The Keystone XL pipeline must go!
Tarsands is the sign that desperation has hit the fossil fuel industry as our addiction has become dangerous for the continued sustainability of our planet. Tarsands is the wake up call regarding a moral imperative we are losing.
Consider the actions involved in extracting the bitumen tar from the sand and the process of separation that involves usage of huge amounts of water and toxic agents in making the finished product suitable for gas tanks. Consider the environmental degradation of pristine ecosystems, rivers, species and cultures. Consider the health effects and cancers related to the toxification of land, water and air that have taken lives. Consider the climate timebomb being released by the burning of this dirty toxic crude all to satisfy the greed of those who care nothing for the damage this is doing to the world you and yours will live in. This is not progress, this is insanity.
However, the fault is not just with those who process this destruction. The fault also lies with us. Those who continue to consume it in order to satiate a need that has led our environment to the breaking point. And now, Transcanada and those who seek to benefit from this destruction here wish to do so by constructing another pipeline through the heartland of this country directly threatening our water supply, our agriculture and our environment.
Starting tomorrow and going to Sept 3, people will be risking arrest in acts of peaceful civil disobedience outside the White House to tell President Obama NO regarding approving the Keystone XL pipeline.
(Caps for emphasis because this is important)
THIS IS NOW THE TIME THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA MUST HEAR YOU. THE WORLD WE ARE MAKING FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS DEPENDS ON OUR ACTIONS TODAY.
So even if all you can do is send an e-mail to the White House, you need to do it. Call, write, tweet, blog. But please, don't allow another ecocide to take place. We do have power in great numbers. We do have other energy choices. We CAN change things for the better (as the end of this video illustrates.)
But that won't happen unless we make noise by whatever means we have.
Kudos to those willing to be arrested for this important cause. I thank you, my child thanks you, I stand with you and I will do all in my power to be heard with you.
NO TO KEYSTONE XL.!

Tarring used to be reserved for bad people but now the Americans seem to be THE BAD PEOPLE. Perhaps you had hoped not being a Christian would save ya from the royal tarring.?
You miscalculated. The Hate of Satan has engulfed you also. You fought his many wars overseas with sons & daughters thrown on the funeral pyre and Satan still tars you over like a new road.
The Bible has answers. Find a Kingdom Hall while time remains!

Really? The reason they aren't processing the tarsands in Canada ~instead sending to Louisiana~ is for shipping around the world from their ports. Skip the US.
Turn yur brain on next time before you type. The screw they have planned for Americans goes beyond your capacity to understand that level of evil & hate.

I am SO , truly glad you asked this question . And i hope everyone reads this response . I already have left big oil behind , and so have a LOT of others . In the Seattle area Within the next 6 months , there will be a total of ONE THOUSAND e vehicle charging sites . One the eastern side of Washington state , is Spokane . It has the notable importance of being a test market . That means , if you can sell an idea THERE , is will sell ANYWHERE . They have 7 e vehicle charging sites , with more on the way . Also , they have a company BUILDING electric cars there . I am still frustrated at those who have not changed over . Mainstream media will not have this known , but it IS happening . However , sooner , would be better .

Again , i am glad you asked . I have been researching e vehicles for many years , you can view my posts here . U of Wa. did a study , they wondered , since we are one of the most northern states ( this was 7 years ago ) how much of our electricity we could get from the sun ALONE . After the research was done , 70% . NOW , if you drive across the state , you will see many wind farms , and solar farms . As i said before , we have more energy than we need at this time . If we a far north state can do it , the other states , excluding alaska , have NO EXCUSE . So , NO oil need be used in the manufacture of these vehicles . Of course you can charge you e vehicle at home . I have an e bike . You can pedal it , if you want to extend the range . It has an older Lithium ion battery , ONLY 1 third as efficient as the new ones . For one 12 cent charge , i can go 40 miles , before charging , or pedaling . I hear of a battery in the works that will be 10 times as efficient as mine . When mine wears out , in 7 to 10 years .... I might get one . As for your reservations . Why don't you do some research ? I think you are just afraid you might have to change . Yes it will be SO HARD ! I just wish i could have done it sooner . Do you enjoy being in the ethical position of giving money and power to terrorists Corporations that steal jobs and the glory of the Earth from your children ? Does YOUR chest swell with pride when you pump gas like a man ? You are a slave to them . They do not want you to have a choice . How many e vehicles are actually for sale where you live ? They do not want you having one and you are obedient . Good luck to you .

