Apocalypse not now: 2012 doomsday debunked

On Dec. 21, 2012, many doomsday believers fear the apocalypse — anything from a rogue planet smashing into us to our world spinning end over end. However, the world should expect nothing more next year than the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, NASA says.
Many people point to the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar on Dec. 21, 2012 as evidence of the coming apocalypse, but astronomers have been quick to stress that there is nothing to be concerned about.
According to the ancient Mayan calendar, next year's winter solstice marks the end of a 144,000-day cycle. This cycle, which begins at the mythical Maya creation date, has already been repeated 12 times. The 13th will end in 2012, capping a full 5,200-year Mayan cycle of creation.
This date has long been shrouded in mystery, with many claiming that it will bring destruction to our planet.
Rogue planet Nibiru?
One fear is that a rogue planet that has been dubbed "Nibiru" or "Planet X" is supposedly aimed at Earth. Self-proclaimed Nibiru expert Nancy Lieder, who says she is in contact with the aliens from Zeta Reticuli, first said Nibiru would cause widespread disaster in May 2003, only to change it to Dec. 21, 2012.
There is, however, no evidence that Nibiru is real.
"Nibiru is ridiculous because it doesn't exist — it never existed as anything other than a figment of the imagination by pseudo-scientists who don't seem bothered by a complete lack of evidence," astronomer Don Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object program office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., told SPACE.com.
There is no basis for the claim that it might be lurking behind the sun, as it could not have hidden from observation until now, Yeomans said. If such a planet was headed toward Earth by Dec. 21, 2012, it would already be visible to the naked eye.
Cosmic alignments?
There are also concerns that planets or stars might line up in ways that will transform Earth. For instance, some theorists claim that from our point of view, the sun will cross in front of the plane of our galaxy on Dec. 21. However, the sun already does this twice a year, Yeomans said.
In fact, the sun will eventually cross the plane of our galaxy. However, the sun is about 67 light-years from the galactic plane, so it should take several million years to do so, Yeomans said. Even then, when our solar system finally does cross the plane, nothing special will occur, he added.
Some also claim that gravitational effects from planets lining up with each other will somehow affect Earth. However, there is no planetary alignment due on Dec. 21, 2012, "and if there were, it wouldn't cause any problems," Yeomans said.
The only bodies that have any significant gravitational impact on Earth are the moon and the sun, effects we see as the tides. Tidal effects from other bodies in our solar system are negligible at best, and in any case, we have experienced them for millions of years without notice.
Solar storms?
Solar storms — deluges of energetic particles from the sun — do happen, usually waxing and waning in cycles that last roughly 11 years. When these charged particles collide with Earth, they can trigger auroras and damage satellites and power lines, although not really inflicting any lasting harm, Yeomans said.
There are accounts of a solar "super-storm" slamming into Earth in 1859. Although that caused relatively little damage back then, there are concerns that such a storm might cause far more harm now that our world is more dependent on electronics.
Yet, there is no evidence that such a super-storm will happen on Dec. 21 of next year, Yeomans said.
Flip-flopping Earth?
There is some alarm that 2012 could see the flipping of Earth's poles — either the planet's geographical poles, which mark the Earth's axis of rotation, or its magnetic poles, which our compasses point toward.
But, there is no reason to fear such an occurrence, scientists said, because the moon stabilizes our planet's spin. The planet's magnetic poles do flip, but over periods of about 500,000 years, and not suddenly, "but over thousands of years," with no evidence of a flip on Dec. 21, 2012, Yeomans said.
Even if the planet's magnetic poles do flip, no real problems would occur, other than the inconvenience of us having to change our compasses from north to south, he added.
Cosmic impacts?
The Earth is always vulnerable to impacts by comets and asteroids, but giant impacts are rare, with the last major collision taking place 65 million years ago, ending the Age of Dinosaurs.
Still, astronomers do monitor the sky for near-Earth objects.
"There are no known near-Earth objects in 2012 that present a credible risk to Earth," Yeomans said. "None, zero, zip, nada."
But despite evidence to the contrary, doomsdays theorists have garnered attention, and similar prophecies will continue to proliferate unless scientists become more involved in bringing truth to these outlandish claims, Yeomans said.
Mounting hysteria regarding these unfounded doomsday predictions "will improve only if scientists get more engaged in debunking pseudoscience," he said.

