The Presidential Candidates are Silent on the Essential Facts of Climate Change

Image

Although Barack Obama and Mitt Romney sprinkle their speeches with mentions of energy and climate, they have remained stubbornly silent on the immediate and profound task of phasing out a carbon-based economy. Their failure to connect the dots and do the math imperils our nation and prevents the development of a national and global plan to respond to the most urgent challenge of our era. It's time for their climate silence to end.

The graph below depicts select major statements related to climate change by President Obama and Governor Romney dating back to the 2008 presidential campaign. Please view the data page for a comprehensive list of their statements and our methodology.

    • "To avoid catastrophic global warming, we need to keep 80% of known oil, coal and gas reserves buried in the ground."

Yet, oil companies already have plans to burn it all and politicians are giving them that chance. Romney says I like coal, and Obama says me too and gas.
W T F? Let's all sing Kumbaya... When James Hansen stated it would be "game over" for the climate to burn this, he wasn't kidding around. And yet, people are now in East Texas now risking their lives to keep the Keystone XL from being built so we can keep some of that dirty carbon intensive tarsands in the ground... and another media blackout ensues. Silence is betrayal.

It's immoral. So much for Romney's statement about leaving debt to future generations being immoral... he doesn't seem to think leaving this kind of world to them is however. And as for Obama, well, disgust is the only word I can muster.

    • This was sad. Obama missed a huge opportunity to talk up green jobs and made in the USA alternative energy. Romney doesn't care or doesn't believe in AGW. No real hope from either of these bought and paid for corporate spokespeople.

    • Jim Lehrer failed at his task to ask the most important question! But then, since PBS just recently interviewed a climate denier on their station and gave credence to his lies to great backlash it's no wonder they ignored the people as well. The natural gas/oil industries have also got a hold on public television.
