GOP not listening to its own scientists on climate change

"No GOP candidates or policymakers want to touch the issue, and those of us trying to educate them are left frustrated," Kerry Emanuel, an atmospheric scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a registered Republican, told InsideClimate News. "Climate change has become a third rail in politics."
Heading into the 2008 presidential election, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the Republican nominee, warned about the dangers of global warming. He was one of a group of moderate Republicans who used to be leading climate action advocates, acknowledging the scientific consensus on climate change and the need for federal policies to address it.
But with the rise of the Tea Party movement in 2009, skepticism or even flat-out denial of global warming has become part of the party's core message. And no candidate now vying for the GOP nomination can admit to the scientific consensus, much less advocate for measures to curb climate-altering emissions, no matter what positions they might have taken in the past.
In fact, past support of policies to regulate carbon dioxide, a global warming gas, is being used to question the fitness of candidates to become the party's nominee. During a speech this month at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Rick Santorum tore into his GOP presidential rival, former Gov. of Massachusetts Mitt Romney, for buying into man-made warming and supporting the nation's first cap-and-trade program known as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. Romney later opposed the scheme but Massachusetts did participate, and it has benefited from the nearly $500 million in economic activity the program has brought to the state.
A Tea Party favorite, Santorum has called global warming "a facade," "a hoax" and an example of the "politicization of science." Both Romney and Newt Gingrich, another candidate for the party's nomination, have stepped away from their previous stances that humans are contributing to global warming in order to convince restive voters and donors that they are conservative enough to be the party's luminary.
The GOP's hardening stance in favor of climate skepticism, however, is not reflected among the country's leading scientists, no matter the party. Roughly 98 percent of U.S. climate researchers are convinced that rising emissions from human activities is hastening climate change, according to a 2010 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
While it's rare for scientists to disclose their political affiliations, InsideClimate News tracked down a handful of leading climate and environmental scientists who have done so and are registered Republican or have a majority of their values in line with the party. All accept the consensus that Earth is warming mainly from the buildup of greenhouse gases produced from the burning of fossil fuels. And all say their attempts to talk with GOP politicians and their aides about climate dangers have largely fallen on deaf ears. Calls and emails to the campaigns of Santorum, Romney and Gingrich for comment were not returned.
Five Scientists Share Their Stories
Behind the scenes, conservative scientists nationwide have attempted to approach presidential hopefuls and their aides, members of Congress and in some instances state politicians in order to educate them on the growing body of climate research.

Republican scientists should seriously consider becoming Democrats.
The GOP is antiscience, from evolution to stem cell research to contraception to global warming. There is an enormous difference between these parties contrary to what some activists claim. - 1 year ago

of course they are. they are being cast by the machine as the villains to a certain demographic, and need to act the role. how else are they going to distract and control us into fighting with each other over stupid labels and parties that mean nothing in a system that is rigged from the gate?

I agree. It's too obvious at this point. All we see are the same political barbs and trashing with people taking sides based on politics that does no good in moving us forward to solutions to this and other crises we face. Political division is the direct antithesis to progress and that's how the 1% like it. I wonder if years from now when sea levels have risen and the landscape has changed to the point where survival not politics is the first thought if those that look back at these days will feel anything but utter comtempt for us.

yeah there can be no doubt of what is going on around us, what we and circumstance have done to the biosphere. it is so unbelievably beyond a doubt that anyone arguing the point must have another agenda, because who wants to look the fool just by supporting such an obvious lie as 'climate change is not occurring at a terrifying pace'

You have just embarked on a journey to a place, not mentioned on any map, where some scientists identify with the Republican Party. Next stop, the Twilight Zone.

Actually, those scientists identify with science and a party that once did also. And in all honesty, how many candidates for office this year of any party are making climate change their signature issue? Perhaps if Democratic candidates led the way and actually set the tone we could make some headway on it.

This is like if the pope in the 1600s said "the Earth obviously revolves around the Sun" and the cardinals were like "I'm still not so sure."

No, I was saying THEIR OWN PEOPLE are telling them this is the way it is AKA the Pope to his cardinals instead of Galileo and they're still not convinced.
I know who actually said it to them. It's because it's THEIR OWN SCIENTISTS telling them that I made the analogy of how bizarre this is would be AS IF the Pope instead of Galileo said the Earth went around the Sun and they didn't believe it.

Global warming isn't even a political issue in the first place, it's a scientific issue that can be backed by solid facts. The only reason they attempt to deny climate change is because they are supporting the gargantuan oil companies.

