Solar Stunner: America is a $1.9 Billion Exporter of Solar Products

With all the stories about China dominating the solar photovoltaics (PV) manufacturing sector, you might not think that America is a net exporter of solar products. But it is — to the tune of $1.8 billion. That’s a $1 billion increase over net exports documented in the solar sector last year.
In fact, a report released this morning from GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association found that the U.S. has a $247 million trade surplus with China.
“U.S. imports in 2010 were estimated at $1.4 billion, while exports were estimated to be between $1.7 billion – $2.0 billion based on the availability of data for capital equipment sales. This made the U.S. a net exporter of solar goods to China by $247 million to $539 million. Imports came predominantly from modules ($1.2 billion), while exports were driven by capital equipment ($708 million to $1 billion) and polysilicon ($873 million).”
Solar isn’t just about the module. When looking at polysilicon production, equipment for manufacturing lines, power electronics, solar hot water tanks, and any number of other domestically-produced products, the U.S. actually offers a good-sized contribution to the global market.
The 2011 Solar Energy Trade Assessment is a follow up from last year’s report, which found U.S. net exports in 2009 were worth $723 million.
The $1 billion surge in net exports came during a year when the U.S. solar market grew by over 100%. Due to the successful Treasury Grant Program and Loan Guarantee Program that made it easier for developers and manufacturers to finance facilities, the solar sector grew faster than ever before.
And all that solar — particularly solar PV — brings immense value to the domestic economy.
According to the trade assessment report, around 73% of the value of an installed solar system (equipment, labor, site management) is created domestically. When looking at the total solar-sector contribution to the economy, solar PV represents about 82% of the domestic value, with concentrating solar power and solar heating and cooling representing about 9% a piece.
And these calculations don’t even consider the potential value to the electricity system. A report released in June by three solar researchers found that solar PV offers 15-40 cents per kilowatt-hour in added “value” due to its ability to match peak demand, reduce the need to build expensive transmission lines and provide local environmental benefits.
But whether or not policymakers will recognize these tangible benefits is very uncertain. With basic support mechanisms like the Treasury Grant and Loan Guarantee programs set to expire, and the House set to slash funding for various energy programs, America’s solar trade surplus could close quickly.
The findings of today’s GTM Research/SEIA report may surprise a lot of people, especially those who have focused on the Evergreen Solar bankruptcy story or the uncertain fate of thin-film manufacturer Solyndra as reasons not to invest in solar. In reality, solar is a very diverse sector — the $5.6 billion in equipment exports from the U.S. is an important reminder of that diversity and economic potential.

$1,900,000,000.00 play money for children to build more planes eh? And that's supposed to "help all of us" eh? Chump change for chump Americans, send more of the chump's children to die like proud chumps.
I fail to see exports getting the Rent Vouchers I was told I would get OVER ONE YEAR AGO, while Commonwealth of Virginia brags about a $1 billion surplus 3 weeks ago. Evil is as Evil does. Evil shows itself now.

You exercised great restraint, surely a great Virtue.
As for the rent vouchers I've given up on them a LONG TIME AGO. I'm a single old guy ready for the internment people ya know. There's others even if they are behind me, they have children. But I point it out because it's so STUPID, because if I had a break on the rent I could pay to have my car painted and maybe new tires or something, so any money they "give me" goes straight into some younger man's paycheck.
I thought that was the objective. Perhaps I need to go back to Capitalist School. But since the Commonwealth of Virginia is obviously an outpost of the Soviet Union and everybody sets their fees to their Group Plan, so that all fees stay elevated after a 30 year RECESSION, apparently they have no idea how to operate by the Capitalist playbook.
And since the soul-negative doctors have decided to withhold every medical care that would get me back to work I sit in shame drawing a disability check that HAD I HAD PROPER MEDICAL ATTENTION no one would be paying my way for me.
That's how Virginia works. They want a certain number of people to be stuck on disability at any given time. It helps THEM feel good how nice they are to the rejects who don't deserve nuthin'. At least that's all I've been able to figure out after 22+ years. If someone shoots me some proof I'm wrong I'll be glad to stand down.

What do those with a lack of vision have against poor people in this world gaining access to solar energy? Could it be because it makes them self sufficient, independent and brings them education and opportunity as well as health while lifting them out of poverty? Some of us know what this is all about. Keeping people down. Limiting vision. Controlling them. Well, you can't control everyone.

If one of those solar towers was sitting near your place and a storm went thru AS JUST HAPPENED taking down powerlines you'd still be without electricity.
That's why REMOTE SOURCE POWER IS WRONG. Powerlines are the weak link in the chain that needs to be done away with, PERIOD. Home-generated power is the only answer, whether it's one of mine or someone else's invention that's used to have it..
Jan your deal with Mr. Gore is the least bit my business UNLESS it becomes obvious you're changing courses and he has changed courses also. If the two of ya are just T. Boone Pickens wannabees supporting remote power then YOU'RE BOTH A FAIL.
Same thing as that Canada-Louisiana oil pipeline same difference, oil flowing through a breakable pipe or electric power flowing through breakable powerlines over breakable telephone poles now being repaired by breakable repairmen after electrocuting a child and an adult who were alse breakable and are now dead.
Remote power is Yesterday's Answer.

