Who Should be Obama's pick for VP?
"Barack Obama, the likely Democratic nominee, has two options in his hunt for a partner on the Democratic ticket. He can double down on strengths or he can compensate for weaknesses. If he mimics the last Democratic president and chooses the former (Bill Clinton selected another young Southerner, Al Gore, in 1992), the decision-making process is relatively easy: Find someone youthful and energetic with a devotion to reform, a foreign policy approach that rejects conventional wisdom, and a short or nonexistent Washington resume. If Obama chooses the latter, however, things are decidedly more complex. Does he choose a VP who bolsters the ticket on foreign policy or on executive experience? Is there anyone with foreign policy expertise who isn't a creature of Washington? Does he find someone with appeal to working-class voters in Appalachia or white women nationwide? What about Jews in Florida and Latinos in the Southwest? And hanging over all of this is the geographic question—does Obama pick someone who hails from a swing state that he or she can deliver?"

Winona LaDuke on Power Plants on Indian Reservations "Just because you can, doesn'...
"A power company now has the opportunity to pit Native against Native, thanks to a handful of former tribal chairmen. Firetail Energy Systems (represented by former Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal Chairman William Schumacher) and the Inter-Tribal Economic Alliance (represented by J.R. Crawford, former tribal chair at Sisseton-Wahpeton) along with Multi-Tribal Energy Co. and CEFCO LLC of Texas just became players in a very controversial proposal for a coal-fired power plant near the Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota reservation in South Dakota. As a result, Otter Tail Power Co., the electric utility building the plant, is having a heyday.
The proposed plant, called Big Stone II, would put a 500-megawatt power plant upwind from the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate community and use billions of gallons of SWO water annually to feed the Minnesota power grid. The SWO tribe and other indigenous interests, as well as numerous environmental groups, have contested the proposal, which has also met with hefty opposition in Minnesota - a state that has a renewable energy mandate, not a coal mandate. Schumacher, Crawford and their associates have entered this decisive fray on the future of energy production by advocating a continued reliance on coal...."

Bill Clinton's tirade stunned some delegates
The Bill Clinton who met privately with California's superdelegates at last weekend's state convention was a far cry from the congenial former president who afterward publicly urged fellow Democrats to "chill out" over the race between his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Barack Obama.
In fact, before his speech Clinton had one of his famous meltdowns Sunday, blasting away at former presidential contender Bill Richardson for having endorsed Obama, the media and the entire nomination process.
"It was one of the worst political meetings I have ever attended," one superdelegate said. The Bill Clinton who met privately with California's superdelegates at last weekend's state convention was a far cry from the congenia... more -
'Obama can't win'
A new ABC report sheds more light on the spirited exchange between Senator Hillary Clinton and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson when Richardson called Clinton to tell her that he was endorsing rival Senator Barack Obama: Clinton insisted Obama could not win the Presidency.
Sen. Hillary Clinton, and former President Bill Clinton are making very direct arguments to Democratic superdelegates, starkly insisting Sen. Barack Obama, cannot win a general election against presumptive Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain.
Sources with direct knowledge of the conversation between Sen. Clinton and Gov. Bill Richardson, prior to the Governor’s endorsement of Obama say she told him flatly, “He cannot win, Bill. He cannot win.”
Despite her appeal, Richardson ultimately endorsed Obama- which sent Bill Clinton into a purple rage last weekend during a private meeting with California superdelegates.
The Clinton campaign’s main focus now seems less on arguments for Hillary Clinton, her ideas and what she can do for the country than constant pounding on negative themes about Obama. Barack Obama says "I don't think that we can take nuclear power off the table."
Q: Would you be in favor of developing more nuclear power to reduce oil dependency?
A: I don't think that we can take nuclear power off the table. What we have to make sure of is that we have the capacity to store waste properly and safely, and that we reduce whatever threats might come from terrorism. And if we can do that in a technologically sound way, then we should pursue it. If we can't, we should not. But there is no magic bullet on energy. We're going to have to look at all the various options.

