    • Artemis6 posed a intriguing question here.
She asked: "Why not get together and build one?"
I love that idea of course, but naturally, having directed private and non-profit building projects, that evokes an immediate short list of necessary elements (and a reasonable amount of caution) on my part.

Given time, place, money, labor, and skill in a well-defined plan (both in construction, and in use) it might possibly have a chance of succeeding.

Although this is where the wonders of concentrated capital have the greatest advantage, I'd allow that there are still some slim chances of collaborative success.

I'd have to take a look at the probable cost, but I could be persuaded to commit a year or so of effort to a credible effort and some resources to do this.
Could a sensible plan be put together that would raise enough capital to effectively carry this through?
Are there a handful of people who would actually put let's say half the cost of a new car into a venture to build an operating airship?

To pay for it's construction I'd imagine it would have to move passengers and or goods around for a year or two at least.

Here's my morning coffee proposal: if enough money could be raised under a credible organization and building plan, I'd be willing to provide a place in California to construct it, and a $20,000 initial investment in it.

      Anyone else?

Surely, there must be an on-line course for that....
(and, in this day and age in the US, one can begin to see the overwhelming entrepreneurial necessity for new lines of work....)

A very useful skill. Be happy to hear about that.
Incidentally, I contacted one of the proposed airship ventures which presented itself as having trials of its prototype in two places this year; neither, as it turns out, is true.
As in many visionary concepts this field, (if you'll pardon the reference) seems especially prone to be driven primarily by hot air.
Not that I'm discouraged. I've found most everything truly worthwhile takes effort, time and persistence.

That might be a good small step forward, but my sense of a practical application would be an airship that carry at least two people (four being more practical) and the lift capacity to move the weight of durable cab shell (maybe super light carbon fiber) and a couple hundred pounds of supplies.

    • Thanks for the post. Quite a few ideas I hadnt heard of before, like the vertically configured ones that seem designed to be propelled by wind like sailboats in the sky. Also it seems accurate to believe that airships would first become popular as luxurious travel alternatives for the rich and as surveillance craft for governments (of course over their own territories).

A new set of airfields would have to be developed to cater to these crafts because mixed use with props and jets would create severe accident risks.

The air sailing crafts seem perfect for racing. A new sport for the year 2030. The overall accident rate would probably be quite high. But at some stage we may all become less squeamish and grow to accept new challenges as an inevitable feature of life as all of us compete to conquer the 21st century.

Can you imagine it ? A transport system nor based on oil ? Airships , e maglev trains and E vehicles . Much quieter . More beautiful . The soft sound of rotating propellers and wheels . Music could be heard from afar . We could smell the scent of flowers , drifting .... the scent of spring . But the corporate world said NO . So we will be haunted by what would have been , until we fulfill it .

    • So cool.
      Thanks, Artemis.
My absolute favorite reverie is to muse about the design and construction of airships. This is a great list to monitor and see how far along these designs are, and will go, in the short term.
As Tony Stark said about Scarlett Johansson; " I want one."