Peak oil and evolution will make the eventual death of fossil fuel inevitable. Those who talk of some small companies folding in a message board post not because of lack of demand but because of government indifference and political lobbying by the fossil fuel industry are not telling the reality of the global picture. They are the ones who will also be responsible for the global catastrophe that awaits when Peak OIl becomes a true reality, because they stood in the way of innovation and necessary transition because they were too greedy and hateful to understand what is at stake by not moving forward. Transitioning to renewabke energy is a necessity to sustain the human species in the future. With our fossil fuel intensive agricultural system added to the projected population increases even they know they are heading for the end in this century, which is why these addicts now dig in the sands of Alberta to find the last drops not caring if it kills you as long as their stock portfolios stay strong. I say ^*** them all, they will not stop the evolutionary process. Moore's Law dictates that as a civilization expands and knowledge increases so will demand for technology that suits this evolution. Fossil fuels do not fit this paradigm. And for every one of YOUR links, I can post two positive ones. Take heart people, there are those interests and entities out to stifle the progress we need to survive. But we will keep fighting for it.

all because the subsidies were cut in Europe and in large markets of America. Here is a suggestion; the coal and natural gas industries see solar as a market rival. They have lobbied hard here and abroad to kill subsidies as it also cuts into theirs subsidies. So...electric companies who were giving subsidies cut them because of the strong arm of coal and natural gas. Many of the large electric want this market for themselves. Follow the money. Solar companies who try to start up are fought tooth and nail. BTW Evergreen moved to China.....ain't the free market a grand thing.

The "strong arm" is a nice phrase NOW PUT SOME MEAT ON THAT ARM. The Oil, Coal & Natural Gas industries pay to share television ads so perhaps they pay Europe to drop subsidies eh? Or increase subsidies, WHATEVER IT TAKES TO SQUASH SOLAR+GREENING OF AMERICA. Or can't you recognize your enemies by now? You should. Their pants'r stuffed with American dolares to fight against Americans!
Jesus. You people kill me. You're easier to roll over than a Tianenman Square tank. Subsidies aren't needed if the technology is right.
Do you have to subsidy donuts? No. If the product is right people buy it, if it isn't right they don't buy it, no matter what country it's from. 15 years after fighting Germans to the DEATH Americans were buying VW bugs like they had never before seen an automobile... because THEY LIKED IT.
You just can't man up and admit solar cells are garbage. They use precious metals we need IN OUR COMPUTERS. All they produce is trickle current, they last about 8+ years then die the death, and that isn't enough to challenge anybody, not Big Oil, not Big Coal, and certainly not take down Big Gas.
You need solar that works, and works, and works for 200 years, not 200 damn days, or weeks, whatever. Otherwise quit and walk off the field.

EXACTLY! And every time a Big Corporation muscles in & takes over the market the market may as well be considered to not exist. Corporate solutions make better solutions DISAPPEAR.
Corporations make markets disappear, which also makes Competition disappear. It's a big disappearing act, what I was trying to say to Jan too, once ya accept the wrong answers YOU MAY AS WELL TAKE A BAYONET TO THE RIBS BECAUSE IT'S ALL OVER.
Crude Oil more than likely, moving their Chess piece from old to new, same game, same loser US citizens. America is roasting under corporations, turned over a spit and spit on.
Thanks again Merrill. Same as Detroit. We're stuck every way to Sunday. The peon citizens get peed on and nothin's gonna change it.
Which is why most young people in America have thrown in the towel and decided to enjoy life inside a barrel of stinking garbage as best they can and play video games. They aren't stupid they're smart and they see THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS. AMERICA IS FINISHED.
Young people have no say in wars, no say in solar, no say in corporate decisions that determine how crappy their entire lives will be, they see it all. Blacks are the smartest of all and learn to "play the system" they realize they cannot change, get the Food Stamps, get the Child Care, get the anything they can, because that is actually THE SANE DECISION WHEN YA LIVE UNDER COMMUNIST RULES.

THE HYDRA HAS GROWN ANOTHER HEAD. Once you develop "an industry" it resists any other advances of better "up & coming" solar power systems. A counter-innovation energy works to protect itself forever. They own the turf, buy the politicians with tax monies/lobbyists, all new guys are toast.
Same thing that happened with crude oil. The first horse to win has to always win. So now we have two "crude oil industries". Same mindset, same everything, Progress stops, all newcomers get squashed because the Gov has become dependent on the block of taxes coming in from the "winner".
In other words => the Winner one time becomes the Winner from now on. I'm very impressed to see we're in the same rut made by the same mold.
Those new cold fusion devices will also get squashed out that Americans will never have. This is nothing to celebrate over. We just entered Rip Van Winkle mode. More concrete around America's feet & legs, more gangrene traveling up into the torso.

That being said spending $1,000,000,000.00 on a solar tower that keeps people tethered to a monthly bill is hardly an answer. Their lives have not progressed because storm systems are more violent, which destroys the powerlines delivery system EASILY AND QUICKLY.
It's an answer that would satisfy NEANDERTHAL MAN. If we are progressing then I want to see no more powerlines. Obviously we're not progressing when the most vocal around here, JanForGore, falls for their corporate pinata.
