With no end to drought in sight, "every farmer will feel the effects of climate change"

JanforGore
The driest 10-month period on record for Texas has devastated the state and its crops. The National Weather Service warned Monday:

THERE IS LITTLE TO SUGGEST ANY END TO THE DROUGHT

Every state — along with much of Asia — has been hit by record temperatures this summer. And thanks in large part to extreme weather around the globe, food prices are stuck at record levels, causing hardship for tens of millions:

Dr. Andrew Dessler, a professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&M University, emailed TP Green, that while Gov. Perry may deny climate science:

There are dozens of credible atmospheric scientists in Texas at institutions like Rice, UT, and Texas A&M, and I can confidently say that none agree with Gov. Perry’s views on the science of climate change. This is a particularly unfortunate situation given the hellish drought that Texas is now experiencing, and which climate change is almost certainly making worse.

Global warming is certainly making the drought hotter, which creates a vicious cycle, since the higher temps dry out the earth, but the drier it gets, the hotter its gets, as the NWS explains below.

Yet, the dots aren’t being connected for the public by and large. “In Coverage of Extreme Weather, Media Downplay Climate Change” as a Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting analysis recently concluded.

Indeed, I just saw NBC Evening News tonight, which explained that we are seeing record food prices and that extreme weather is a major contributor, but had no mention whatsoever of climate change.

The dividing line between good climate reporting and bad climate reporting is almost always whether the reporter talked to real climate scientists. Typically, the more a reporter talks to, the better the story.

That’s a key reason why ABC News has been one of the few major media outlets to explain the connection between extreme weather and global warming (see links below). And they did so last night. Indeed, they went beyond the connection between global warming and extreme weather to the key climate impact on crops and food prices:

Great quote by climatologist Heidi Cullen, “When you crank up the heat, when you globally warm the planet, you’re going to see more extreme events.”

Governor Rick Perry, who failed to stop the drought with his prayer proclamation, yesterday dismissed any worries about the impact of the drought on Texas, saying “we’ll be fine. As my dad says, it’ll rain. It always does.“ He is not only unaware of the recent climate studies warning of permanent drought in the region (see literature here), but also the stunning warning from National Weather Service that there is no end in sight to the drought:

    • The Phoenix area has now had their 3rd major dust bowl storm. Nothing to see here, move along. HAHAHAHA Unable to see in a dust storm! I kill me! No need to worry folks that sound you hear, it's just your skin cracking from severe dryness, and the red, that's just blood escaping, great for your complexion.

Rub dirt into the skin cracks that'll stop it (Old Farmer's Almanac trick).

    • As we all have seen too many times, the neoconservative climate change deniers will continue to claim that they have not made a mistake, and that the earth is warming, but it is due to some natural cycle, and that scientists don't agree that man is responsible for his own demise. I wonder if they would call it a man made problem if we had a nuclear war, or if they would claim it as an act of god, because the book of revelations said there would be an end of days.

Our only logical option, and we had better take it now, is to vote out of office every single Republican in any position of responsibility, at both the state and federal levels. They have left us no choice in the matter.

We cannot save our society if we give these morons even one more year to make decisions, or to block what we must do to reverse climate change...if it is not too late already.

I can't help but wonder where we would be today, both economically, and thermally, if Al Gore hadn't been cheated out of the Presidency in 2000.

"...the neoconservative climate change deniers [**who denies that climate changes?**] will continue to claim that they have not made a mistake [**science is an ongoing process, scientists make mistakes all the time and rectify them whenever new evidence or data is available, and believe me, the science is not settled**], and that the earth is warming [agreed, the earth is, or was warming**], but it is due to some natural cycle [**can you prove conclusively that it is not due to some natural cycle or other external forcing, because no-one else has successfully proven that theory**], and that scientists don't agree that man is responsible for his own demise [**what has man's demise got to do with anything? If you think any warming is bad, why? how much colder would you like to be?**]. I wonder if they would call it a man made problem if we had a nuclear war, or if they would claim it as an act of god [**rather a silly question, don't you think?**], because the book of revelations said there would be an end of days."

"Our only logical option, and we had better take it now, is to vote out of office every single Republican in any position of responsibility"

So it's all about politics now? And you want to reverse climate change? Surely by reversing climate change you mean having a non-changing climate? When in the history of this planet has the climate ever been non-changing?
      What is the correct climate?
      When was the climate right?
Do you really think that if Al Gore had been president your weather would be better today, that the earth would suddenly have been transformed into a planet where ice melted at the correct rate, droughts were only hours long, and the occasional rain shower was always seen as a welcome sight by all the happy peoples of this now green and prosperous planet?

