    • Man breaks underwater cycling record

Lowered into the sea by a team of local scuba divers, Mr Innocente mounted the bike at a depth of 92ft (28m) and rode along a 360ft (110m) long underwater slope, dodging mud pools and rocky outcrops.

Continuing his descent, Mr Innocente, 62, smashed his own previous world record of 197ft (60m) which he set three years ago.

The Milan-born Italian set the new record in the waters of Portofino's maritime marine reserve, at midday on Monday.

He took nine minutes of deep sea pedalling to reach the 213ft (65m) mark.

"It was tough because I ran into more mud than I expected," he says.

"I had to click up a gear to make pedalling easier".

The world record was verified by the judge of the World Guinness Records, Lucia Sinigagliesi, who had come from London specifically to witness the record attempt.

Mr Innocente, who undertakes these record attempts for charity, says he is on a mission to prove that mountain bikes can be ridden anywhere.

Having travelled to the wilds of Alaska and the plains of Kenya proving his point, Mr Vittorio decided seven years ago to combine his cycling with his other great passion, scuba diving.

Mr Innocente says that he first had the idea for underwater bike riding whilst leading a group of German tourists scuba diving off the island of Elba, 25 years ago.

He says that when one member of the group simply found an old bicycle on the seabed, he picked it up and began to ride it.

Following this world record, it is clear that Mr Innocente dominates the world of underwater cycling.

In 2001 he also set the speed record for underwater cycling when he pedalled 1,200m in a swimming pool at an average speed of 87 cm/second.

The 20 day journey takes the green quartet across the entire country - from Land's End to John O'Groats. • Bicycle thieves: 3,000 of Paris's free bicycles stolen

The self-service, Parisian bike-for-hire – the vélib' – was intended mostly for short rides when it was introduced 12 months ago.

More than 3,000 of the sturdy grey bicycles have gone missing since then. Some have turned up as far away as Romania and, according to one report, Australia. Another 3,000 have been deliberately destroyed or damaged. But the 16,000 bikes in circulation have proved extremely popular. The idea – a cheap, computerised system of self-service bicycles in racks on almost every street corner – has been exported to countries across the world, including Austria and Spain, with plans for a similar system in Finland, Australia and the United States.

The vélib' has had its problems. Three vélib' users have been killed. Motorists complain that the bikes have tempted thousands of unskilled, unwary cyclists on to the unforgiving streets of the French capital. The 1,200 automated vélib' racks have also occupied thousands of spaces which used to be available for on-street parking. One enraged motorist ceremonially "hanged" a vélib' bike on a parking sign.

The vélib' has also been hailed as a triumphant, new form of win-win public service. All the proceeds go to the Paris Town Hall, which has pocketed €20m in the first year. All the costs are borne by the street advertising company JCDecaux. In return for providing and servicing the bikes, the firm has been given 1,600 free advertising spaces.

(Excerpts / John Lichfield, The Independent)

    • London's Ethnic Minorities Less Respectful of Cyclists?

A claim on the London cycling blog Velorution suggests that London's racial minorities are less respectful of cyclists, and therefore pose more of a threat to their safety.

Blogger Andrea says "in my evening meanders around town, whenever I am in an area with predominance of Africans, Jews, South Asians, Cockneys or other uncivilised lovers of black tinted windows, the respect for vulnerable road users sinks to Thirld World levels. Here we have a risk of falling to the lowest denominator."

Is there any truth in these claims? Or are they simply lazy racial stereotypes?

    • Physician charged with stopping his car suddenly in front of two cyclists.

Driver under the influence of non-existent common sense.
      -

Christopher Thomas Thompson, 59, was charged with two felony counts each of reckless driving causing injury and battery with serious bodily injury in connection with a July 4 crash.
Prosecutors allege that on July 4, Thompson slammed on the brakes of his red Infiniti sedan in front of two cyclists riding downhill on Mandeville Canyon Road. Authorities said the impact flung one cyclist through the car's rear window and the other to the pavement.

Peter Swarth, Thompson's attorney, said in a statement about the July crash today: "We regret that charges were filed today against Dr. Thompson. The incident was an unfortunate accident and was absolutely not a case of 'road rage,' as some have suggested. Dr. Thompson continues to wish for the injured cyclists speedy recovery."

Watson said he skidded to the right of the car as the other cyclist skidded to the left, "right into on-coming traffic." The motorist drove right at the other cyclist, who then punched the car, Watson said. "He then drove straight at me."

Cyclist Ron Peterson, 40, whose head crashed through the car window July 4, had broken teeth, a broken nose and serious cuts on his face. The other cyclist, Christian Stoehr, 29, had a shoulder separation he said would require surgery.

Photos showing a car's shattered window and what appears to be blood-covered trunk and others showing an injured Peterson on a gurney and in a UCLA Medical Center bed were quickly posted on Internet blogs, prompting outraged e-mails among members of Westside riding clubs.

Peterson said that Thompson "yelled out some profanity and, 'Ride single-file!' " Peterson said he then screamed an expletive at Thompson, who he said veered in front of the riders and "slammed on his brakes as hard as he could."

