The new figures for 2010 mean that levels of greenhouse gases are higher than the worst case scenario outlined by climate experts just four years ago.
"The more we talk about the need to control emissions, the more they are growing," said John Reilly, co-director of MIT's Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change.
The world pumped about 564 million more tons (512 million metric tons) of carbon into the air in 2010 than it did in 2009. That's an increase of 6 percent. That amount of extra pollution eclipses the individual emissions of all but three countries — China, the United States and India, the world's top producers of greenhouse gases.
It is a "monster" increase that is unheard of, said Gregg Marland, a professor of geology at Appalachian State University, who has helped calculate Department of Energy figures in the past.
Extra pollution in China and the U.S. account for more than half the increase in emissions last year, Marland said.
"It's a big jump," said Tom Boden, director of the Energy Department's Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center at Oak Ridge National Lab. "From an emissions standpoint, the global financial crisis seems to be over."
Boden said that in 2010 people were traveling, and manufacturing was back up worldwide, spurring the use of fossil fuels, the chief contributor of man-made climate change.
India and China are huge users of coal. Burning coal is the biggest carbon source worldwide and emissions from that jumped nearly 8 percent in 2010.
"The good news is that these economies are growing rapidly so everyone ought to be for that, right?" Reilly said Thursday. "Broader economic improvements in poor countries has been bringing living improvements to people. Doing it with increasing reliance on coal is imperiling the world."
In 2007, when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued its last large report on global warming, it used different scenarios for carbon dioxide pollution and said the rate of warming would be based on the rate of pollution. Boden said the latest figures put global emissions higher than the worst case projections from the climate panel. Those forecast global temperatures rising between 4 and 11 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century with the best estimate at 7.5 degrees.
Even though global warming skeptics have attacked the climate change panel as being too alarmist, scientists have generally found their predictions too conservative, Reilly said. He said his university worked on emissions scenarios, their likelihood, and what would happen. The IPCC's worst case scenario was only about in the middle of what MIT calculated are likely scenarios.
Chris Field of Stanford University, head of one of the IPCC's working groups, said the panel's emissions scenarios are intended to be more accurate in the long term and are less so in earlier years. He said the question now among scientists is whether the future is the panel's worst case scenario "or something more extreme."
"Really dismaying," Granger Morgan, head of the engineering and public policy department at Carnegie Mellon University, said of the new figures. "We are building up a horrible legacy for our children and grandchildren."

The heat jump in 2005 was the "real jump" that was ahead of time. That was what caused the 2nd jump in 2010 to be so much larger than normal.
2010 was an extra jump that should not have happened. In other words, we had two jumps instead of one.
This bodes extremely poorly for the years ahead.
American manufacturing has slowed, and people out of work ~not driving to & from work~ has also helped, EXCEPT THAT the manufacturing only went around the world and still adds to the sum total, EXCEPT THAT it has to be shipped back here as a finished product, downloaded off a ship, trucked back into the nation's heartland, all of which BUMPS UP THE SUM TOTAL OVERALL.
No gains have been made. We only discovered the idiots running this international fiasco are money-driven idiots. But we already knew that.

There is no doubt amongst anyone with even a modicum of an education or even common sense that climate change not only exists but that it is directly caused by human influences and that it is also a crisis that is picking up speed at exponential rates. This is the case despite the willfully ignorant bleatings of the "flat-earthers" as well the cadre of cynical shills who have no compunction in lying to them.
The vast majority of the world's scientific community - with the obvious exception of the crackpot 'pseudo-scientists' under the employ of the fossil fuel cartels - has confirmed this ad nauseam.
A year ago during the midterm elections, several states including California was able to see through the smoke and sent a clear message to the destructive influences of the energy industries whose sneering attempts to reverse the course of progress via referendum was summarily trounced. It's at least a start.
The real problem that must be overcome lies with those who have done nothing but obfuscate the debate constantly touting spurious approaches such as, "drill-baby-drill", “we’ll never be able to eliminate oil from our paradigm”, “Nuclear Energy is safe” (tell that to the residents of Chernobyl & Japan) or even the breathtakingly disingenuous ‘righteous indignation’ that there are those who "may lose their jobs” (as if they ever really cared a fig about the proletariat).
These deceptions have been plied for many decades deliberately quashing any and all attempts to wean the United States - or the world for that matter - off of the teat of fossil fuels. They are literally marinated in oil, irradiated in nuclear waste and choking on coal dust and anything that any enlightened people might propose to purge ourselves from this addiction ignore as a matter of rote.
We all must fight these forces with everything that we have at our disposal for if they continue to prevail, there will no longer a planet worth inhabiting.

What really needs to happen now is we finish what we started and pull out every liter of natural gas & crude oil that's holding the ground up.
That way we can sink closer to the Earth's core. Once we do that we will have plenty of Heat & Energy!

Geothermal causes Earthquakes, possibly because it's pulling out heat in irregular places. No, we need to all sink at the same Rate of Speed, then you'd be right.
We'd all be right then. Right! and, Hot.

I remember watching that on Family Classics with Frazier Thomas back in the day....loved it!!!! I totally grew up on WGN when the folks first got cable.
But I digress....I have often wondered whether it would be possible to do such a thing without creating a new moon.

Sure, plus I can update it. A gigantic asteroid is due to nearly skip off our planet on November 8 next Tuesday. It is the size of AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER so if it was to hit Earth we wouldn't have any further need for that movie.
One lick that size we would quit ticking after all the quakes finished.

GAO: 42% of USHCN Weather Stations Fail to Meet NOAA Standards Sep 30 2011 EPW report.
“Many of the USHCN stations have incomplete temperature records; very few have complete records. 24 of the 1,218 stations (about 2 percent) have complete data from the time they were established.”

