DC, NY area evacuates after 5.9 quake hits Virginia

_Thousands of people evacuated buildings across Washington, D.C., and New York City on Tuesday after a moderate earthquake in Virginia that was also felt as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C. No tsunami warning was issued for the East Coast.

..Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were among the areas evacuated.

At the Pentagon in northern Virginia, a low rumbling built and built to the point that the building was shaking. People ran into the corridors of the government's biggest building and as the shaking continued there were shouts of "Evacuate! Evacuate!"

Centered some 90 miles from the nation's capital, the quake was a magnitude 5.9, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

At the U.S. Capitol, light fixtures swung and the building shook for about 15 seconds while the tremor hit, NBC News reported.

At Reagan National Airport outside Washington, ceiling tiles fell during a few seconds of shaking. All flights were put on hold.

In New York City, NBC reported debris fell from the attorney general's office, causing a brief panic as people ran from the area.

Airport towers and government buildings in New York, including City Hall, were evacuated. The 26-story federal courthouse in lower Manhattan began swaying and hundreds of people were seen leaving the building.

A mild tremor was even felt by NBC reporters with President Barack Obama during his vacation on Martha's Vineyard, an island off Massachusetts.

In Charleston, W.Va., hundreds of workers left the state Capitol building and employees at other downtown office buildings were asked to leave temporarily."The whole building shook," said Jennifer Bundy, a spokeswoman for the state Supreme Court. "You could feel two different shakes. Everybody just kind of came out on their own."In Ohio, where office buildings swayed in Columbus and Cincinnati and the press box at the Cleveland Indians' Progressive Field shook. At least one building near the Statehouse was evacuated in downtown Columbus. In downtown Baltimore, Md., the quake sent office workers into the streets, where lamp posts swayed slightly as they called family and friends to check in.More about the quake at breakingnews.com

The earthquake’s epicenter was near Louisa, Va., the USGS reported. It was a very shallow quake, which would explain why it was so widely felt.

The D.C. area's previous record for an earthquake was on July 16, 2010, when a 3.6 magnitude quake was felt.

The East Coast gets earthquakes, but usually smaller ones than the West Coast and is less prepared for shaking.

This report will be updated as information becomes available.

    • Evacuations? Over an earthquake this small? Oh man.

That's like running from a chihuahua or putting on a fire suit to take something out of the oven.

    • JanforGore:

The tectonic plate was yanked really hard sideways. The tops of the church buildings and also the top of the Washington Monument had too much inertia and didn't move with the ground.

A lot of people tomorrow morning will be told to enter tall office buildings. I'M NOT ONE OF EM.

    • I’m sure the corporate media is going to milk this for all it is worth. This is a commercial bonanza for them. The ad-libbing will go on for hours. I was listening to an “eyewitness” on CBS radio on the way home before, (who worked for the station), go into detail about the expression on her dog’s face after the earthquake was over. (Not that this isn’t a human interest story, but because the quake was considered mild they are searching for leads, sometimes too hard.) I’m sure they’ll stay up all night until they find a crack in a foundation or something, and they’ll get right on top of it. http://sibob.org/wordpress/

      - A geophysicist for the United States Geological Survey at Caltech said Tuesday afternoon that Southern California's fault lines should not see any effects from a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the East Coast a few hours ago.
According to Ken Hudnut, the Central Virginia Seismic Zone is not connected to any known fault lines.

The earthquake, centered northwest of Richmond, Va., rattled the nation's capital and was felt as far north as Rhode Island, New York City and Martha's Vineyard, Mass., where President Barack Obama is vacationing.

The USGS said the earthquake was half a mile deep. Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C. Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were evacuated. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Charlie Ericksen was reading through a sleuth of emails Tuesday afternoon in his Washington, D.C., office we he thought the boiler room exploded. "Jim (an employee) told me it felt like an earthquake," the Southern California native said. "I said, 'What are you talking about, this isn't California.'"

Ericksen, who has lived in the nation's capital for more than 34 years, said he has never felt an earthquake there before.

"It was first one I've ever felt, where as back in California I used to feel one almost every day," the former East L.A. resident added. "It made me feel home sick."

The East Coast gets earthquakes, but usually smaller ones and is less prepared for them, according to Hudnut. "Their building codes aren't as strict and they have a lot more older buildings," he said.

Virginia and the eastern side of the North American continent are in the middle of a tectonic plate. The North American Plate is one of the 15 or so major "chunks" of crust that float on top of the hot mantle. The plate includes both continental crust and heavier (iron- and magnesium-rich) oceanic crust.