Thompson is free on $30,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 1 at the airport branch of Los Angeles County Superior Court. If convicted on all counts, he will face up to seven years and eight months in state prison.

    • UK Invests Big Money In Bikes : TreeHugger

Well, the UK has done something else right. Like all the good (and not so good) European countries they're increasing spending for cyclists.

      A couple good quotes:

"The first step in persuading people to leave their cars at home is to offer them a real choice," said Transport Minister, Ruth Kelly. "Providing a step change in cycling facilities, dedicated cycle lanes, more training and information will have a big impact on how people choose to travel."

"A quarter of journeys made every day by car are less than two miles, Cycling is an alternative that could bring real health benefits to millions of adults and children, as well as helping them save money and beat congestion."

Glad to see NY is looking into embracing bikes as opposed to restricting them.
Interesting article... we'll see how far it goes...
Seems to be that Bloomberg is changing his stance on two wheelers.. Let's hope it's true.
      Ride on!

NEW YORK - Call it the Great Bike Way.

New York City plans to turn a swath of Broadway in midtown Manhattan into a bike lane and public esplanade _ leaving two fewer lanes for vehicles on the busy thoroughfare.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday that the plan will benefit the environment as well as people's health.

The Broadway plan will "give us a lot more room to walk on the streets and to get people ... out of their cars and walking, which is good for their health and also good for the environment," Bloomberg said on his weekly radio show.

The area, called Broadway Boulevard, will run from 42nd Street eight blocks south to the busy shopping district of Herald Square, which includes Macy's department store. The esplanade will be flanked by a pedestrian walkway with cafe tables and umbrellas, separated from vehicular traffic by planters filled with flowers.

The area's Fashion Center Business Improvement District is working with the city's Department of Transportation to create the street plazas, at a cost of $700,000. Jan Gehl, an urban designer based in Copenhagen, was hired as a consultant.

Work already is under way. The esplanade is to open in mid-August, with newly painted pavement and plastic traffic barriers popping up on the street.

The project is in line with Bloomberg's vision of reducing New York's traffic and pollution by encouraging bike riding and other alternatives to cars.

City transportation officials also are exploring other possibilities _ from banning cars on Park Avenue on three Saturdays in August to a bicycle-sharing program.

    • Have you tried the new low-car diet?

With gas prices at a record high and public transit a cost-effective and greener option, now's a good a time to ditch your car. Car-pooling organization Zipcar is trying to ease the transition with the "Low-Car Diet." Beginning 21 July 2008, they're challenging North Americans to go car-free for a full 30 days. They will replace participants' car keys with a complimentary transit pass, a free one-year Zipcar membership, drive time credit and a number of other perks from local partners. In the New York City area, Zoo York will aid the car-less participants by donating skateboards.

The events kick off on the 21st with a ceremonial key-drop event at a currently undisclosed location. On 15 August 2008, they'll hold a completion event where people can compare their car-free experiences. Zipcar is offering the "Low-Car Diet" in ten of its American cities, plus Vancouver and Toronto.

    • Biking On The Job Enouraged To Save Gas

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. ― Riding a bike as part of the job has become standard for some workers in Colorado mountain communities like Breckenridge. It is all part of an effort by towns and counties in the high country to save money on gas and conserve.

The building inspectors in Breckenridge are now riding city owned bikes to job sites.

"So we're doing it to save fuel for sure, but the broader footprint is obviously the carbon footprint of the town," said Glen Morgan of the Breckenridge Building Department.

Construction workers are often caught off guard when the inspectors pedal up to a building in progress.

Breckenridge bought a total of six bikes for its employees to use for business errands and meetings. Frisco also has four bikes that employees can check out.

"I love them," said one woman. "They are so great. We take them out every time we have a meeting in town."

The town's police chief has a new hybrid to save on fuel as well.

Back in Breckenridge, there is contest that encourages employees to walk, bike or use public transportation to get to work.

The public works department in Silverthorne sent out a notice to employees asking them to cut back on unnecessary driving and pair up for jobs if possible.

    • How the Bicycle Emancipated Women

      womanlicious!
a good quick snippet back in time with women and bikes, and horses and the bra.
      -
      I love history.

--small excerpt /from the mentalfloss blog--
Before bicycles came along, the horse was the best means of individual travel. Of course, women’s access to horses was limited. Horses were dangerous and difficult to control; conventional medical wisdom suggested that riding them could damage a woman’s genitals. Women were supposed to ride sidesaddle, with both legs hanging off one side. In that unnatural position, women were unable to ride for long distances, reinforcing the idea that they shouldn’t be riding at all.

Bicycles, by comparison, were easy to manipulate. There was no reason a woman couldn’t get on a bike and sedately pedal farther from her home than she’d ever been before. No reason, that is, other than her cumbersome attire and the convention that if she did so, she’d either have her virtue corrupted or die of exhaustion.

As the bicycle continues to lend itself to causes of all kinds, it is important to remember its first battle. Liberating is a word easily associated with cycling. Flying down a tree-lined road with the wind in your face is certainly a liberating experience, but for early female cyclists, a simple bike ride was liberating in a much more significant way.