david h , It was you who started off on a high horse , asking how many of us would park our cars . And now your feelings are hurt i see . And NOW , you fabricate an image of me that comforts you . You could have looked at the hundreds of stories i posted here over the years to have an idea of me that might resemble reality . You have a lot of fear . It seems to me you comfort yourself by saying to yourself , that The NEW ideas are no better than the old ones , so i will stick with the old ones . The global corporate terrorism ,that does long term damage to the planet does not make that much a difference to you . I have never been to the gulf of Mexico , so perhaps , is should not matter to me . There is a little evil in everything , in this case one is VASTLY more evil . Until we get it all changed over , nothing will be pure . Is that a good enough excuse to not even try ? For me , it wasn't .

artemis6:
Because electricity doesn't Multiply and Steam does, from Water into Steam the volume is instantly mutiplied from one drop into 800. That's a forge hammer when unleashed all at one time.
Electricity is NOTHING beside Flashed Steam. An increase of 800 is instantaneous 80,000% EXPLOSION WITHOUT COMBUSTION & WITHOUT POLLUTION, and very powerful because it's what is called a "State Change". That's a Law of Physics concerning H2O. In other words we're talking CANNED DYNAMITE. You'll hear people cast doubts on my ideas because they want to sell you "controlled power" that comes out SLOW thru a METER to charge you. That's what electricity alone is. Locomotive steam engines was also controlled power too.
My conversion is not that.
I don't know how many times I have to type FLASH STEAM FLASH STEAM FLASH STEAM FLASH STEAM FLASH STEAM FLASH STEAM FLASH STEAM FLASH STEAM FLASH STEAM FLASH STEAM FLASH STEAM til someone understands, but I'm game. Tell ya what, think of it like this. When you blow up a balloon it takes many long breaths of air, but when you stick a needle into the balloon that's a FLASH RELEASE.
Another way to think of it is the difference between a battery and a capacitor. You can have a big battery and a big capacitor side by side and they're both the same size, so to your eyes they look like two harmless batteries. But if you lay your hand across the terminals of a battery nothing happens but if across the capacitor terminals it will discharge all at one time through your hand and quite literally cook the flesh from point A over to point B.
Well, that's what my engine will do. Cook. In a car it will lay rubber down the highway for miles. Think in terms also of driving one of those long dragsters and coming off the starting line smoke rolling off the tires. That's what my engine will do. That's why I don't get mad at anybody for not understanding. They simply can't conceive of that much raw energy in a normal car.
Of course Detroit wouldn't give that much horsepower to a passenger car nor should they ever, so what they would do is make a smaller engine, which loses more weight, which gives it even more "available" power. One reason everyone has so much difficulty conceiving of all that Power coming from Water is George W. Bush gave a podium speech years ago claiming "there is no magic wand energy", and at other times he kept repeating the phrase about stuff "being real hard", til he brainwashed the entire continent into thinking ENERGY IS HARD. A LIE.
That's why you all keep thinking in terms of nice, comfy, slow, controlled-release power like a Timed-Release prescription pill. I'm talking Greek to you => I'm talking CHERRY BOMB POWER FROM WATER, WHICH BUSH CALLED MAGIC. Well, it isn't magic but in a very real sense it is ENERGY ALCHEMY.
The Puppet Masters think you're all too stupid to understand it but I do not and never have. I've been writing about my wonderful engine systems since 2003. A few women online did understand but soon as someone saw a spark almost light the pile they'd swoop in paid by George Walker Bush to stomp out the fire I was trying to ignite.
What we today now call "trolls" but back then they were just paid assassins.

Getting people to be exclusively local is a fine idea , and i do agree with you on that , except for emergencies . Except that we will have to figure out how to get food to the large population densities , and injured hikers to a hospital . When a home or field gets struck by lightening and burns , i hope there will be a fire department to save the crops .... I have thought about this a bit , and what i have come to so far , is that there will NEED to be a TRANSITIONAL Society , BEFORE we get to the ideal . WE have no sane choice , but to get there , and there are two ends of the spectrum as to HOW . Keep in mind , this is a gross oversimplification , for the purpose of dialogue , I define them , thus . The easy way , giving people time to develop technology , and adapt as they will (in their respective environments ) , and the very hard (cold turkey) way where lots of people with very low coping skills commit acts of violence (war) out of fear . No leader is going to stand up for this role . We each must do what we can in our own corner of the map .

Politicians are of little importance , as they must get campaign funding FROM big oil to even be a contender . Other than that i agree with you . Everything , and i DO mean EVERYTHING you want to happen , will be stopped at every turn , as long as the Oil companies are getting money and other resources from every individual on this planet .