The eastern coast of the United States marks the boundary between continental and oceanic crust, but the North American Plate includes both continental and oceanic crust. The Eastern Shore/Virginia Beach are at the edge of the continent, but are not located at the edge of the continental plate. Instead, the eastern edge of the North American Plate is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. At that ridge, magma rises slowly and pushes Virginia (and the rest of the North American Plate) towards China, at the rate of about 2-3 centimeters/year.

      North American Plate
Source: USGS World Plate Boundaries Animation

In contrast, the far western edge of the North American Plate is near the edge of the North American continent. In Southern California, the western edge of the North American Plate rubs against the eastern edge of Pacific Plate. That boundary is marked by the San Andreas Fault and many other named faults. The North American and Pacific plates are moving in different directions. Earthquakes occur when the pressure to move exceeds the capacity of the rocks to resist motion. Intermittently, the plates "break free" of each other and the edges spring into a new alignment. When the land moves into the new alignment, everything shakes nearby - and buildings, highway bridges, etc. may collapse.

Virginia is not on an edge of a continental plate where sudden, jerking movement occurs regularly; Virginia is in the relatively-stable middle of a plate. That's why Virginia does not experience the large-magnitude earthquakes that affect Los Angeles, Alaska, Haiti, Japan, Chile, or other places that are on a tectonic plate's edge.
      __
I don't know, this one by contrast was big. I just got a call from my Mayor stating they are monitoring the situation here as tremors were felt as well.

    • JanforGore:

Thank you Jan for this excellent and very informative post! I've been reading many comments & quotes today following the apartment building shaking and from what I gather this quake was shaking the equivalent to a harder quake in California... something to do with the crust being harder here.

We took a bigger "effective hit" than a regular old hit. It lasted right long I thought, well actually it lasted very short, stopped a tad then resumed. I'm lumping the two together and calling them long. I did not time it so maybe it was only 30 seconds but it caused me significant dizziness that is only now fully leaving, 6 hours of dizziness.

There might be some aftershocks later. I did kind of feel a small sway a few hours after it happened so I suppose that was probably one.

Nothing here in Roanoke fell off my shelves or dressers but over town I heard the Veteran's Administration Office and some offices downtown Roanoke they did have stuff knocked off their desks.

Colorado had a 5.5 4 hours earlier (largest quake in 100 years), and their quake versus this quake both happened at nearly the same time on the minute hand, just before the hour. I thought that was rather significant myself.

Since Roanoke & Virginia/Eastern seaboard are all sitting atop SUCH A LARGE CHUNK OF TECTONIC PLATE it lends some creedence to this idea of Comet Elenin lining up with the sun, since if that was to happen the combined gravitational pull would yank this large plate right hard.

So it's entirely possible today's event will be coming again during the next few months as Elenin continues its journey through the Milky Way.

I think because here it is one plate and the waves can then reverberate farther out as opposed to the West Coast where the plates actually come up against each other. And I can believe you about the dizziness. I actually felt a little bit of a vertigo like feeling for a bit, but that's gone now, and I'm near NYC. Good you're OK.

It just depends on if too many ducks line up between Earth and the Sun. Then if the Moon comes around and adds to it. Personally Jan I'm the last person on earth to know for certain I'm not a skywatcher or anything. It just sets my red flags jumping that Colorado and Virginia (entire area) were all facing the Sun when this thing started today.

I now possess a Coincidence Meter!

All I'm saying is seems like tomorrow we need to be better prepared than we were today we could have a replay. And if we have one tomorrow the Odds increase dramatically for the 3rd day.

On the other hand if we were to be on the opposite side away from the Sun and those other things happened we would be pulled DOWN and the people on the other side would take the hit. I'm going to be surprised if we don't see California do something....

After a 5.9 magnitude earthquake rattles much of the East Coast, Twitter once again proves itself to be the go-to source for breaking news.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake rocked much of the East Coast today, according to the US Geological Survey. The epicenter of the quake was located in near Mineral, Virginia, which is in the middle of the state. Tremors of the quake were felt more than 300 miles away, in New York City and towns in northern New York state and elsewhere.

(Your reporter lives about two hours north of New York City, and I felt it here.)

Due to its relatively close proximity to Washington D.C., both the Pentagon and the Capitol Building, where pictures reportedly fell off the walls, were evacuated. Some firms on Wall Street also halted trading and evacuated due to the quake. So far, no major injuries or fatalities have been reported.

As of this writing, Verizon cell phone voice service was down for the greater New York area, though text messages were going through fine.

    • I just felt it here a few minutes ago. Chair and computer shook. Strange feeling. People were coming outside. At first it felt like a huge gust of wind blew me forward a bit as I was sitting. Strange happenings.
