Misguided efforts to combat online privacy have been threatening to stifle innovation, suppress free speech, and even, in some cases, undermine national security. As of yesterday, though, there’s a lot less to worry about.
The first sign that the bills’ prospects were dwindling came Friday, when SOPA sponsors agreed to drop a key provision that would have required service providers to block access to international sites accused of piracy.
The legislation ran into an even more significant problem yesterday when the White House announced its opposition to the bills. Though the administration’s chief technology officials officials acknowledged the problem of online privacy, the White House statement presented a fairly detailed critique of the measures and concluded, “We will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.” It added that any proposed legislation “must not tamper with the technical architecture of the Internet.”
…
Though the administration did issue a formal veto threat, the White House’s opposition signaled the end of these bills, at least in their current form.
A few hours later, Congress shelved SOPA, putting off action on the bill indefinitely.

There is probably a whole room full of bills for proposal designed by the proponents. They'll dress them up, rename them, poll people until they are fairly confident it's as deceptive as possible and release sequels into the foreseeable future. Controlling free speech and access to information is of the highest priority to these people.

Well, let's not break out the streamers and noisemakers just yet, it's still to be seen whether Obama will follow through on his veto threat.

Nothing to do with Obama.

An anonymous reader writes
"In a surprise move, Representative Eric Cantor(R-VA) announced that he will stop all action on SOPA, effectively killing the bill. This move was most likely due to the huge online protest and the White House threatening to veto the bill if it had passed. But don't celebrate yet. PIPA (the Senate's version of SOPA) is still up for consideration." - 5 months ago

The bias in this post made me laugh out loud. It's amusing seeing a few people desperately grasp to make connections that don't exist.

This is good news, SOPA and Protect IP Act are both horrible, terrible, etc.
However, the headline is partisan and misleading. Obama did not succumb to pressure - Obama never supported or proposed SOPA or the Protect IP Act. The Obama administration simply did the right thing by informing congress that they oppose any legislation that would hinder free exchange on the Internet.

Good post, maasonova. Thanks.
Still, Dagum below is absolutely correct. Remain vigilant. This is politics: it ain't over til it's over. Even then they may have slipped it by you in the night.
Probably the most reliable source on this is Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.com). For timely info follow them on twitter. - 5 months ago

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble but this may have only been a tactical withdraw/smokescreen.
While the double pincer may have been stopped, the companion bill, the Protect IP Act (PIPA) S.968, which is in the Senate, is still on. Harry Reid wants to bring it up the first day the Senate is back in session. He has promised a vote on it. It goes before the Senate on January 24.
The Senate and PIPA is where we should focus our efforts and attention now.

It looks like PIPA is much farther along in Senate than SOPA was in the House.
It looks like the votes are there. Sen Leahy, Patrick J. [VT} is the sponsor and PIPA has 40 co- sponsors, and surely an additional easy 10+ other Senators will vote for it.
What is frightening is that it appears that PIPA is out of committee and unto the Senate floor. All that remains is a vote. Most people are going to be caught off guard as all the attention has been paid to SOPA, but the Senate could literally vote on PIPA the day they get back.

If you want to keep it inflated, you can think of it like this: Enough of the public and online communities were aware and put enough pressure on congress to put SOPA into a coma before it could leave the House judiciary committee, which is much more than they were expecting and is pretty impressive. We just need to quickly turn that focus and energy onto the Senate for total victory.

Sounds like a victory for the freedom of the internet and all the online communities that protested, wrote and called their congressman and the white house. They broke under the pressure.
Be vigilant. They'll try it again though. Must likely by stealth. By attaching individual provisions of SOPA by amendment to unrelated bills and getting it passed bit by bit.
