"Sinful" dancing insults Islam
"Indonesian songstress Inul Daratista will face more controversy when she performs at Stadium Bukit Jalil here on Sunday, just 10 days after the contentious cancellation of her concert in Johor Baru.
This is because members of Pas Youth are planning to disseminate 10,000 flyers which state that the concert is not in line with Islamic values and those watching it are committing a sin.
Federal Territory Pas Youth chief Kamaruzaman Mohamad said this yesterday at the City Hall headquarters in Jalan Raja Laut.
Earlier, he had presented a memorandum to Kuala Lumpur Mayor Abdul Hakim Borhan to cancel the concert this weekend.
Kamaruzaman and four other Pas Youth members presented the memorandum to the mayor's special officer, Shaari Ahmad Junid, who accepted it on behalf of the mayor.
On Pas Youth's reason for going all-out to protest Inul's concert, Kamaruzaman said:
"Have you seen her in action? Just go to the YouTube website and type her name and you will see that her shows are quite obscene. Even I can't bear watching her."
He said her concerts were known to make the crowd go "wild sexually" and that this could lead to social problems.
"Once they go wild, some will resort to sex by the roadside. So it's best that her concert does not go on," he said.
He added that City Hall must stop her concert as it did not adhere to rulings by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim).
"In Indonesia, although Inul is now known as 'Hajjah' (having performed the Haj), she has also been labelled an obscene dancer by the Indonesian Ulama Council. So what more can I say?"
When asked to comment on the perception of Pas Youth as being "Taliban-like and orthodox" in opposing concerts such as Inul's, Gwen Stefani's and Beyonce's, he said the party had a valid reason for doing so.
"In Islam, you cannot just watch others committing sin.
"As long as you are able, you should let those committing sin know that what they are doing is wrong and if possible, stop them from doing so," said Kamaruzaman."

The writing's on the bone: 'Allah meat' astounds Nigerians
Diners have been flocking to a restaurant in northern Nigeria to see pieces of meat which the owner says are inscribed with the name of Allah.
What looks like the Arabic word for God and the name of the prophet Muhammad were discovered in pieces of beef by a diner in Birnin Kebbi.
He was about to eat it, when he suddenly noticed the words in the gristle, the restaurant owner said. A search of the kitchen's meat revealed three more pieces which bore the names. The meat was boiled and then fried before being served, owner Kabiru Haliru told newspaper Weekly Trust.
"When the writings were discovered there were some Islamic scholars who come and eat here and they all commented that it was a sign to show that Islam is the only true religion for mankind," he said.
The restaurant has kept the pieces of meat for visitors to see.
Thousands of people have already gone to the restaurant to see them since they were discovered last week.
A vet told the newspaper the words "defied scientific explanation".
"Supposing only one piece of meat was found then it would be suspicious, but given the circumstances there is no explanation," Dr Yakubu Dominic said.
Yum yum. Last week's meat for restaurant visitors to pore over before they eat (I hope) slightly fresher dishes from the restaurant. It's enough to make you hungry! Did you ever find Jesus's face inscribed on your toast? Would you bite his halo'd head off? When I was seven I found 'Satan' spelled out in my Alphabetti Spaghetti but I suppose it doesn't count.

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Israelis hit by new digger attack
A Palestinian in a mechanical digger has rammed traffic in west Jerusalem, injuring at least 10 people before being shot dead, Israeli police say.
A bus and a number of cars were hit during the incident. Some cars were crushed and one was turned on its roof.
Witnesses say an armed civilian first shot at the driver, before he was killed by border police.
Three weeks ago a Palestinian man went on a deadly rampage in a heavy vehicle in Jerusalem, killing three Israelis.
A BBC correspondent says it is thought the 2 July attacker was simply a disturbed man without political motivation - but Israelis will worry Tuesday's incident was a copycat attack and that this could now be a new tactic.
Police identified the perpetrator as 22-year-old East Jerusalem resident Ghassan Abu Tir. It is not known if he was connected to any militant group.
Gunshots
The latest attack took place in a busy part of central West Jerusalem, close to the King David Hotel where US presidential candidate Barack Obama will be arriving within hours.