Comment on "the Apocalypse Portal '2012"
Written by Aires © www.aires.spb.ru
I found the Apocalyplse 2012 portal about four months ago. My quest for Truth and answers to some questions took me there. I should say straight away that the presented material is not simple and easily accessible to most people. Working out what is what will take time. However, desire, true desire to understand the situation, find answers and quench one’s hunger for knowledge will be a great help for a newcomer to the portal. I would like to share my experience and tell you how the portal affected me and how I was studying its content.Someone interested in their future and the future of the planet in general will be curious to know how the much talked-about 2012th year and the entire affected period are interpreted. What is the “Restructuring Graph” on the main page? Undoubtedly, you came to the portal, just like me, in search for answers. And everyone who got sick of hearing about one more “end of the world”, of picking up on panic-stricken or utterly unbelieving attitudes, will be pleased to learn what is really going on. Because many people are not satisfied with just the Maya prophecy about the turn of eras. Of course, one could make do with one idea “the future will change, our history will enter a new cycle” and go on living without any worries. But that sort of thinking will never be enough for true searchers for Truth, whom I believe all frequenters of this remarkable portal to be, and whose numbers are constantly growing.

The portal is a contemporary decoding of the most famous and mysterious prophecy of all times – Revelation to St. John the Evangelist also known as the Apocalypse written on Patmos Island in the late 1st century A.D. The proposed diagram is the chronology of events unfolded linearly.

I am glad to meet a truth seeker on here. You might want to know that Rev. Ch. 7 shows us only one group is allowed to survive the great tribulation. Your portal may have many aspects of truth, I do not know, but that is the way Satan misleads many by showing glimpses of Light. JW's are getting the full spectrum, not glimpses, so I hope you expand your search to include us.

If nothing else 2012 might be the year the Mayans rejuvenate their legacy. It is unfortunate that the doomsday theory gets the attention in today's culture, when the focus could be on learning from their civilization. With physics we push the boundaries of imagination, speculation, and we make great progress. With our ancient history we stay simple and safe, and focus on the worst of the speculators.

I just filled out my calendar for 2012 put in all the movies coming out I want to see, and blu ray releases, birthdays etc etc, I put TEOTWAWKI down for Dec 21st, thats The End Of The World As We Know It just in case, ( I mean you never know) and in the mean time I am going to enjoy life as much as I can, I cant save the world or myself if it comes to that, so I might was well have a good time till then. And if things are looking dicey around Dec 21st, I will get together with family and friends and have a few drinks (I don't drink). ;-)
P.S. FYI The Hobbit comes out one week before on Dec 14th so that will probably be the last thing we get to see at the movies.....maybe they can use that for the advertising? ;-)

The ancient Mesoamericans had no concept of apocalypse or planet X. These are Christian and New Age beliefs we impose upon their culture.
13 B'aktun (12/21/12) is based on astronomy. It marks one full cycle of the 25,630 year Grand Cycle* of the Mesoamerican calenders which also happens to be one full Precession of the Equinoxes.
This is a time to honor the amazing accomplishments of the Maya and Aztec and Zapotec astronomers and calender makers who, thousands of years ago, invented a time keeping system more accurate than what we use today.
As for doom and gloom we shouldn't blame the Maya for the horrible situation we have brought on all by ourselves.*The Grand Cycle is five Great Cycles of 5,126 years each

He told me he is swamped with such questions and doesn't have the time nor the inclination to engage on a one-on-one conversation on the subject with dozens and dozens of people. However, he did take the time to send me an email for your benefit with the following:

Pourquoi 2012?
Deux stèles font référence à l’an 3114 av.

