Men have a biological clock and it is ticking
Men - as well as women - have biological clocks that start to tick in their mid-30s.
The chance of successfully impregnating a woman falls if a man is over 35, a French study of over 12,200 couples having fertility treatment suggests. The chance of both natural and assisted conception is significantly lower if the man is over 40. According to researchers, the problems are linked to DNA damage in sperm.
The new study has shown that the risk of miscarriages does not only increase with the mother's but also the father's age. If the father is in his late 30s, miscarriages are more common than if the man is younger. If the man is over 40, the chances of a successful pregnancy are even lower.
According to Dr Alan Pacey, a fertility expert at Sheffield University and secretary of the British Fertility Society: "Previous studies of couples trying to conceive naturally or undergoing IVF have shown that men over the age of about 40 are less fertile than younger men. Moreover, if they do achieve a pregnancy their partners are more likely to miscarry. This study reinforces the message that men aren't excused from reproductive ageing." biological clock affects male fertility
The biological clock ticks for men as well as women, doctors warn today, after research found that male fertility begins to decline when they reach their mid-30s.
Doctors said men who wait until their 40s before starting a family face a greater chance of their partner having a miscarriage, because of the poorer quality of their sperm.
Researchers examined patient records of more than 12,000 couples treated at a fertility clinic in Paris, and separated out the influence of male and female ages on the couples' chances of having a baby.
They found that women whose partners were 35 or older had more miscarriages than those who were with younger men, regardless of their own age. The men's ages also affected pregnancy rates, which were lower in the over-40s.
Doctors have long known that a woman's fertility drops sharply in her mid to late 30s, but the effect of age on male fertility is less well understood. Among women, miscarriage rates typically double to 40% between the ages of 20 and 40.
The findings are a concern, researchers say, because of the trend for men to delay fatherhood. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show the typical age of married fathers rose from 29.1 in 1971 to 34.1 in 2003. The age of men having children outside marriage has remained stable at about 30. And, for the first time, more women in Britain are giving birth in their early 30s than in their late 20s. Doctor fined for severing man's penis
Romanian surgeon Dr Naum Ciomu was ordered to pay $795,000/£400,000 in compensation to a patient whose penis he severed during an operation.
The surgical accident occured in July 2004 during an operation on the patient's testicles. Instead of making an incision to the testicle, Ciomu severed the penis instead. The now 38-year-old victim's penis was reconstructed using a piece of muscle from his arm, but its function is aesthetic only.
In addition to the monetary fine, Ciomu was handed a one-year suspended prison sentence by the Bucharest Magistrates Court on Friday.

'Mental risk' of Facebook teens
Children growing up alongside the rise of social networking websites may have a "potentially dangerous" view of the world, says a leading psychiatrist.Dr Himanshu Tyagi said sites such as Facebook and MySpace may be harmful. He told the Royal College of Psychiatrists annual meeting people with active online identities might place less value on their real lives. And the West London Mental Health NHS Trust expert added this could raise the risk of impulsive acts or even suicide. Dr Tyagi said that people born after 1990 did not know a world without the widespread use of the internet.
He warned that the current crop of psychiatrists were perhaps not fully prepared to help young people with internet-related problems.
While social networking sites offered great benefits, he said, there were potential pitfalls. everything moves fast and changes all the time, where relationships are quickly disposed at the click of a mouse, where you can delete your profile if you don't like it, and swap an unacceptable identity in the blink of an eye for one that is more acceptable." "People used to the quick pace of online social networking may soon find the real world boring and unstimulating."It may be possible that young people who have no experience of a world without online societies put less value on their real world identities and can therefore be at risk in their real lives, perhaps more vulnerable to impulsive behaviour or even suicide."
He called for more investigation and research into the issue.
However, Graham Jones, a psychologist with an interest in the impact of the internet, said that while over-use of social networking sites could lead to problems, the risks posed by them had been overplayed Children growing up alongside the rise of social networking websites may have a "potentially dangerous" view of the world, says a lead... more -
Lunchtime lock-in to fight obesity amongst schoolchildren?
According to children's minister, Kevin Brennan, secondary pupils under the age of 16 should be locked in school premises at lunchtime to fight the obesity crisis in Britain.
New research carried out at London Metropolitan University has shown the extent to which children buy large quantities of food and drinks that are high in fat and sugar during lunchtime. The figures show that some students left school to buy junk food more than 11 times a week and sometimes consumed their daily recommended alowance of fat and sugar in a single sitting.
According to Brennan, keeping students on school grounds, where only healthy food options are available, was one means of supervising and controlling their eating habits. However, teachers have stated that this move is logistically impossible to carry out, while parents have complained that it takes away parental choice and is extremely patronising, especially towards older children. Body's own 'cannabis' is good for the skin, scientists find
"Scientists from Hungary, Germany and the UK have discovered that our own body not only makes chemical compounds similar to the active ingredient in marijuana (THC), but these play an important part in maintaining healthy skin.
This finding on "endocannabinoids" just published online in, and scheduled for the October 2008 print issue of, The FASEB Journal could lead to new drugs that treat skin conditions ranging from acne to dry skin, and even skin-related tumors ...
This research shows that we may have something in common with the marijuana plant," said Gerald Weissmann, MD. "Just as THC is believed to protect the marijuana plants from pathogens, our own cannabinoids may be necessary for us to maintain healthy skin and to protect us from pathogens."

