Rupert Murdoch squares off with Obama over online piracy legislation

Excerpt:

"On Saturday, the Obama administration made clear that it would not tolerate several of the more controversial aspects of the two bills, particularly the power to interfere with the architecture of the web by tampering with its Domain Name System (DNS).

""We will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global internet," said three of Obama's top technology advisers in a statement. The authors said manipulating the DNS by forcing service providers to block access to pirating sites could damage cybersecurity by driving users to much more unscrupulous servers."

    • What? Rupert doesn't want me to post those videos of him talking about influencing the outcome of elections using his media empire? His empire publishes shit all the time, some of it appropriated illegally by cracking passwords for voice mail or gaining access to computer systems which belong to other people. Much of the content his empire controls was originally created by artists, real artists not con-artists and some may feel rather unhappy about their work's acquisition by a corporation that seemingly knows no boundaries. In light of the hacking scandal you have to wonder how much of other people's work is gained by these means? Wouldn't Murdoch's domains be the first on the list for DNS blocking?

"So Murdoch has thrown in his lot with himself who threatens all software, media, art and sound creators with piracy, plain thievery, and any other meme he can think of"

    • Just goes to show that money doesn't necessarily make you smart. This cretin should shut his mouth and retire to his private island. This is America, not some small third-world country.

    • Perhaps we should thank the world's greatest (known) phone tapper for bringing to light the fact that SOPA ain't just about stopping kiddie porn and hanging those dispicable pirates (Aarrrggghhh!). What kiddie porn? And if it's out there wouldn't it be a little more effective to consider that kids have parents (or something) and they live somewhere and THERE is where you go after it? If there is piracy would not some proof of deliterious effect be in order? A number of studies, including the US govt, conclude that there is NO financial impact and we should point out that BigBiz is happy to use ostensibly illegal sharing when it suits them and damn it when it doesn't. It's just VCR and CD wars all over again. The game changes. They feel persecuted so they prosecute.
It's about ownership, not creativity. Owners create nothing but the chains of ownership. They believe that humans would cease to be creative unless they are owned.
But mostly it's about globilization. Remember; the neo-cons told us how it was irrefutible, inevitable, and we must spread our wonderfulness about the earth.... at gunpoint if we have to. But the internets are getting in the way. Global capitalism is good. Global communication... uh... not so good. It's kinda hard to fabricate wars when people know their lives are pretty much the same. Remember when the Berlin Wall came down? We looked at the Russians, they at us, and we both scratched our heads and said, "What was it exactly that we were so hell-bent about anihilating each other over?"

Exactly. Yet it's fascinating how many people don't get that, even here. For most it's all about "piracy is theft". Wonder if they would also like life in prison for 5 over the speed limit? :)

Remember how Obama used the internet very effectively in the run-up to the last presidential election? The reason he won't sign off on SOPA is b/c doing that would severely affect his next election. Conversely, the reason the reptards are pushing so hard for this ban is b/c they think doing away with the internet freedom we now enjoy is the only way to keep Obama from winning again.

Pwr 2 the UNITED 99%! GUILLOTINE ALL fucking reptards and their 1% overlords!

Could be, though I think the net has gotten so entrenched that it might be hard to see an advantage for either party. The GOP probably sees it as problematic because their BS is so deep and making that evident to many is easier and cheaper with the web. Hard to control "message".
On the whole I don't feel good about the prospects. I think O plays this like he played indefinite detention: talk the talk and sign it anyway after it's "softened" to be "less restrictive" or something. It is an election year though. We might be able to stall it until the 2013 Congress. No telling. The Dems love that West Coast movie/music campaign money.

Later wolfess. Be never not awesome. :)