More arrests. Found this on CBS.
'Arrests are beginning anew outside the White House as police remove dozens of protesters who are hoping to convince President Barack Obama to block TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline.
Fifty protesters remain in jail after being arrested outside the White House on Saturday, the opening day of a two-week civil disobedience campaign.
They're expected to be released Monday night.
By noon today, police began arresting more demonstrators, including 68-year-old Patricia Warwick of Toronto.
A 65-year-old woman from Massachusetts who's celebrating her birthday was also arrested.
Protest organizers say a total of 46 will be arrested and will join their colleagues in jail by day's end.
Dozens were arrested outside the White House on Saturday after staging a sit-in to protest the proposed $7 billion pipeline that would boost U.S. dependence on Canadian oil sands.
Thousands of opponents of the pipeline plan to get arrested, in protests over the next two weeks that they hope will help persuade the Obama administration to kill the project.
The State Department is set to issue a final environmental impact report this month on the Keystone XL pipeline project that would bring oil sands petroleum from Alberta to Texas refineries. The department hopes to make a final decision on the TransCanada Corp line by the end of the year.

This pipeline going through will negate any good done on decreasing emissions.
__
James Hansen slams Keystone XL Canada-U.S. Pipeline: “Exploitation of tar sands would make it implausible to stabilize climate and avoid disastrous global climate impacts”The Canadian tar sands are substantially dirtier than conventional oil as the chart above shows (longer analysis here). They may contain enough carbon-intensive fuel to make stabilizing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide at non-catastrophic levels all but impossible.
And that is the point of Dr. James Hansen in a must-read essay on the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline to bring that dirty fuel into this country, “Silence Is Deadly: I’m Speaking Out Against Canada-U.S. Tar Sands Pipeline.”
Hansen, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, has been right longer about the climate than just about anyone else (see “Right for 27 years: 1981 Hansen study finds warming trend that could raise sea levels“). So he deserves to be heard.
Here is his essay, to which I’ve added some commentary with links:
The U.S. Department of State seems likely to approve a huge pipeline, known as Keystone XL to carry tar sands oil (about 830,000 barrels per day) to Texas refineries unless sufficient objections are raised. The scientific community needs to get involved in this fray now. If this project gains approval, it will become exceedingly difficult to control the tar sands monster. The environmental impacts of tar sands development include: irreversible effects on biodiversity and the natural environment, reduced water quality, destruction of fragile pristine Boreal Forest and associated wetlands, aquatic and watershed mismanagement, habitat fragmentation, habitat loss, disruption to life cycles of endemic wildlife particularly bird and Caribou migration, fish deformities and negative impacts on the human health in downstream communities. Although there are multiple objections to tar sands development and the pipeline, including destruction of the environment in Canada, and the likelihood of spills along the pipeline’s pathway, such objections, by themselves, are very unlikely to stop the project.
For more on the pipeline controversy, see “WikiLeaks reveals State Department discord over U.S. support for Canadian tar sands oil pipeline.”
An overwhelming objection is that exploitation of tar sands would make it implausible to stabilize climate and avoid disastrous global climate impacts. The tar sands are estimated (e.g., see IPCC Fourth Assessment Report) to contain at least 400 GtC (equivalent to about 200 ppm CO2). Easily available reserves of conventional oil and gas are enough to take atmospheric CO2 well above 400 ppm, which is unsafe for life on earth. However, if emissions from coal are phased out over the next few decades and if unconventional fossil fuels including tar sands are left in the ground, it is conceivable to stabilize earth’s climate.
Phase out of emissions from coal is itself an enormous challenge. However, if the tar sands are thrown into the mix, it is essentially game over. There is no practical way to capture the CO2 emitted while burning oil, which is used principally in vehicles.
Governments are acting as if they are oblivious to the fact that there is a limit on how much fossil fuel carbon we can put into the air. Fossil fuel carbon injected into the atmosphere will stay in surface reservoirs for millennia. We can extract a fraction of the excess CO2 via improved agricultural and forestry practices, but we cannot get back to a safe CO2 level if all coal is used without carbon capture or if unconventional fossil fuels, like tar sands are exploited.

Our youth are the key to this and they want to be part of a movement that makes a positive change. This is our time and it is theirs. I always look back to the woman's suffrage movement and it gives me inspiration. It can be done. Keep that as your mantra and always stay focused and work towards the goal and never give up. Thanks Jan, I got ya! I am back today, renewed and refreshed. I am praying for all of our brave and heroic concerned citizens who are standing strong in DC today. Those who will go to jail and those who are being held. Power to the People!!!

Can we keep this going another day in solidarity with those who are standing up against the OILigarchy? I hope so.
Thank you again to those who risk arrest to make the truth known.
Those who are on the side of greed and who do not care for what it is doing to this planet and its species in pursuit of that have much money on their side.
But we have truth and spirit, which is worth so much more in the end. - 9 months ago

How can We the People be arrested for our rights to speak to OUR employee about something that's not right and that is happening to OUR land?
It doesn't make sense! And if it doesn't make any sense, then it's NOT right!
End of story!