As the incident was unfolding, Israeli President Shimon Peres was for the first time receiving Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas at his official residence in Jerusalem, which is also nearby.
"I was going home when I saw the tractor going into a bus four or five times. All the windows of the bus exploded," said a 16-year-old Israeli at the scene.
"Then I saw the tractor going down the street pushing cars. I saw more people running and after two minutes I heard two or three gunshots," Yohanan Levine added.
A driver interviewed by Israeli TV said his car was rammed twice by the front shovel of the digger and he only just managed to swerve to avoid a third charge aimed at his head.
Photographs of the immediate aftermath show the driver's body slumped in the cab and at least eight bullet holes in the glass next to him.
Official visit
Israeli police called it a "terror attack", although there was no immediate claim of responsibility by any Palestinian militant organisation.
Police said the driver was from a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank which Israel has designated part of the enlarged Jerusalem municipality.
Mr Abbas told reporters he "condemned and rejected" the attack and said such incidents "hurt our reputation and peace in general".
It was the first time a Palestinian Authority president had visited the Israeli presidential residence, known as Beit Hanasi.
Mr Abbas was welcomed in a formal ceremony with Palestinian flags flying at the reception point. Such trappings are normally absent when Mr Abbas meets Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert at his official residence.
In his remarks, Mr Peres said: "Israelis have a burning desire to reach peace with the Palestinians."
Mr Abbas has been meeting Israeli leaders regularly since attempts were made to give the peace process fresh impetus at an international conference in the United States last November. Iran authorities hold Islamic women's 'fashion show'
"Iran's hardline authorities have organised a 'fashion parade' to showcase correct female Islamic dress.
Some 60 rigorously Islamic outfits were modelled during the event - each completely covering the women's bodies from head to toe.
Iran's Culture and Islamic Orientation Minister Saffar Harandi hailed the Islamic 'fashion parade' as "unprecedented".
"This is an unparalelled event for Iranian women, who until now have not had the opportunity to dress how they want to but have been forced to wear whatever the fashion industry imposes on our society," Harandi stated.
Journalists and photographers attended the show but few members of the public.
The 'fashion show' followed a 'moralisation drive' launched by Iran's authorities that was aimed at clamping down on Western-style dress and hairstyles." "Iran's hardline authorities have organised a 'fashion parade' to showcase correct female Islamic dress. ... more -
Saudi man 'wins' 10-yr-old in deal with her dad
DUBAI (AlArabiya.net)
A 60-year old Saudi man who was set to marry a 10-year old girl—he 'won' in a bet with her father—has postponed his marriage after protests from human rights groups, press reports revealed.
The fate of the little girl was decided after her father dared the elderly man to marry a second wife and teased him about being afraid of his current wife. The elderly man accepted the challenge and asked for his daughter's hand in marriage, Saudi newspaper Al-Madina reported.
The father couldn't retract the challenge and accepted the proposal, asking for a 100,000 riyal dowry, the paper said, adding the two men finalized the marriage procedures and the couple even underwent pre-marital tests, which shocked staff at the lab.
The Saudi National Human Rights Association sent a letter to the Emir of the northwestern city Hail, where the girl lives, and to court to stop the union.
The Association stated that the union is in violation of the international treaty for the protection of children from early marriages, of which Saudi Arabia is a signatory.
The residents of Hail shared the same sentiments and were actually the ones who demanded that the Association intercede to stop the marriage.
Last March, the Association stopped the marriage of a 12-year old boy and his 11-year old cousin in the southwestern province of Jizan.
Saudi sociologist Abdullah Al-Harbi said that in these kinds of marriages the father technically sells his daughter, since the groom-to-be usually pays huge amounts of money to marry a younger girl to "satisfy his sexual desires."
"These marriages usually end up in failure, and the girl usually goes through trauma due to living with a man who is much older," he said. DUBAI (AlArabiya.net) ... more -

