Himalayas could become the Saudi Arabia of solar energy

Think of solar arrays and you'll probably picture panels under blistering desert heat – but we may be able to get more energy from solar panels on snow-capped mountains.

Kotaro Kawajiri at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology mapped solar irradiance across the globe in collaboration with colleagues in Japan. They found that some of the highest levels of sunlight can be found in the Himalayas and the Andes: at altitude, less light is lost to the atmosphere.

There's another reason why high-altitude solar power makes sense. At temperatures of around 40 °C, 13 per cent of the energy solar panels would normally produce is lost to heat. The cold air at high-altitude keeps the panels cool and efficient, says Kawajiri.

Keith Barnham, a photovoltaics researcher at Imperial College London, says cold climates may be the new frontier in solar. "There are a lot of underdeveloped regions and communities living high up in the foothills of the Himalayas that could benefit from solar energy," he says.

    • Of course! Computer efficiency suffers from Heat also. This makes good sense. Just grab some guides and lots of llamas, done deal. Provided you put them where they never have an AVALANCHE.

      And high enough off the ground so the snow doesn't cover em up.

      They could probably set up a short range microwave transmission instead of using cable to bring the power down. Or use a water pipe.

    • Solar arrays to counteract the effects of melting, and solar cookers to counteract the effects of black carbon. We have answers and solutions. But again, we always see stories like this and that is where it ends. This is why I will never trust ANY oil company stating they are diversifying into solar or "going green" while still drilling for oil. We need to get beyond the research.

      I have some ideas for special shapes in the solar cookers... whenever somebody pushes the car and pops the clutch. I think the solar cooker power can be DOUBLED.

      Minimum. I'm ready to break through the gate. It's been kept closed in my face too long. Jail cell doors need to be set fire to. The dragster is fueled and rocking for the light. We can run over Limbaugh on th' way to the golden chalice.

      Two birds, one stone => just the way I like it.

      Did you catch my point about using a "water pipe" Jan? A non-grounded water hose (or PVC pipe, or non-conducting metal pipe) CAN CARRY THE SOLAR DOWN OFF THE MOUNTAIN IN THE STREAM OF WATER.

      Water is a Fluid Cable Jan. I thought you'd jump 10 feet when I posted that. You can be sending melted snow water down off the mountain ~PLUS THE ELECTRICITY~ in the same stream.

      Ya get double your money's worth too.

      Really Jan, you need to watch Jason Robard's great film from 1970 called The Ballad of Cable Hogue some time. You will get lots of great laughs. Watch it with the kid. Cover his eyes when the blond bombshell actress Stella Stevens jumps naked out of the outdoor tub and runs inside.

      The movie is about how he found water in the desert out west. You will really like it. Promise!
