Richard Handl was detained for unauthorised possession of nuclear material when police found quantities of radium, americium and uranium in his flat.
He told the BBC he bought some of the material off the internet.

This is not new and has been done before, you do not need to be a nuclear engineer, or physicist, or even able to much more than basic math and have average reading comprehension.
Do a Google search on David Hahn, he is the best known of several, at least several, that have done this type of activity. There have been many magazine articles in the past 40 years that give a great amount of the detail needed to build everything from mini reactors to A bombs. Including a very famous report on the secrets of the hydrogen bomb, published in the late 60's or early 70's. I will not give any more of the specifics of what magazines or when, but it is all available if one wants to look. It is likely you will die from radiation exposure shortly after building it unless you really know what you were doing, but it can be done by amateurs. - 10 months ago

I have read about people attempting to do this. It's definitely not for amateurs. The thought of achieving a chain reaction (albeit very small) would subject a person to massive amounts of radiation.
I just watched an interesting documentary today called "Countdown to Zero." One of their talking points was how easy it would be to make a Hiroshima-style bomb. The most difficult task would be in procuring the nuclear material.
Scared the shit out of me.

So I should ask permission about building this hadron collider in my basement? Damn. And it was almost done.

Heh...well, at least he had the sense to use the kitchen, that way clean-up would have been a lot easier. Just wash those split atoms right down the drain.....*

If he was smart enough to do this in a kitchen with out killing any one I say they give the man an education and a job in nuclear physics.

Not physics really... he was just following instructions written by those who understand the science. Basically he demonstrated that he can read, that he can perform fairly menial tasks as instructed, and that he does not know enough to realize when his actions risk public safety... so he should work at a nuclear power plant!

Darwin award nominee? Off the grid? Well, while shopping at Lowe's the other day, an "associate" asked me, "What project are you working on today?" to which I responded, "Well, I am putting together a small Thermonuclear device, but some of the parts are hard to find." The response was a kinda glazed look on this post teen "associate."

Well, it's one way of going off the grid. Gotta give the guy credit for trying.
But it's the idea that the guy was able to procure materials like uranium (fissile? who knows?) on the internet that seems kind of disturbing.
P.S. I think a kitchen is probably not the best place to perform such a project. Maybe the basement would have been a better location?

Indeed. I wonder what his neighbors are thinking right about now. I think that just might fall under whatever the Swedes call a public nuisance.

A Swedish man who tried to set up a nuclear reactor in his kitchen at home has admitted his plan was "crazy".
Richard Handl said he had just been "curious" and wanted to see if he would be able to split an atom.
Police were called to his flat in Angelholm in southern Sweden after he got in touch with Sweden's radiation authority to check if what he was doing was legal.
Mr Handl said he would stick to reading books about physics from now on.
Mr Handl, who is 31 and unemployed, told the BBC World Service he had bought the radioactive materials on the internet and from Germany.
He had been working on the experiment for around six months and posted regular updates on his blog.
He was questioned by police, who confiscated his nuclear materials as well as his computer.
"I had it under control, it was not so dangerous," he told the BBC.
But he added: "It was pretty stupid."
It is unclear what will happen next in the police inquiry. Mr Handl said he expected a fine.