So true, our concerned citizens are not given a voice. I don't think this is much better than the Wisconsin Congressman charging his constituents a fee to see him. In my view, that is what is going on in DC, after all, these folks are paying a fine well over my day's pay, to stand in front of "our" White House and hold a sign for less than one hour (or that is my guess on the time frame). At any rate, it is leaving us with basically no voice. Just breaks my heart to see how bad things are today.

BUT...big but there....IF you were a Supreme Court ruled corporation, you would have the wherewithall to BUY your way into the Hallowed Halls of Congress ANY TIME you wish to speak to the Republican Leader, or any of his "henchmen" and TELL them what you want them to do for you and wwould NVER be asked to leave, shut up or ARRESTED for lodging YOUR complaints!
Do we live in a Two-Tiered society of the "Haves" who stand high and mighty on one "teir" while thre rest, the "Have nots" grovel on the "lower tier"?
You betcha!
To be honest, there are THREE teirs...the Haves...and the Have Mores...and then those that are fortunate to have ANYTHING at all!

What about all the homeless? Where do they store that refrigerator or plug it in?
What if you can't afford the electric bill to keep it running?
And many who ARE fortunate enough to have one AND have electricity, if you take a peek in that refigerator, what do you think they have in it? Caviar beside that bottle of an Alsace Pinot Noir?
Oh....what happened to the MSM's reporting on all those "tent cities"?
Huh...I guess they don't exist anymore.

Exactly, Bill. You're so right and you get the "kewpie doll of the day" award. And thanks for the other videos posted here and putting such effort into the cause.
It's not covered AT ALL in the Canadian media because of the $$$Xbillions are flowing into their already fat wallets - and environment (which includes the people) is being steamrolled - they say: the people "can just keep their mouths shut" - because it's bringing money into Alberta and therefore Canadian coffers.
But slowly, we're being heard and we're educating our children and many others - just over the past 3 years, I've noticed a huge increase in the numbers of people getting involved. My own daughter, and her daughter, are died-in-the-wool environmentalist (My daughter moved her family a year ago to an area where they have a huge garden, small greenhouse, and everyone barters and trades (she listened to my stories of the '60s and 70s) - I do believe that education is the ONLY way we'll ever turn these horrible outrages around. We must "teach our children well." - 9 months ago

"Tipping Point: The Age of the Oil Sands is a two-hour visual tour de force, taking viewers inside the David and Goliath struggle playing out within one of the most compelling environmental issues of our time.
In an oil-scarce world, we know there are sacrifices to be made in the pursuit of energy. What no one expected was that a tiny Native community downriver from Canada’s oil sands would reach out to the world, and be heard.
Directed by Edmonton filmmakers Tom Radford and Niobe Thompson of Clearwater Media, and hosted by Dr. David Suzuki, this special presentation of The Nature of Things goes behind the headlines to reveal how a groundbreaking new research project triggered a tipping point for the Alberta oil sands."

Thank you so much for posting this doc. David Suzuki's been educating millions for 30 years - there isn't an environmental issue too hot for him to sound-off on, and he explains things so simply. The Alberta tar sands is an atrocity, the epitome of the David and Goliath battle.
This documentary should be a must-see in all classrooms, boardrooms and living rooms. - 9 months ago

http://www.cbc.ca/strombo/show-politics/canadian-government-accused-of-excessive...
"August 4, 2011
Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) has released a report claiming representatives of Canada's government are "engaging in an unprecedented lobby effort to open up the European market to oil from its devastating tar sands."
According to FoEE's investigation, 110 meetings have taken place between Canadian and British government "representatives" and oil executives in the past two years. Apparently, Canadian officials have tried to downplay how much of a carbon footprint the tar sands create. Friends of the Earth says Ottawa is concerned that new fuel legislation in Europe could hurt exports from the tar sands, so it's deliberately marketing the sands as environmentally friendly.
Although Europe doesn't consume a lot of oil from the tar sands, FoEE says Canada is concerned that changes in Europe's approach may cause the U.S. to take a tougher line on tar sands oil. The Canadian government refused to comment on the report."

NO, I think these should be the jobs of last resort. Possibly destroy our land and environment, in the quest for jobs is a step in the wrong direction. We need to pursue environmentally friendly jobs.
Climate change is real. Why choose a path of possible destruction, when we have the choice of environmentally friendly energy? Sadly, all one has to do is follow the money. Money talks in America. Sad, sad, sad.

Jobs is a "talking point" the truth behind the curtain much more insidious. (almost always is). Sure we need jobs, and like you say, clean jobs, ones that improve our country is the direction we need to go. Their jobs? they will end up creating more superfund sites. Now there are great job futures. :(