More religions, more trouble
THE separatist conflict in Indonesia’s Papua region—formerly known as Irian Jaya and once one of the world’s great liberal causes—has become relatively quiet in recent years. Small groups of protesters still occasionally gather to wave the Morning Star independence flag and get arrested for it. But decades of repression by the Indonesian security forces, combined with the granting in 2000 of partial autonomy from Jakarta, have sapped the separatists’ ranks. However, according to a recent report on the region, there is a risk that the separatist conflict may be rekindled or replaced by religious strife because of the arrival of new and more muscular forms of both Islam and Christianity.
...
The report, by the International Crisis Group (ICG), a think-tank, says rising religious tension has already come close to triggering violence between Muslims and Christians, as is already common in the nearby, mixed-faith province of Maluku. In Kaimana district, for example, members of the two religions had long lived together harmoniously. But in December locals came close to blows over the erection of an iron tower shaped like a Christmas tree, topped with a Star of David—often used by charismatic Christian groups but best known as a symbol of Judaism.
The new Christian groups have raised Muslims’ hackles by boasting (sometimes falsely) of their conversions of Muslims. Muslims, in turn, have become increasingly vigilant against any perceived threats either to their faith or to Indonesian sovereignty. Some Islamic radicals are prone to conspiracy theories about plots to prise Papua away from Indonesia, often involving America and its majority-Christian regional allies, Australia and the Philippines.
Increased fundamentalism has sharpened each ethnic group’s fear of domination by the other. The Indonesian government has discontinued its programme of transportation to Papua and elsewhere to relieve overcrowding on Java. But migrants are still flooding in. Official figures show that in 2004 Muslims were 23% of the region’s 2m-odd population, up from 6.5% in 1964. In reality the proportion of Muslims is thought to be much higher, probably over half now—but the government has not published accurate updated figures.
Christians believe this is a cover-up to hide the truth: that migration has made Papuans a minority in their homeland. They also fear that the government in Jakarta is increasingly endorsing Islamic orthodoxy at the expense of Indonesia’s non-Muslims. The Muslims, in turn, agree that they are now the majority in Papua—a local Hizb-ut-Tahrir leader recently claimed that Papua is 65% Muslim—but they feel that Papuan autonomy could lead to them being discriminated against or even expelled from the region.
There are some moderating influences: last year, mainstream Muslims set up a new body, the Papuan Muslim Council, to put the case for tolerance. Some of the charismatic Christian groups, far from inciting separatism among ethnic Papuans, argue for accommodation with the Indonesian powers-that-be (render unto Caesar and all that). Even so, argues the ICG, there is a danger that continuing migration, combined with the radicalisation of both main religions, could re-ignite the dormant separatist conflict.

