacerbating climate change and they are now actually using it to absolve themselves from doing much about this but laying our some oil diapers. They will simply let it flow into the MIssouri to wind up in the GULF... and then raise the price of gas to pay for it.

Yep. That's an interesting point => whenever the oil companies make a mistake they just RAISE PUMP PRICES TO COVER IT... so it really doesn't matter whether some judge slaps their wrist or lowers the BOOM it always comes back to Users paying for their Mess versus the oil companies never pay for their Mess.
They're too big to fail Jan. The only answer in such a cornered situation is to throw a bear trap in the animal's face. Of course that would not be right to do, so a new technology that BRINGS COMPETITION BACK would suffice quite well.
Til competition is restored this only has a bad result. Oil companies are not the only ones doing this. The entire medical community doctors & hospitals have the same scam, and know how to use it. In Virginia business owners know all the judges rule in their favor, so they use the same hammer also.
This nation Prides itself on Freedom but in real terms we are a Communist country. The U.S. has embraced the practice of Communist Theology.

The "marriage" of Democracy with Capitalism is pretty much guaranteed to devolve into Communism, depending of course how you define Communism. Supposedly Competition is to hold the Consumer on the high ground but it doesn't take long for Businesses to realize that results in them constantly BEING STRANGLED TO DEATH so they are forced to join hands against Consumers and gain back the high ground.
To me that means No Competition, and that means Communism.
So like the dentists all in a city, or state, will all agree to raise the price on dental charges. That's Communism by my definition. Doctors and hospitals ditto, more Communism (set prices agreed upon in back rooms).
I fail to see where America is anything but one big group of Communists.

Communism sets in like a vile cancer and grows itself into permanence.
Dentists charge whatever they like and cackle like a gaggle of turkeys at their nice homes and vintage automobile collection, or expensive paintings, and brag how they send their children to the best colleges, and buy their women/wife the nice rings from the best jeweler in town [who is in reality also a Communist crony doing the same scam with local jewelers].
The ultimate result of this corporate kudzu is what we see happening today => a gross & widespread CONTEMPT FOR OTHER CITIZENS. Pipelines breaking who cares? Who gives a damn? => because tomorrow we Communists still WIN. Jan, this is why your efforts continue to fail and will continue to fail, because the football field is operating by the Communist playbook while you mistakenly think this is a nation of free & equality-minded people.
It is not. You and me, we're the PREY. They destroy us piece by piece every day which means they win piece by arm & leg (ours) every day. Whatever objectives the Founders of this Nation envisioned we have turned aside into Communism: fully-praciticed Communism.
I can give you an excellent example of that when we moved into these apartments each month we were charged an increasing amount for Water, when in fact our water usage was quite stable. The owners of Peters Creek Apartments in Roanoke Virginia had taken the recent drought as a springboard to overcharge for water, so when we moved in, the drought ended (2003) but, they had gotten used to getting $35-$55.00 per month extra in their pockets from 160 apartments. Do the Math.
I figured out what they were doing and told the County people. The owners were quietly forced to sell, nothing was ever printed in the newspaper because they all knew they had to protect their positions over Consumers, and that if any of them gave the situation any Press -as should've happened- they would have all been forced to compensate the hundreds of [UGH, YUCK} APARTMENT RENTER SCUM, their enemies, the ones they all knew they had to remain in domination over at all costs.
Democracy and Truth be Damned. So Jan, when you wonder what has happened and why we live every day like pigs in wet mud slop begging for food to be tossed our way, there's your reason. Communism degrades everybody down to the Lowest Common Denominator.
If this was a proper Democracy Jan we would be in an upward spiral headed for Greatness higher than the fictitious Krypton ever had. This is not the America I was brainwashed as a child to believe exists. This is a load of pig crap. My last good chewing tooth split down the middle over a month ago, and my dental insurance decided not to pay for a dental cleaning so I got a bill for $209.00, and they all cackle amongst themselves LIKE THE COMMUNISTS THEY ARE because they know my position is stomping material and fodder to be thrown into the deep.
I'm not complaining, just explaining. This is what the US has down-spiralled into a long time ago actually. That's why we keep using Crude Oil. 1776 is no longer the rule of law in this land.

The internet has become pretty much a vehicle for porn, advertising and snuff games.
Maybe those of us who care need a different strategy.
All revolutions start with information and persuasion.
"THEY" think they have everything locked up with no way to allow any point of view but their own get any attention.
Everyone who is reading this has a computer. Most have a printer. If we all begin to copy these stories off on our printers and then go out and distribute the copies----word will get out.
Jan, you recently went by a BP station and gave the finger to the customers---how many minds did you change? How many people came over to the idea that we do not need oil or the environmental damage it causes?
What if you had handed out 100 flyers with pictures and descriptions of the environmental damages? You've reached 100 people. A few of them might start thinking about things. A few of them might change their minds about what they do and how they vote. A few of them might pass the flyers on to others.
The American Revolution started because of flyers that carried the message of resistance to tyrany far and wide. They were called "broadsides" because the effect was just as powerful as all the cannons on one side of ship firing at the same time---a broadside. Thomas Paine of Virginia, and Samuel Adams of Massachusetts were the most noted of the broadsiders. Without them, there would have been no American Revolution.
I see no reason why the same thing could not be done today. Everyone reading this post has a computer-----and with a printer----you have everything you need to make your own broadsides. But even better than Thomas Paine or Sam Adams----you can add pictures.
You can even print a galley copy off on your printer----take it to a printing company and have 1,000 copies made for less than $50 in most cases---$30 for single color.