"14,000 knife victims each year" in UK
Shocking news statistics for 2007, published by the department of health, reveals that an average of 38 knife victims were admitted to accident and emergency departments in the UK every day; amounting to almost 14,000 cases in the year.
The figure has risen 19% from 2003, while the number of females injured has also risen to 10% of cases.
Dr Tunji Lasoye, A&E consultant at King's College Hospital, London claimed that "the numbers of stab victims coming into A&E have gone up", and while "it used to be that we would see isolated cases at weekends ... now it is nearly every day of the week." Worryingly, the age of victims has gone down, with many of the victims in their mid-teens.
These statistics come after a number of knife related deaths of teenagers in the UK, particularly greater London, in the first six months of 2008. Shocking news statistics for 2007, published by the department of health, reveals that an average of 38 knife victims were admitted to... more -
We Feed The World
Ok this photo is pretty much the opposite of what is going on in this movie. But this is a MUST watch.
The film is about the people who are feeding our world currently. It gives the perspective of some of the people who are running industrial large-scale farms. Very interesting. Shows what has happened to the agricultural system in the EU and how many small farms have been lost because of that process.
This in part has to do with the Codex Alimentarius laws that are eager to become the universal laws governing our food, but also brings up the responsibility that the consumer has for fueling the degradation of our food system. They say that consumers have done this by lonly ooking at the appearance of the food they buy, and wanting it cheap. As we know this sort of consumer is a highly manipulated capitalist robot, missing vital connection to their senses.
We have become so tied up with appearance that we have lost flavor.
This is why the homegrown revolution is also called the delicious revolution: follow your tastebuds to freedom!

Worms, parasites draining US poor
Diseases caused by worms and parasites are draining the health and energy of the poorest Americans, an expert said. And diseases associated with the developing world, such as dengue fever and Chagas disease, may become a bigger problem for the United States as the climate changes, said Dr Peter Hotez of George Washington University and the Sabin Vaccine Institute in Washington.
"The message is a little tough because they are not killer diseases - they impact on child development, intellectual development, hearing and sometimes even heart disease," Hotez said in a telephone interview.
He said the diseases help to keep people mired in poverty, as infections may last years, decades or even lifetimes.
"Throughout the American South during the early twentieth century, malaria combined with hookworm infection and pellagra (a vitamin deficiency) to produce a generation of anaemic, weak, and unproductive children and adults," Hotez wrote.
The parasitic diseases are having similar effects now.

No more birds and bees? Sex education for 4-year-olds
Children as young as four should be given compulsory sex education in order to reduce abortion rates and sexually transmitted infections amongst teenagers.
The Family Planning Association and Brook, two leading sexual health charities, are pushing for an earlier and more gradual and thorough introduction of sex education in British schools. At the age of four, children would be taught about the name of body parts and basic ideas about different relationships. The charities claim that the government is not providing enough information about sex and relationships to young people, leaving many teenagers with unrealistic expectations about sex and insufficient knowledge of how to protect themselves against STIs and unwanted pregnancies.
Brook chief executive Simon Blake said: "All the evidence shows that if you start sex and relationships education early - before children start puberty, before they feel sexual attraction - they start having sex later. They are much more likely to use contraception and practise safe sex."

Backyard Fireworks Not Always a Blast
n a few days, windows will rattle, dogs will howl and neighbors will get so mad at each other they'll never talk again.
All because of backyard fireworks.
A year ago, a Cleveland firefighter killed three people in a rage over a July Fourth neighborhood fireworks show. And while people find Terrance Hough Jr.'s shooting spree unconscionable, some say they empathize with what he went through from the nonstop noise and lack of sleep.

New green technology controls fire ants without harmful chemicals or poisons.
What started out as a heat lamp, a waffle iron, a timer, and one retired Texas rancher, has evolved into a non-toxic fire ant control system with two U.S. Patents to its credit. This is a “green”, long-term solution to the fire ant nightmare and it is perfectly named, The AntAgonizer.
The guiding principles of the invention were discovered by long time Mills County Rancher Sid Brooks. Sid became fascinated by fire ants and their behavior around food and electricity. After some ideas and experimentation, Sid came up with a rudimentary contraption that was both killing and driving away fire ant colonies. Some ants would die on the spot. Others would wander around in circles a bit. According to Sid, “They were dead, they just hadn’t been notified yet.” Without these foragers, food was not getting to the queen and her eggs. Colonies were abandoned.
The AntAgonizer is now top tier technology. Development and design is by Alan Abele, a brilliant engineer with eight U.S. Patents to his credit, several of those in the aerospace industry. Two are for The Antagonizer, one for the innovative timer that controls pulses of infrared energy. The second is for the methodology of the unit, in other words how it kills and controls fire ants. Abele stated, “This product represents the fusion of the biological and engineering sciences and it works.”
The AntAgonizer uses small pulses of infrared energy to disrupt and ultimately destroy fire ant colonies. The system controls fire ants without using toxic chemicals that can poison property, contaminate water resources and endanger children, pets, livestock, fish, waterfowl, and beneficial insects.
The Antagonizer has been in development for almost seven years, says Ginger Spies, AntAgonizer principle. “During that time we have learned a lot about the behavior of fire ants and we have heard stories that are just amazing. We know of a fire ant attack that ended a funeral service and sent people running for their cars; of golfers who couldn’t putt out because of infested greens; of football players who were taken to the hospital during a game because the field had been treated with pesticides earlier that day; and numerous attacks on small children and the elderly. Fire ants are truly capable of spectacular injury and damage.
Sid Brooks, retired rancher, has started a movement and it’s one he hopes will contribute to a major paradigm shift for the way we treat the Earth and ourselves.