Muslim "judge" rules kidnapped Christian girls "converted to Islam and cannot retu...
The district of Muzaffargarh rules in favour of the Muslims, rejecting the request from the family that wants to bring home the two sisters - 13 and 10 years old - kidnapped last June 26. Christian associations charge that they could end up as prostitutes.
Islamabad (AsiaNews) - District judge Mian Muhammad Naeem, of the section of Muzaffargarh, has ruled that the two Christian sisters "have converted in a legitimate manner to Islam", and for this reason they cannot be "restored to their family of origin". Setting aside the request from their father to regain custody of his daughters, the judge also admitted the "validity" of the marriage of the girls to two Muslims.
Saba Younas, aged 13, and her sister Anila were kidnapped last June 26 in the village of Chowk Munda, in the province of Punjab, where they had gone to visit their uncle, Khalid Raheel. This is the same uncle who in recent days reported their kidnapping, asking for help from news organisations and human rights groups. According to Raheel's account, a Muslim fruit vendor named Muhammad Arif Bajwa kidnapped the girls, and then handed them over to a friend, Falak Sher Gill, who then organised the marriage between his own son and the older of the Christian sisters, Saba. In court, moreover, father and son both stressed the "complete willingness of the girl to contract marriage".
The girls' uncle does not conceal his preoccupation, and denounces to AsiaNews that the Muslims involved in the kidnapping are acting as a "gang", recruiting the girls in order to "make them work in a bordello". This alarm has also been heard by the Catholic commission for justice and peace (NCJP) in the country, which confirms the words of Khalid Raheel: the kidnappers are believed to be human traffickers linked to prostitution, known to the police and under the protection of some local politicians. "For these unscrupulous people", charges Naeem Asghar, local coordinator of the NCJP, marriage is a pretence in order to control the girls, run their lives and exploit them for their own business purposes".
The Catholic community continues to uphold the cause of Saba and Anila, and promises that the family will not be left to itself. Expressing the hope that the girls will be brought back home, the coordinator of the NCJP emphasises that "an appeal will soon be presented to the high court of Multan, to contest the decision of the district judge" and have the girls "restored to their parents". Sister called 'bad Muslim' after stabbing
"A Henrietta man accused of stabbing his sister in May called his sister a "bad Muslim," according to court papers. Waheed Mohammed was in court Friday. Monroe County Sheriff's deputies arrested Mohammad at a Henrietta intersection in May. He and his sister Fauzia were driving themselves to the hospital after police say he stabbed her at their Linhome Dr. house.
"I won't characterize the motivations underlying what happened or what allegedly happened,” said prosecutor Joe Walford. “Ultimately those will all come out at the appropriate time."
Attorneys say Mohammad stabbed his sister more than 10 times. In court papers, investigators write that Mohammad told them he was angry when Fauzia said she was leaving for New York City.
The statement goes on to say, "He described her as a 'bad Muslim girl' and that he did not approve of her clothing. They argued and he got angry. Waheed retrieved a knife from his car, stabbed Fauzia inside and outside the house."
A hearing will now determine whether those statements will be part of the trial. "Different people are trying to label this an honor attack, but quite honestly that doesn't appear to be the case," said defense attorney John Bradley. Bradley said this is more a case of domestic violence, and that no one in the family believes the stabbing was to somehow maintain their honor.
"The only mention of anything about her behavior that might have predicated anything was about her wanting to work or go to school or engage in more American type of activities that maybe they wouldn't approve of but are not the kind of thing that would result in some honor attack," said Bradley.
Bradley said Fauzia lives on her own now and continues to recover from her wounds. While the defense hasn't determined what approach it will take, Bradley said Mohammed's past in Afghanistan may explain some of what happened that day in May.
"He had been kidnapped, witnessed the murder of two of his friends by the Taliban. [He] once tried to leave Pakistan, was stranded on a boat for weeks without food and water, he was sent back and eventually came here to America.” Bradley said Mohammad is now being treated with medication in jail.
Mohammad is due back in court August 1."

"Cat Stevens" wins lawsuit- magazine lied about his Muslim practices
Musician Cat Stevens - now known as Yusuf Islam - has won libel damages over articles suggesting he refused to talk to women not wearing a veil.
The stories also claimed that the singer - a Muslim convert - would only speak to women other than his wife through a third party.
His lawyer told The High Court in London that "Mr Islam has never had difficulties working with women".
The World Entertainment News Network agency has already apologised.
'False impression'
Its article, entitled "Yusuf Islam ignores bare-headed women", was distributed to its subscribers including Contactmusic.com, read by more than two million people per month, which also published an apology on its website.
Mr Islam's laywer, Adam Tudor, told the court the allegations had caused the singer "considerable embarrassment and distress".
He said that the defendants now accepted that the claims were "entirely false" and had "created an utterly false impression of attitude to women"
"In his normal life, women feature among some of the most influential people in Mr Islam's team."
Mr Tudor added that the story "cast serious aspersions, quite wrongly, on his religious faith, which is of the utmost importance to him".
WENN and Contactmusic.com also agreed to pay the singer's legal costs, while the damages have been donated to his charity Small Kindness.
The musician, who converted to Islam in 1977, was not in court.
In 2005, Mr Islam won substantial libel damages from The Sun and Sunday Times after they falsely claimed he supported terrorism.

