It's as common to see a MacBook on stage these days as a guitar or keyboard. What does that mean for the concept of a "performance"? And how do laptop-heavy acts -- e.g. Battles, Girl Talk -- actually use them in their live shows? Sasha Frere-Jones explores. • An "EU-US Merger" to Precipitate Global Unification and Integration

      The EU-US Merger Project

The "timely" solution & advanced global political strategy that i propose (i.e. my very own personal contribution to humanity) to solving many if not ALL of the worlds major problems including war, corruption, global warning, poverty... lies in what i call the "ultimate power move," merging the 2 most powerful governments on the planet, the EU & the US. Precipitating or more accurately quickening the "already-in-motion" Global Unification & Integration process, toward the establishment of World Peace & World Prosperity, is the overall goal (which includes saving humanity from complete annihilation & destruction of course). Merging the EU with the US will obviously "check" all aberrant countries/nations (North Korea, Syria, Iran...) from doing things they shouldn't otherwise be doing, included in the mix of being checked will be the US & the EU of course. After merging the EU & the US other countries can then be "systematically integrated" as well if they so choose. The "button-up" approach of the "North American Union", that is the US merging with Canada & Mexico, is childs play & essentally "less relevant" compared to the "top-down" approach of an EU-US Merger. The one VERY important caveat/requirement to having a "fully unified & fully integrated planet" is having the "right people" on top, unenlightened heartless half-wits will not only "not do" but they will worsen the already f---ed up & despicable condition of humanity & planet earth & obvioulsy that's a no no. So those impressed with and interested in bankrolling and/or contributing in other ways (i.e. ideas, media attention...) to my Global Business Venture you may contact me here. Thanks, Leo (a.k.a. • You Looking At Me? Scientists Develop Electronic-Eye Camera

Engineers John Rogers of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Yonggang Huang of Northwestern University, Chicago have created an electronic eye-shaped camera that uses a new class of electronics technology that can conform to almost any shape of a human eye. The new retina-like camera sensor uses flexible photosensitive pixels.

"Using simple mechanics principles, the researchers have produced, for the first time, electronic devices on a hemispherical surface so that they can take images much like those captured by the human eye," said Ken Chong, advisor in the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Directorate, who is one of the officers overseeing the researchers' National Science Foundation grant, in a statement.

    • DEATH OF THE INTERNET !!

Alex Jones addresses the real threat of the future corporate ownership of the internet. Among many negative results some outcomes are, this would mean not only costly membership for everything, but also that you would no longer have your own domain. Everything will be under a sub domain. Like with Myspace, everything will be regulated and heavily controlled.

I know there is a bit of info on current about this. But I think this issue is so important especially for groups like current.

We are talking about the internet as we know it dieing !!! No more free speech, no more abundance of knowledge and information, this is a huge disaster.

Please educate yourself and others on this. Lets not let this happen !!!!

    • Optical illusion helps create fake speed bumps

Cathy Campbell did a double-take and tapped the brakes when she spotted what appeared to be a pointy-edged box lying in the road just ahead.
      She got fooled.

It was a fake speed bump, a flat piece of blue, white and orange plastic that is designed to look like a 3-D pyramid from afar when applied to the pavement.

The optical illusion is one of the latest innovations being tested around the country to discourage speeding.

"It cautions you to slow down because you don't know what you are facing," Campbell said.

A smaller experiment two years ago in the Phoenix area found the faux speed bumps slowed traffic, at least temporarily.

Now, in a much bigger test that began earlier this month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants to find out if the markers can also reduce pedestrian accidents.

The fake bumps are being tested on a section of road in a business and residential area in Philadelphia's northeastern corner.

But soon they will also be popping up -- or looking that way -- on 60 to 90 more streets where speeding is a problem.

The 3-D markings are appealing because, at $60 to $80 each, they cost a fraction of real speed bumps (which can run $1,000 to $1,500) and require little maintenance, said Richard Simon, deputy regional administrator for the highway safety administration.

On one of three streets tested in the Phoenix trial, the percentage of drivers who obeyed the 25 mph speed limit nearly doubled. But the effect wore off after a few months.

"Initially they were great," said the Phoenix Police traffic coordinator, Officer Terry Sills. "Until people found out what they were."

Learning from the experience in Arizona, authorities are adding a publicity campaign in Philadelphia to let drivers know that the phony speed bumps will be followed by very real police officers, said Richard Blomberg, a contractor in charge of the study.

Even after motorists adjust, the fake bumps will act like flashing lights in a school zone, reminding drivers they are in an area where they should not be speeding, he said.

    • Light fantastic: pedestrians to generate power - Times Online

      via Core77 Design Blog

"Underfloor generators, powered by “heel strike” and designed by British engineers, may soon be installed in supermarkets and railway stations.

The technology could use the footsteps of pedestrians to power thousands of lightbulbs at shopping centres. It works by using the pressure of feet on the floor to compress pads underneath, driving fluid through mini-turbines that then generate electricity, which is stored in a battery.....

In addition to floors, the technology could also be installed beneath railway lines and on road bridges to exploit the energy of passing trains and vehicles.

The plans for heel-strike generation follow successful trials last year at a bridge in the Midlands where generators converted energy from trains passing above into electricity powering a flood detector."

The pano itself was taken from a block of flats in Forest Hill and used Google Earth to get some of the heights and locations accurate. More than 50% of what you see here either has planning permission or is undergoing demolition/construction work. Buildings in 2015 include the Broadgate Centre expansion, Bishopsgate Goodsyard, Heron Quays West, Vauxhall Bondway, etc. which are longer term developments. • What's in YOUR future?

Visit this link and watch it on full speed!!

According to Edf.org, The United States is the top global warming polluter in the world. They also state that the U.S. fire season has increased by 78 days over the last 20 years. According to many sites with information on global warming, 2006 was recorded as the hottest year ever.

Despite all this information, there are still some people out there who say that global warming is a myth- my question is this: when people are presented with the cold hard facts, straight to their faces, how will they propose to solve the problem with our beloved earth?

This art speaks volumes- what are YOUR thoughts?

I know this article was written 7 years ago but I feel what was written then by McClintock still holds relevance now in our society. Our views on society as espoused by the media, government, liberals, and people in general are slowly shiftng from those of our Founding Fathers to that of the 19th century German view of Marx, Engels, Hegel, and others. It is a sad day when our freedoms are taken not by a foreign aggressor but by us (our ignorance) and our government. • Genie In A Bottle Unleashed

With insight and a creative new voice, two Chicago-area 13-year olds, Stephen Sotor and Trace Gaynor, have written, edited and produced Genie In A Bottle Unleashed, a film that explores the history and consequences of the development of the atomic bomb.

From the secrets of the Manhattan Project through the horrific devastation at Hiroshima and Nagasaki - these two 7th graders lead a new generation through our nuclear history; along the way they manage to interview Nobel prize winning scientists, the creator of the "Doomsday Clock," the mayor of Hiroshima and even a Hiroshima 7th grader about the legacy of the atomic bomb. Even more creatively, they also track down the proverbial "Genie" to find out why he has created such havoc. Screened at the United Nations, this 15-minute gem received a standing ovation.

Hmm, not bad for 13 year olds.