I've done that many times before. Handed out flyers I made, placed them on parked cars in parking lots, etc.. Saw people throwing them in the trash. Maybe some didin't, but all I can say about BP is, at least I showed up. If people across this country walked into their local BP today and did the same thing that might make a difference too. Then again, I think the main problem is that people have become apathetic, distracted and just plain don't care. It will take more than a flyer to change that, but I might try it again.

Yes Jan, most of them will end up in the trash-----you are right. But if we hand out a hundred and only reach person----that is one person more than there were. And if that one person hands out a hundred, and only reaches one person more, then there are two people more than there were..............................
All we can do is try, the worst we could possibly do is not any worse than what is happening already.
Remember---we are fighting over a century of greed, billions of $$$, and brainwashing telling people that they HAVE to have oil to live. I think the first thing we need to do is to make it known to people that we don't have to give up anything to get rid of oil, except wars, high prices, economic and environmental damage etc. etc. etc....................
It is being done right now in other places with biofuels......................Brazil, Germany, Sweden, Argentina, even China, Byeolorussia, Ukraine, Pakistan and many others. We need to make people see that that do NOT HAVE to use oil. We have other choices.

-------" "The parties responsible will restore the Yellowstone River," Mont. Gov. Brian Schweitzer said."----------

-----" ExxonMobil spokeswoman Pam Malek said the pipe leaked an estimated 750 to 1,000 barrels of oil for about a half-hour before it was shut down. Other Exxon officials had estimated up to 42,000 gallons of crude oil escaped."----
Somewhere between 10 tons and 6,000 tons. They should know how much they pumped, and how much they got out-----it doesn't seem to be so hard to figure out to me. Take the amount you had when you started pumping, then the amount you had afterward and subtract.
I suspect their "estimates" have a lot more to do with news releases than with math. I call it lying.
---------" Duane Winslow, Yellowstone County director of disaster and emergency services, said the plume was dissipating as it moved downstream."-------
Oil does not "dissipate" in water---it spreads out and covers a wider area. If you take a newspaper, unfold it and lay all the pages out on the floor----it doesn't "dissipate"----it covers a larger area.
---------" In a statement, ExxonMobil said it was sending a team to help with cleanup, and that state and federal authorities had been alerted to the spill. The ExxonMobil Pipeline Company "deeply regrets this release," it said. Crews were putting out absorbent material along stretches of the river in Billings and near Laurel, but there were no attempts at capturing oil farther out in the river. In some areas oil flowed underneath booms and continued downstream."-------
Somebody call Rosie and tell her to bring the Bounty towels. She's going to need a LOT of Bountys to pick up 6,000 tons of oil.

I assumed it was ignorance due to the lack of truth...rather than, ignorance is bliss mentality ....the sitcom, pro wrestling ,American Idol watching , soft drink , lite beer swilling , TV guide, celebrity news reading idiots that make up half this Country ,who are allowed a vote based on nothing ,but repetitive talking points from cable news air heads... These people will never learn anything...and changing their minds ??? You need one that functions first!
We are fighting major corporations....corrupt politicians on both sides and all those idiots that would elect a freaking Bush/ Cheney ticket....we are out numbered and out gunned....but ...we can hope for a miracle or that it get's so damn bad they are forced to wake up.
Spreading the truth on the internet is still a way to acquire those ignorant due to dishonest media BS...all we can do is to keep trying
sorry about the rant...lately I get totally frustrated when the obvious is so thoroughly ignored. - 11 months ago

the problem is that what exxon would be "fined" (i say this with quotations because odds are they aren't) is billions of dollars less than they made by taking shortcuts.

we may be overlooking the silver lining here. The country is desperate to raise revenues to cover the debt so here's the plan. Set up some black lights at Yellowstone falls and the lake, hire Pink Floyd to play Dark Side of the Moon until the first snowfall. $150 per person. If it's not enough to cover the debt hire Prestone to spill 15 or 20 tankers of Antifreeze in the river so we can keep The Pink Floyd gig going year round.

CAPTION: READY FOR AUTOPSY. BABY DOLPHIN, ONE OF MANY WASHED UP ON GULF BEACHES, 10 MONTHS AFTER GULF OIL SPILL
--------------------------You are correct, he does.
What makes it worse is that he is running as a DEMOCRAT--we are supposed to be PRO-ENVIRONMENT!
The Rolling Stone ran two articles on Obama's complicity in the coverup of the BP/Gulf ecological disaster. There have been numerous articles in different publications about it, too. AND he recently okayed drilling in Alaska.
Yet there are STILL plenty of Democrats ready to vote for Obama in 2012!
If Obama is reelected it will show the world that Democrats are as bad as Republicans when it comes to respecting our environment.

Obama is stuck in the same hole as all politicians. He started out with a NO New Drilling policy. However, due to the change in the economy, there is a new political push to open up drilling in Alaska, and increase off shore deep drilling in the gulf and in other areas.
The politics behind these things are such that when the ball gets rolling, it is very hard to stop. The ball was rolling in the NO NEW drilling direction, but President G. W. Bush made strong headway into getting this changed. Obama is not an environmentalist, he is a practicalist. That means if the politics are right, he just might push through a change in the law. Nothing personal, but he is not Al Gore.
I like Obama and support him, so don't think I am trying to slander the guy.

EXXON, once again f**king up our environment. So let's allow Obama and the State Dept.approve the Keystone XL pipeline and not say a word about it because they are Democrats and play politics with this now to really see some more real devastation to our country for profit. I'm so done with being nice about this.

I wonder if this will get reported on any of the major networks. Exxon is heavily invested in the media, its the 4th of July weekend, and there is that Keystone XL pipeline drama; just the first few factors that corporate media may try to avoid discussing the event.