    • We as a people have wasted to much time catering tto the deniers of global warming and it ihas cost us dearly. It is now time to kick these conartists to the curb and start planning for the survival of the human race.

Yes, just like the same pseudo scientists and think tank mouthpieces who lied about tobacco. They killed people with those lies and they're doing it again. Therefore I agree, time to kick them to the curb where they belong and get on with the business of our survival. They're BS excuses are the greatest dog and pony show ever, paid for by polluters, liars and anti-regulation bigots who live in their own selfish bubbles.

We are now seeing excessive drought causing billions in crop failure, livestock loss, soil moisture evaporation and other changes to ecosystems that will take decades to recover and not only in Texas, but in Africa, Asia, and parts of Europe. But notice how the oil lovers only want you to focus on one area instead of seeing the entire simultaneous picture and trend, because they know it reinforces what we have been warned about for decades. There are times when you have to just drown out the noise and focus on the solution. This is one of those times.

Y'know old girl, one day you'll actually come up with a credible statement. You spew out the same old trash on a daily basis, the same worn-out keywords, the same old dodging of questions you cannot answer.

Prove, with verifiable information, that people here with views different to yours are being paid to write their comments - or shut up.
Prove their links to 'polluters' - or shut up.
Prove their links to big oil - or shut up!!!
If you want some credibility, try addressing the comments instead of just throwing accusations.

So what, do you want me to go away and deprive me of my fun? I mean, my heart bleeds at your devotion to the Gore-Meister, but shouldn't you be doing something more important like cringing over the massive ice loss in the Arctic, or the rising seas that threaten to swamp us at any moment, or looking for more weather events to blame upon man's use of fossil fuels? The planet seems to be in such a drastic state, how have you got time to write comments here? Surely you should be out building an arc (with air-conditioning of course)?

yes and no, if you have marginal land being pushed to its limits, then when a cycle occurs it is far more devastating. The deserts of northern africa were jungles until the advent of agriculture and cattle. The only thing I disagree with in the ABC report is that food prices will rise "only" because of drought. Speculation is driving most of the price increases, then compound it with shortages you have a disaster compounded by shock doctrine and greed. Humans will never change. Grow food, even a little bit will help.

    • "Great quote by climatologist Heidi Cullen, “When you crank up the heat, when you globally warm the planet, you’re going to see more extreme events.”" - JanforGore.

I agree, it is a great quote - and a totally incorrect one too! But this is Heidi Cullen we're talking about, the same Heidi Cullen who said allowing meteorologists to question the findings of the failed AGW theory is
"like allowing a meteorologist to go on-air and say that hurricanes rotate clockwise and tsunamis are caused by the weather. It's not a political statement…it's just an incorrect statement."

Problem for Heidi is hurricanes do rotate clockwise - in the southern hemisphere.

In typical extremist fashion she featured Dave Roberts, who has demanded Nuremberg-style trials for "global warming deniers", on one of her shows. So, no impartiality there, and obviously sticking to her political and religious beliefs above science.

She wanted to "revoke the Seal of Approval by the American Meteorological Society for any TV weatherman who is seen to express skepticism that the human behaviour is creating a climate catastrophe."
The mark of a true leftist extremist - suppress those who do not agree with your political views.

And isn't it a shame that the remarkably clever CO2 trace gas chooses to target Texas this year, especially seeing as Texas has been cooling at the rate of -0.75F/decade according to NOAA's NCDC. Global warming? Not for Texas, it would seem!!!

We both know it's not about "climate change". We are messing up the planet through weather control, pollution, mining, agriculture, etc, etc. The planet might have warmed regardless, but we would still have the same need for awareness relative to our impact and our need to be prepared to adapt.

so you admit it IS about something...what?.....more than just a cycle? are any of us prepared for the see-saw called extreme weather? Ever? We build in flood plains, don't provide warning systems that work, (sirens are iffy) cattle and agriculture are sucking the land to death, speculators take advantage of these cycles for greed and profit. Big business sees every disaster an opportunity to squeeze us and the earth more. Toxins are killing us. animals being wiped out not by "cycles" but humanities greed for more more more. what are we doing about these things and a list of abuses on the earth? nada. zip. zilch. carping over left and right while the planet is torn to pieces. well done.

Oh yes, the earth is in such a dire state that people are living so much longer as a consequence...
Is this really about Big Business or are you just jealous at people who earn more than you?
Maybe we should return to how life was in the 17th century, things were so much better then, weren't they?

    • Rick Perry should be impeached. How he is not handling this is blatant negligence. People need to be able to connect the dots bewteen these extremes and the residual effects they are having on food and water globally. I suspect there will be many more waking up in the coming months, and they can't say they weren't warned.

Thanks to ABC for being the ONLY media outlet covering this.
