    • The writing's on the bone: 'Allah meat' astounds Nigerians

Diners have been flocking to a restaurant in northern Nigeria to see pieces of meat which the owner says are inscribed with the name of Allah.

What looks like the Arabic word for God and the name of the prophet Muhammad were discovered in pieces of beef by a diner in Birnin Kebbi.

He was about to eat it, when he suddenly noticed the words in the gristle, the restaurant owner said. A search of the kitchen's meat revealed three more pieces which bore the names. The meat was boiled and then fried before being served, owner Kabiru Haliru told newspaper Weekly Trust.

"When the writings were discovered there were some Islamic scholars who come and eat here and they all commented that it was a sign to show that Islam is the only true religion for mankind," he said.

The restaurant has kept the pieces of meat for visitors to see.

Thousands of people have already gone to the restaurant to see them since they were discovered last week.

A vet told the newspaper the words "defied scientific explanation".

"Supposing only one piece of meat was found then it would be suspicious, but given the circumstances there is no explanation," Dr Yakubu Dominic said.

Yum yum. Last week's meat for restaurant visitors to pore over before they eat (I hope) slightly fresher dishes from the restaurant. It's enough to make you hungry! Did you ever find Jesus's face inscribed on your toast? Would you bite his halo'd head off? When I was seven I found 'Satan' spelled out in my Alphabetti Spaghetti but I suppose it doesn't count.

    • Illegal genetically modified soya oil uncovered in swoop

"Two-thirds of restaurants, cafes, pubs and takeaways tested in a Trading Standards swoop in Surrey were found to be breaking the law on GM foods. Officers who visited 56 premises found 37 (66%) were cooking food in oil made from genetically modified soya without labelling the dishes. It is illegal for caterers to use GM ingredients without telling customers.

Trading Standards manager Peter Denard said labelling advice was now being sent to over 2,500 caterers in Surrey. None of those found to be using GM oil illegally was aware of the EU-wide labelling rules, which came into force in 2004, he said. Restaurants using GM oil must state it clearly on their menus or on a prominent notice.

"Consumers have a right to make an informed choice on the type of food they eat, whether it be GM or non-GM," said Councillor David Harmer."

Is the restaurant you eat in using GM foods? You have the right to ask.

    • Most 'Walkable' U.S. City: SF Is A Step Ahead

The city by the bay is the most "walkable" in the nation, according to rankings set for release today by WalkScore.com, a service designed to help those seeking a less automobile-dependent life. The distinction encompasses a host of environmental, health and economic advantages.

WalkScore, a division of Seattle software company Front Seat, evaluated the 40 largest U.S. cities based on residents' proximity to grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants, movie theaters and other amenities. Hills were not taken into account in the rankings, just distance and concentration.

San Francisco scored an 86 out of 100, besting New York's 83 and Boston's 79. Seventeen of San Francisco's neighborhoods ranked 90 or above - considered a "walker's paradise" - including Chinatown, the Mission, Nob Hill and Haight-Ashbury.

Someone must have really needed the cash. Did they really think they wouldn't be caught?

In some ways this reminds me of the Wendy's thumb incident. I guess some people never learn.

The air of Kyiv at the border of 19th/20th centuries is perfectly reconstructed in Pervak restaurant. This restaurant has several halls, each of which having its own name, that bring the clients to the beginning of the past century. You may have a dinner in "Bessarabka hall", or take a short in a "Public store" (a kind of a pub), or stay in Lipki hall having a cup of coffee or relax in "Country" hall.

The “Tsarskoye Selo Restaurant” was the first Ukrainian national restaurant and it still preserves this image. In “Tsarskoye Selo you will have an opportunity to feel the marvelous atmosphere of warmth and coziness . The staff of “Tsarskoye Selo” strive for careful preservation of historic traditions and it must be admitted that they do this perfectly; everyone can make sure of it by visiting the restaurant.

    • 'Modern Toilet' Restaurant Sounds Awesome

"As a man who frequently blogs and eats his lunch on the john, I know all about the benefits of canning your food (!). And now there's a restaurant in Taiwan that is cashing in on what I've known for years -- eating on the throne is the shit (!).

Patrons sit on toilets for seats and eat food off covered sinks and bathtubs. The food is served in a mini-toilet bowls and patrons drink out of mini travel potties. To finish the atmosphere, toilet paper is provided in the place of napkins.

"It's really unusual, so special that it doesn't gross me out," said Betty Tsai, 16, a Taipei high school sophomore trying Modern Toilet for the first time on a friend's recommendation.

But for a few customers, the toilet humor is too much. "My son thought it was disgusting and didn't know if he could finish his food," said Taipei mother Lin Li-ju.

Wow, Lin Li-ju, it sounds like your son has a problem. Namely that he was born with a vagina and doesn't know how to appreciate the finer things in life. Seriously, if I had one of those oldschool TV-dinner stands I don't think I'd ever leave the bathroom. So yeah, I once saw a little kid at Home Depot urinate in one of the unplumbed toilets they had on display. I wonder if they have similar problems here. Well, my legs are going numb, time to get up.

Several more pictures and a video news report about the place, after the jump."

    • Famous NYC restaurant is racist, sexist - and coming to San Francisco!

Central Park's famous Tavern on the Green Restaurant has just offered a $2.2 million settlement to settle a racial discrimination lawsuit filed last fall by the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. What were they guilty of, you ask?

"In a news release announcing the settlement, the commission said on Monday that Tavern on the Green had 'engaged in severe and pervasive sexual, racial and national origin harassment of female, black and Hispanic employees.'

"The federal commission said the sexual harassment had included graphic comments and demands for sexual acts, as well as groping of women’s buttocks and breasts.

"When the commission filed the lawsuit last September, it also said a top manager had engaged in severe harassment of black employees and had harassed Hispanic employees, sometimes addressing them as 'ignorant immigrants' and ridiculing their accents.

"Moreover, the commission said the restaurant had retaliated against employees for refusing to consent to the harassment or for objecting to it."

      ...

"When the E.E.O.C. filed the case last September, it asserted that the restaurant — not just one manager — was guilty of sexual harassment because it 'knew or should have known of the severe and pervasive harassment, yet failed to exercise reasonable care to prevent and correct promptly the harassing behavior.'"

And now the very same restaurant is scheduled to open a San Francisco branch in summer 2009. Tavern on the Green will take over the top floor of Yerba Buena's Metreon, making it the city's largest restaurant. Is this the type of establishment San Franciscans want in their city? My guess is no.