Yes it is upsetting, but we can't give up. Our children are depending on us. And this is what makes it all worthwhile: my son came to me the other day and actually thanked me for caring about the world he will live in and said he would never forget it and would do the same and hugged me. That is what this is all about.

Most of this pollution is coming from the 55,000 factory's that have been shipped from the U.S. to foreign shores. You see Capitalistic pigs love it when they don't have to fix their pollution and Communist China is perfect for them.

You see Jan it's like this. There simply isn't TIME LEFT ON THE CLOCK to do more studies.. and the men & scientists we have today are incapable of moving on balls already in motion without Proof, whereas no proof is needed when you DO THE RIGHT THING.
The right thing is to make my engines and knock the hard balls out of the ball park GOOD RIDDANCE ADIOS AMIGO.
Studying stuff is great when ya have time for studies but when ya see a big WALL FALLING ON YA you move out of the way =>THEN YOU PROVE GRAVITY.
The way they're addressing these issues guarantees failure by always operating behind the 8 ball. They end up always playing Catch-Up, and that's why all these climate & drought & flooding issues are winning.
So there ya go. People dying in droves.
On top of all that Jan they refuse to change, further guaranteeing that the world we live in today is going to be the world of tomorrow times -10.
The world is being run by the IRS, everything in triplicates over & over & over, so that by the time one smart man solves something it's TIME FOR HIM TO RETIRE, or a heart attack retires him, so someone else has to do his work all over again due to the realities of our short lifetimes.
This is the Kobayashi Maru and we're losing. Our only hope now is Jesus. We had well over a hundred years and our wheels are spinning the car sliding backwards toward a very high ravine.

The outrageous thing about all of this is, that the solutions are so easy if we really want to save this planet for the future. It is one thing to not have the knowledge or for there to be no other way. But when there are both and you still willfully neglect doing what is right for your own profit, well, that's just irresponsible.

So NBC FINALLY corrolated the extremes and trends we have been seeing with human forcings, but is that really enough at this juncture? We need to get out the truth regarding how urgent it is for us as a species to cut back on these emissions now. And here again we come to food policy, agriculture (Co2 sequestration in soil,) reforestation, renewable energy jobs, etc. If Obama then really cares, he simply CANNOT approve the Keystone XL pipeline and we need a way to sue any country that willingly continues to destroy our planet and future with these tarsands when there are already viable alternatives. They need to be made accountable for the blood on their hands! This IS also part of the reason why we need to Occupy the Earth! We cannot say we care about our children or about the future of this planet if we continue to allow this business as usual to continue. Time to Occupy Congress as well! My God, please, this is SO much more important than money! How much is this Earth worth?

6% less oxygen spread around for people to breathe too. Oxygen pumps up the human Immune System => stopping diseases & cancers.
Uhm, we're driving the wrong way. This lowered oxygen may also be the reason more people's pets have been having cancer.
Killing ourselves is ONE THING. Killing our pets a whole different animal.

The cost of hand-wringing adds to people piling into hospital Emergency Rooms 24/7. When greenhouse gases are rising so is the cost of Medical care, hospitals, dialysis and dialysis chemicals and O2 tanks and more heart attacks from reduced heart oxygen.
Greenhouse gases are destroying the American Economy.
And that doesn't even figure in more people having reduced judgement on their jobs, wrecking more equipment causing more disabled (side-lined) Workers and deaths.
Low oxygen is ripping the human race apart we may as well be out in Outer Space without a dang spacesuit on. This planet has been turned into a human species-hating orb. First it destroys the World Economy then it punches down on our chin a deadly heavy punch.
The World and Herman Cain look a lot alike right now.

20-year olds today start life on their knees already punched down. They take a gut punch to the stomach with repaying school loans. My son, one of them, is a genius above myself many times yet I advised him due to his slow start from dyslexia to go get a regular job putting up stock.
He isn't rich but he has a better car than I ever had, and it uses a great deal less fuel than the one I have now. His job, unlike Dunkin' Donuts where I worked for 7+ years, they give him a retirement plan, he has a real good Dental coverage, and so on, so he is IN EFFECT much richer than I am and I LEARNED TWO SUPPOSEDLY WELL-PAYING TRADES.
But like you say the world is being run by idiots because the answers are simple, such as turning every combustion engine into a Steam Engine Dynamo => 1. Combustion Engines = Friction. 2. Friction = Heat. 3. Heat = Steam. 4. Steam = STEAM ENGINES!
Fact is Jan a lot of people who have worked their ways into the "upper echelons" where they could exert control, could cause things to happen, they are wanting the Rapture to come, and people like that know the World has to degrade enough to bring Jesus to the people's aid. to save mankind.
Many, of many religions, want that Outcome. We do not. We don't believe in a "Rapture" it isn't even found in the Bible except one place (not the word), and they have interpreted it wrong. They are the ones who also believe the planet was created in 6 literal 24-hour days. JW's don't swallow that sucker either.
You see Jan, your struggle is NOT against the Bible it's against the people who assigned literal meanings where they should not have. TECHNICALLY SPEAKING RELIGIONS SHOULD BE ELIMINATED FROM GOVERNMENTS TO WEED THESE PEOPLE OUT.

It is a shame and indictment against this world that it's best hope is considered to be a dead fictitious guy too. We don't lack for inventors, we don't lack for new energy sources, we don't lack for schools manned with plenty of professors, we don't lack for research facilities and labs.
What we lack for is coordination. Maybe Energy Czar Chu can fix that.
