Dr. Ivar Giaever, a former professor with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the 1973 winner of the Nobel Prize in physics, abruptly announced his resignation Tuesday, Sept. 13, from the premier physics society in disgust over its officially stated policy that "global warming is occurring."
The official position of the American Physical Society (APS) supports the theory that man's actions have inexorably led to the warming of the planet, through increased emissions of carbon dioxide.
Giaever does not agree -- and put it bluntly and succinctly in the subject line of his email, reprinted at Climate Depot, a website devoted to debunking the theory of man-made climate change.
"I resign from APS," Giaever wrote.
Giaever was cooled to the statement on warming theory by a line claiming that "the evidence is incontrovertible."
"In the APS it is ok to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming is incontrovertible?" he wrote in an email to Kate Kirby, executive officer of the physics society.
"The claim … is that the temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8 degree Kelvin in about 150 years, which (if true) means to me is that the temperature has been amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness have definitely improved in this 'warming' period," his email message said.
A spokesman for the APS confirmed to FoxNews.com that the Nobel Laureate had declined to pay his annual dues in the society and had resigned. He also noted that the society had no plans to revise its statement.
The use of the word "incontrovertible" had already caused debate within the group, so much so that an addendum was added to the statement discussing its use in April, 2010.
"The word 'incontrovertible' ... is rarely used in science because by its very nature, science questions prevailing ideas. The observational data indicate a global surface warming of 0.74 °C (+/- 0.18 °C) since the late 19th century."
Giaever earned his Nobel for his experimental discoveries regarding tunneling phenomena in superconductors. He has since become a vocal dissenter from the alleged “consensus” regarding man-made climate fears, Climate Depot reported, noting that he was one of more than 100 co-signers of a 2009 letter to President Obama critical of his position on climate change.
Public perception of climate change has steadily fallen since late 2009. A Rasmussen Reports public opinion poll from August noted that 57 percent of adults believe there is significant disagreement within the scientific community on global warming, up five points from late 2009.
The same study showed that 69 percent of those polled believe it’s at least somewhat likely that some scientists have falsified research data in order to support their own theories and beliefs. Just 6 percent felt confident enough to report that such falsification was "not at all likely."
...
I wonder who knows more about science. This guy or top Occidental Petroleum board member ManBearPig, who's afraid to debate anyone.

1. That is a very elementary rhetorical fallacy called ad hominen. It something someone does when they can't debate the point or lack the intellect to present a proper argument.
2. I don't have a TV; I don't follow mass media. I'm out of the left/right paradigm. I don't support the Republican or Democrat party, nor the stupid TV programs that push their propaganda.
3. Did he resign or didn't he? The fact is he did. CO2 does not cause Global Warming. ManBearPig is a con artist, fraud selling a carbon tax for big corporations and your a brainwashed troll. I used to believe this garbage too...until I did the research. You should too. I made it very simple: www.current.com/groups/climate-gate - 9 months ago

Actually, it seems to be a valid point. FOX News is tabloid journalism that only is labeled as legitimate because it used to be a legitimate new station before Rupert Murdock sunk his talons into it.
"2. I don't have a TV; I don't follow mass media. I'm out of the left/right paradigm. I don't support the Republican or Democrat party, nor the stupid TV programs that push their propaganda. "
And yet you are using a story from a major television "news" corporation that pushes political propaganda. Curious no?

Cute reference to South Park. What is really nice though is that you give a general link, but you don't actually provide direct evidence. Still, I thought I'd look into one of the more common sources used in the threads from the climate-gate group link, www.infowars.com. It is sadly laughable that you are using a website which is primarily run by Alex Jones as a source. This is a guy who in 2000 infiltrated the Bohemian Grove, filmed the opening ceremony and claimed that it was a mock child sacrifice.

Solid reply from a nobody without a face. I've posted hundreds of articles from plenty of resources and thousands of scientists have refuted that CO2 is not the main driver of climate change, which is something you still haven't addressed.
I don't have to defend Alex Jones or Fox News. You think MSNBC is any better...owned by GE and Bill Gates? And Al Gore deserves to be clowned after calling so-called "deniers" racists as part of a propaganda campaign to fear monger the population into a carbon scam run by big banks.
Tell me, when has climate not changed and is the role of the Sun a greater or less factor than CO2 in affecting that change? How about the Gore family ties to Occidental Petroleum? These paragraphs were taken from a PBS Frontline Article:
Occidental on Capitol Hill
Between 1996 and 2000, Occidental spent more than $8.6 million lobbying the U.S. government, including for U.S. military aid to Colombia. In the 2000 election cycle, the company gave hard and soft money totaling about $551,000, with about 60 percent going to Republican candidates and political action committees. The CEO of Occidental's chemical subsidiary, J. Roger Hirl, raised more than $100,000 in support of George W. Bush's bid for the presidency.
Occidental also has maintained links to the Democratic Party for many years, primarily through former Vice President Al Gore's father, the late Al Gore Sr., who after leaving the Senate took a $500,000-a-year job with an Occidental subsidiary, then served on the company board for 28 years.
When the younger Gore joined Clinton's ticket in 1992, Occidental loaned the Presidential Inauguration Committee $100,000 to help pay for the ceremony. And after Gore took office, the company gave nearly $500,000 in soft money to Democratic committees and causes. In late 1997, the former vice president championed a $3.65 billion sale to Occidental of the government's stake in Elk Hills Oil Field (California), representing the largest privatization of federal property in U.S. history. In 1998, when his father died, Gore inherited about $500,000 worth of Occidental stock.

Yes, I actually do. MSNBC is by no means a shining example of what a news organization should be, but they tend to have higher standards then FOX News and Alex Jones. Unfortunately MSNBC has gone downhill attempting to compete with FOX (a huge mistake in my opinion) but they still make an effort to let their audience know the difference between their opinions shows and their actual news shows.
"When the younger Gore joined Clinton's ticket in 1992, Occidental loaned the Presidential Inauguration Committee $100,000 to help pay for the ceremony."
This is not uncommon for any company nor any political figure of that level.
"And after Gore took office, the company gave nearly $500,000 in soft money to Democratic committees and causes."
Nor is this, though I am mildly disgusted by it.
"In late 1997, the former vice president championed a $3.65 billion sale to Occidental of the government's stake in Elk Hills Oil Field (California), representing the largest privatization of federal property in U.S. history."
This is where the facts a little blurry. Al Gore championed the sale of the oil field, period. He did not champion the sale of the oil field to go specifically to Occidental. Occidental happened to be the highest bidder for the Elk Hills Oil Field. Selling the oil field makes sense since the oil field was originally established as a naval reserve in 1912 when everything, including huge naval ships were powered by fossil fuels. In more recent history, large naval vessels have become powered by nuclear reactors instead of fossil fuels.
I'd also be a little more concerned if Gore inherited the Occidental stocks before the sale of the land to Occidental. However, since his inheriting the stocks was dependent upon his fathers death, it does not seem likely that it would make for a sensible economic plan to boost Occidental stocks that he might not have received in a timely manner.
Also, about something that just seemed a bit... I don't know, personal.
"Solid reply from a nobody without a face."
I've put my face up as my avatar before, I changed it not because I did not want people to see my face, but because I thought it was time for a change. Just so you can link a face with the banter, I'll post a picture of my face so you won't have to strain your imagination.