Plea To Spare Death Row Terrorists
Brian Deegan - whose son Joshua, 22, was among 202 killed in October 2002 - said killing the trio risked turning them into martyrs.
He wants their death sentences commuted to life in prison.
Mr Deegan, in an open letter to Indonesian authorities, wrote: "Nothing will return my son to me, to his mother, his family and his friends.
"But the execution of a selected few who were responsible for his death and the death and maiming of hundreds more will not cure the pain.
"I see that no good will come from their execution. I see only harm.
"I will not beg for their lives to be spared. But I seek that which I consider more appropriate. A penalty which will serve as a constant reminder to others. A penalty which will not destroy the lives of their families."
Mr Deegan, a barrister and magistrate in Australia, said he and his footballer son were opposed to the death penalty in all cases.
Authorities have convicted more than 30 Islamic militants over the attack and the three are the only ones on death row.
An Indonesian court has this week rejected a final appeal by the trio - they can still appeal for clemency to the president, but have said they will not do so.
None has shown any remorse and maintain their acts were sanctioned under Islam as revenge for Muslim deaths in Afghanistan and elsewhere.
Islamic militants have carried out three other major attacks on Western targets in Indonesia since then.
The last, in 2005, was also on Bali when three suicide bombers killed 11 people in restaurant attacks.
It is feared the execution of the men could trigger a backlash in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation.
But most analysts expect any reaction to be small and most likely limited to a show of solidarity at their funeral. Brian Deegan - whose son Joshua, 22, was among 202 killed in October 2002 - said killing the trio risked turning them into martyrs. ... more -
Yusuf Islam wins damages for ‘veiled women’ slur -
Yusuf Islam, formerly Cat Stevens, on Friday accepted libel damages and an apology from a news agency which reported he refused to talk to women at an awards ceremony who were not wearing a veil.
The artist, who changed his name after becoming a Muslim in the late 1970s, will donate the "substantial" payout to Small Kindness, a UN-linked charity which he chairs.
Adam Tudor, the singer's solicitor, told London's High Court that the story behind the legal action was published by World Entertainment News Network and was used on Contactmusic.com, a Web site said to have 2.2 million page views a month.
The article appeared in March 2007 and suggested that the singer was "so sexist and bigoted that he refused at an awards ceremony to speak to or even acknowledge any women who were not wearing a veil," Tudor said.
"It went on to suggest that Mr. Islam's manager had stated 'Mr. Islam doesn't speak with women except his wife. Least of all if they don't wear a headscarf. Things like that only happen via an intermediary."'
Tudor said the article had embarrassed the singer, creating a false impression of his attitude to women and also casting serious aspersions on his religious faith.
World Entertainment News Network issued an apology, saying:
"We now accept that these allegations ... are entirely without foundation, and that Mr. Islam has never had any difficulties working with women, whether for religious or for any other reason."
Islam, 59, is still best known for his hits as Cat Stevens, including "Wild World," "Morning Has Broken" and "Moonshadow."
He sold an estimated 60 million albums as Stevens, but retired from showbusiness in 1978 after converting to Islam. He released his first mainstream pop album since then in 2006.

UK government funds Islamic thinkers to stem extremism

As part of the initiative, Oxford and Cambridge will host a group of scholars who will "lead debate" on issues such as the role of women, and "loyalty to the UK".
However, this move has angered some Muslim "hardline activists", who are accusing ministers of trying to create "state-sponsored Islam."

Mosques becoming increasingly not welcome in Europe
LONDON — Europeans are increasingly lashing out at the construction of mosques in their cities as terrorism fears and continued immigration feed anti-Muslim sentiment across the continent.
The latest dispute is in Switzerland, which is planning a nationwide referendum to ban minarets on mosques. This month, Italy's interior minister vowed to close a controversial mosque in Milan.
Some analysts call the mosque conflicts the manifestation of a growing fear that Muslims aren't assimilating, don't accept Western values and pose a threat to security. "It's a visible symbol of anti-Muslim feelings in Europe," says Danièle Joly, director of the Center for Research in Ethnic Relations at the University of Warwick in England. "It's part of an Islamophobia. Europeans feel threatened."
The disputes reflect unease with the estimated 18 million Muslims who constitute the continent's second-biggest religion, living amid Western Europe's predominantly Christian population of 400 million, Joly says.
