A super-battery that produces enough electricity to power nearly 1,400 homes, the Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell has been producing clean electricity at a "steady rate" for weeks at a SolVin plant part-owned by Germany's BASF in Antwerp, northern Dutch-speaking Belgium.
SolVin is a market leader in vinyl, or PVC production.
The fuel cell converts the chemical energy from hydrogen into clean electricity through an electrochemical reaction with oxygen, and "has generated over 500 MWh in about 800 hours of operation," Solvay said in a news release.
The company said this equates to the electricity consumption of 1,370 families over the same period.

Very interesting. It may not be practical for Automotive uses, Yet, but it is a Very interesting possibility for power plants. Need more research. Now, if we can just get the TeaPublicans to realize that 'Investments' in technology to help the 'People', not just mega-corporations, IS Worth investing our tax dollars in. ;-)

Polyvinyl chloride hate that shit too, out gasses and degrades causing people to consume toxins they were never meant to consume...
Hemp would be better..... Make good "plastics" out of it, can even engineer it to be biodegradable at a fast rate thereby gradually eliminating all the damn petroleum plastic pollution...

Not really that big of a deal. Just make sure your affairs are in order before you start playing with pure hydrogen in the garage. :)

First, the production of PVC is terrible for the environment in more ways than is practicable to describe here. Second, this technology was invented in the United States more than a half-century ago.

Just to clarify...... PEM tech is about 50 years old from NASA and has been the system we've heard about for decades to power electric cars. Doesn't look like that's gonna happen. The problem is hydrogen. A serious traffic accident with a tank of hydrogen would likely have a "Hindenberg" effect.
SolVin makes vinyl. Hydrogen is a byproduct so they're looking for a way to sell it. That's okay but brings up the issue of vinyl production. It's the no. 2 plastic in the world, typically produced from oil, and is hard to get rid of or recycle. With any system we have to consider the whole materials cycle. - 3 months ago

Just a few dozen to power the city of Wichita, and think that this tech is in it's infancy, improvements can be expected.

This is what happens when you subsidize renewables and not fossil fuels, new tech, new jobs and new energy, this fuel cell can be powered by solar during the day to provide power at night.
