We have this technology now, it called solar cells. The difference is that he's showing a thin film cell. I've been hearing about these for years. Recent developments have improved the efficiency to near 10%. Standard cells made with Silicon are heavier and more expensive but their efficiency is close to 30%. This technology has great promise though.

Kelly_Balthrop:
A great deal more expensive, not just in the cells themselves but also in the structures required to support their mass. Yes the technology is already available but we should not be waiting for government to bring it to us. The only thing which is going to bring the price down to make it a viable alternative for most people is efficiency of scale in production, and production will not increase until demand supports it. More people need to swallow the cost of going solar to get things rolling and if we do not do it soon we are going to find ourselves shopping in China for it when we do get off the fence and turn our backs on carbon fuels

Government will outlaw it, they seem opposed these days to anything having freedom... except themselves and their corporate masters