Gov. Bill Richardson Delivers Ringing Endorsement for Obama
Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, threw his strong support behind Obama for president Friday, one of the most coveted endorsements in the race for the Democratic nomination. As part of his endorsement statement, the New Mexico governor claimed that Obama confirmed his leadership abilities this week with his speech about race.

Clinton aide: Richardson endorsement insignificant
Former Democratic presidential candidate and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson finally made up his mind and endorsed Sen. Barack Obama today, but a senior adviser to Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign--which likewise spent months courting the governor's nod--dismissed its significance.
"Look, I think that everyone has their endorsers," said senior Clinton strategist Mark Penn, adding-with a little huff-"I think New Mexico is a state that actually, we won."
"The time that he could have been effective has long since passed," he continued, "I don't think it is a significant endorsement in this environment."
UPDATE: Richardson calls out Clinton adviser
Bill Richardson criticized a Clinton campaign adviser Friday for suggesting his endorsement of Barack Obama is insignificant.
"I think that Sen. Obama has something special,” explained Richardson. “Something that can bring internationally America’s prestige back, that can deal with the race issue as he did so eloquently last week, that can deal with the domestic issues in a bipartisan way."

Bill Richardson officially endorses Barack Obama
Former democratic presidential nominee runner, Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico plans to endorse Sen. Barack Obama in the Democratic race for president, an Obama campaign spokesperson said.
In an e-mail to supporters, Richardson said Obama will be a "historic and a great President, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad."
Richardson also said in the e-mail that he was touched by Obama's recent speech on race in America, saying he "understands clearly that only by bringing people together, only by bridging our differences can we all succeed together as Americans."

Richardson to End Presidential Bid
That's one less Democrat making a run for it.
"New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson ended his campaign for the presidency Wednesday after twin fourth-place finishes that showed his impressive credentials could not compete with his rivals' star power.
Richardson planned to announce the decision Thursday, according to two people close to the governor with knowledge of the decision. They spoke on a condition of anonymity in advance of the governor's announcement.
The Richardson campaign would not comment on the governor's decision, reached after a meeting with his top advisers Wednesday in New Mexico.
Richardson had one of the most wide-ranging resumes of any candidate ever to run for the presidency, bringing experience from his time in Congress, President Clinton's Cabinet, in the New Mexico statehouse as well as his unique role as a freelance diplomat. As a Hispanic, he added to the unprecedented diversity in the Democratic field that also included a black and a woman." That's one less Democrat making a run for it. ... more -

2008 Pulse Poll
The results are in.
It clear that the Democratic Presidential Primary is far more competitive than beltway insiders would have you believe.
With over 150,000 votes cast, the DFA Pulse Poll is the largest internet poll to date in the 2008 primary.
The political pundits and beltway Democrats have been claiming that the primaries are already over, but 95% of the votes cast prove they are wrong.
Progressive activists want clear positions on Iraq and Iran. They're concerned with the power of special interest money in elections, and they want straight talk on issues such as funding social security and presidential power. DFA members want a Presidential candidate who will fight for progressive values and are looking for the candidates who are committed to changing the way politics is conducted in America.
Take a look for yourself. Check out the interactive results now http://DemocracyforAmerica.com/pulsepoll/results
We've heard from many of the candidates directly over the last three weeks.
Senator Barack Obama challenged DFA members to take the country forward in a new direction. Senator John Edwards demanded that as a DFA member himself, it is our time to take action together.
Governor Bill Richardson stood up for our brave men and women fighting for our country and pledged to bring every single troop home starting his first day in office. Senator Chris Dodd demanded we stop the Bush administration's abuse of power now and not wait for elections in 2008.
But no one worked harder to win your support then Congressman Dennis Kucinich. He made his progressive record on Iraq, universal health care, and the patriot act clear. He didn't just ask for your vote, he worked for the votes of your friends and neighbors. He asked his supporters to join DFA and vote to make sure you heard his message. He shot videos, issued press releases, and met with local DFA leaders and members all over the country to try and get your vote. And it worked.
Congressman Kucinich did not get the 66% required to earn the DFA Presidential Endorsement, but he did win our internet poll with an astounding 49,000 votes. Congratulations to Congressman Kucinich for working to win.