Excerpt from the article:
"To support their positions, Bickmore of Brigham Young University said he believes GOP leadership is getting their climate information from the roughly two percent of American climate scientists who remain skeptical. Or worse yet, he said, they're listening to skeptics who have non-climate backgrounds and are on the payrolls of skeptic think tanks like the nonprofit Heartland Institute. This month, leaked documents exposed plans by Heartland to spend $200,000 to develop a K-12 curriculum to undermine the teaching of global warming in public schools.
For now, these GOP climate scientists may find some comfort in the fact that their understanding of global warming aligns with most moderate Republicans.
More than 60 percent of moderate and liberal Republicans, which make up a third of the party, say there is "solid evidence" of global warming, up from about 40 percent two years ago and the same as the American public at large, according to a national survey by the Pew Research Center released late last year. Thirty percent of Tea Party-leaning Republicans share this view."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This makes what they are doing even more despicable. They know it is real and needs to be addressed, but are listening to the minority with the $$$$$ even against a third of their own party who see the facts of it. There really is no political impasse here regarding Americans who are not being influenced by special interests. That is just more lies from those interests seeking to misinform out of greed and fear and to keep us divided. So, if the 60% of moderate and liberal Republicans joined with the other Americans out here in raising their voices and saying they will not vote for a candidate who bows to the lies for $$$$ because they are putting the future in jeopardy, we could see some definite progress here. - 1 year ago
They don't listen to science, because its not about science, its about money. To help combat climate change industry will have to spend money it doesn't want to spend. So they've been distorting and outright lying about the truth. But I have noticed in recent weeks that the right is not rejecting the concept of climate change as it once did. I've actually heard them say that climate is real, but its too late to do anything about it. Has anyone else been hearing this as well?
Yes, like I said in my first post reality is catching up to them. Here's to hoping it all caves in on them before it is really too late for us to do something about it. We're getting closerto that tipping point every year. Newt Gingrich sat on a couch with Nancy Pelosi a few years ago for Al Gore's Climate Project telling people that global warming was a problem. They know full well this is real and the science backs it up. Now that their funding scheme has been outted, I hope they pay for their deliberate willful deception that has cost lives with people in their own party speaking out. We've got to get beyond the partisan politics on this crisis.
I also think there are many more people out here of all politics who see that climate change needs to be addressed, but Republicans especially are fearful of being honest. It is the politicians and the media funded by the fossil fuel industry that have worked to mislead on that.
"Now, many have given up trying and the few who continue notice very little change after speaking with politicians and their aides."
~~
At least for some this is not a political issue/crisis. I said years ago that once this was made a politically partisan issue with each side claiming ownership of it to appeal to their own agenda (particularly Republicans in bed with the fossil fuel industry) it would be dead. I've given up trying as well and for the life of me do not understand why anyone would think these ignorant, selfish ideologically oil driven lemmings could be reached at this point. We will not solve this or even come close to adapting to its effects waiting for anyone be they Republican or Democrat in this government to have a moral epiphany. We then have to move them out, particularly anyone associated with the climate denial funding organizations that funnel their funding to the Tea Party that was also hijacked, or anyone else deliberately using their politics to cause death and destruction for their own profit.And instead of engaging these accomplices in their petty uninformed distractionary rhetoric, we should be using the Internet and social media to bring truth. They just can't stand that. The consequences of inaction now will most certainly put the world our children and grandchildren live on in peril, thus putting them in peril as well. The best scientists of every scientific organization on this planet have been stating this and publishing this in peer reviewed literature for decades. But more importantly, reality has shown us the repurcussions of apathy in allowing our entire political process to be bought and sold. Even to buy off a party whose members at one time actually did care for the planet because they understood that it effects us all.
Republicans in the Congress and those running for president, you SHAME your predecessors.
Perhaps out of this however, people are finally coming to realize just how important caring for the environment is to ALL our lives. Without it we don't breathe, we don't have clean water, we don't have biodiversity, we don't have health, we don't have safe food -- we don't have life.
If these politically ideological, anti-science oil whores want to subject their children to this... if they think so little of their own families that they would continue to place their own ambitions above them and this reality, then I say to hell with them... Though I still feel for their children even though they do not care for mine. That should not stop the truth in working to address this for all of us and our children. That is not about being Republican or Democrat, or even being a member of a religion. That is about being human. This is why it is so important to win the conversation, but that doesn't happen if you allow "them" to always control it. That has been and is our biggest mistake.
I applaud those scientists out here of all politics doing this work and all citizens of all politics who understand how urgent this is to our future. To those set on continuing the lies for political gain, ideology and ambition and causing division, you are on the wrong side of history. And you won't get away with it. Reality is and will catch up to you. You've been outted.