I admit that I once entertained the idea of the earth's poles being reversed at some point, but I've never bought into most of this 2012 nonsense.
I still remember clearly the fearmongering hype over the coming of year 2000 and what a load of crap that turned out to be.

The Y2K fears were well founded - what avoided the catastrophe is the fact that, all over the world, tens of thousands of computer experts and engineers familiar with the old computer languages were hired and worked 7/7 for months to update and correct the data in all the old computers that were used in running hospitals, airports, electric plants, etc. My brother was among them. They were extremely well paid and fully deserved it as they effectively averted a global series of catastrophes.

very true! the reason we escaped problems of a catastrophic nature was we took the threat seriously and acted upon it. imagine if we treated it as we treat 2012 issues, and just dismissed them as kooky, and all the programmers decided fuck cobol and pasqual and fixing the clocks, whats the worst that can happen lol

Maybe the electoral college will meet on December 21, 2012 and decide a new President. That could be auspicious.

That's very reassuring to know that everybody else failed also. We failed to break off from the herd looks like so by all rights every single one of us should die.
Unless we get a very powerful lawyer to argue on our behalf.

First off when it comes to threats like asteroids there are only a handful of astronomers looking and they have to be looking in the right place and right time to see a new one, and its a proven fact that they sometimes only see them months even weeks before they may pass near the earth. And it hardly matters anyway as we have no way to deflect an asteroid anyways heck we dont even have a space shuttle anymore.
Secondly there are threats like Gama Ray Bursts and Supernovas that can happen at anytime with little or no warning.
Thirdly the Yellowstone super volcano has been acting up and could erupt anytime.
Fourthly I am sure we only know a small fraction of what is really going on out there in the universe and most likely if something wipes it us out it will be the one thing we knew absolutely nothing about till it was too late.
And last but not least, humans seem to be a good job of messing up the planet we really dont need any help from the outside to destroy ourselves.

Bible teaching holds that the Earth will be here forever => http://concordance.biblebrowser.com/al3/ecclesiastes/1-4.htm but this "world" run of the Rich, for the Politicians, by their Wives is going down.
We just have to get past the part where the Anti~Christ gets to face the real Christ at a place called Armageddon first, where they get extinguished. Then we will have what is called Peace on Earth.
Ya can't have Peace on Earth if the Earth isn't around. HAHAHA You guys slay me sometimes though. Armageddon is a screen door. Not everyone makes it through. Screen doors are great. They keep out the flies. What we have today is a world without screen doors, and the world filled up with flies.
DUH. Everything gets corrected soon. By Jesus. But you all can debunk the other prophets all you want. No problem here.

Your post like many others on this site are hate speech and therefore a waste of time to read. You liberals always preach against hate speech but you are such hypocrates! You talk about Christians in such hateful ways. If I were to talk that way about another group it would be called "hate speech". But as long as it is just against Christians and not muslims (ect) it is okay I suppose.

Debunking pseudoscience is a pseudoscience. Yes science knows more and more about our universe everyday, yet there is still much more to learn. To me 2012 might be significant in some way, not necessarily an apocalypse, in reference to the Mayans, significant in some way because maybe the Mayans learned more about this universe than we have. What the Mayans might have learned is a big if, what is not an if, is they were quite an impressive civilization.

It's Not a doomsday event, it's a new age! A new GOLDEN AGE of reason and the downfall of the Reptilian brain. Proof, well look around, Spring Uprisings all around the World. We've entered an energy field in the Cosmic space we are currently in sometime 6 months ago, it will last for another year. Besides that the date foretold is December 21st of 2012, a changing of mans reason! Screw all though's that have been keeping the thumb down on mankind, dictators, religion, and GREEDY BASTARDS!

Mounting hysteria over unfounded doomsday prediction means I can sell a bunch of elementary-level books "proving" what's "about to happen" to a bunch of idiots.
Also, I need to work on my spooky voice so I can make YouTube videos.
