iReport gives votes opinions on Palin
(CNN) -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin accepted the GOP vice presidential nomination at the party's convention Wednesday with a speech highly critical of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.
Palin, who was mayor of a small town before she became governor of Alaska almost two years ago, slammed Obama for what she insisted was his lack of political experience and accused him of being two-sided when he is appealing to voters.
Her speech received raucous applause from the convention crowd in St. Paul, Minnesota, and an equally strong reaction from iReporters across the country.
"She came in with bats swinging and hit a home run with me," said iReporter Barbara Grant of New Haven, Connecticut.
Grant, who voted for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry in 2004, said she plans to vote for Republican candidate Sen. John McCain in November. She is pleased with his choice of running mate. "[Palin] seems like a very solid person," Grant said. "I look forward to hearing more of what she has to say."

Dalai Lama Hospitalized
From the report: The Dalai Lama was admitted to an Indian hospital on Thursday to undergo tests for abdominal discomfort, his spokesman said.
"Since tests haven't begun yet, we don't know what the ailment is," Tenzin Takla told The Associated Press. "Medical tests will begin on Friday."
The Dalai Lama's office in Dharmsala said Wednesday that the 73-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader was suffering from exhaustion and would cancel two planned international trips.
On Thursday, Takla said he was "admitted to hospital because of some abdominal discomfort."
The spokesman for Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital suggested the visit was an unscheduled one
"He comes every six months for a routine checkup. Around a month ago, a checkup was conducted and he was in perfect health," Mohan Rajan told The Associated Press.
The Dalai Lama will be under the care of senior surgeon Narendra Trivedi while at the hospital, Rajan said.
"There is no cause for concern," he added.
Takla said the Dalai Lama will spend some days in Mumbai, India's financial capital, to rest before returning to Dharmsala, where he has lived since fleeing Tibet in 1959 after an abortive uprising against China.
The Dalai Lama had just returned to India from an 11-day visit to France, capping an intense few months since riots against Chinese rule broke out in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, and the subsequent government crackdown.
The spiritual leader spends several months a year traveling the globe to highlight the struggle of Tibetans for greater freedom in China and to teach Buddhism.
However, all of his appointments and visits for the coming three weeks have been canceled, including the trips to Mexico and the Dominican Republic, said Thupten Samphel, the spokesman of the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile.
Since the March outbreak of violence in Tibet, China has stepped up its campaign to vilify him, blaming him for the recent unrest, which Beijing says was part of a campaign to split the Himalayan region from the rest of China.
The Dalai Lama has denied the allegations, saying that he only seeks greater autonomy for the Himalayan region to protect its Buddhist culture. From the report: The Dalai Lama was admitted to an Indian hospital on Thursday to undergo tests for abdominal discomfort, his spokesma... more -

Russian Cameraman: CNN Aired Misleading Footage
CNN is airing misleading footage of the war between Georgia and Russia, skewing public opinion in favor of the Georgians, according to a Russia Today cameraman interviewed this morning.
The Russia Today satellite TV company aired the interview on its English language news channel but the story is yet to appear on the Internet or in any other news outlet.

Bus crash kills 13 in Texas
A bus crash in northern Texas killed at least 13 people Friday, a police spokesman said.
The bus was going north on U.S. 75 when it left the highway, went off a bridge and down an embankment about 12:45 a.m. CT (1:45 a.m. ET), said Lt. Robert Fair, spokesman for the Sherman Police Department in Sherman, Texas.
Fifty-five people were on board the bus, which was traveling from Houston to a destination in Missouri, he said. Helicopters and ambulances were taking numerous injured passengers to hospitals, he said.
The bus crashed about 60 miles north of Dallas -- about half a mile north of the intersection of U.S. 75 and a road known as FM 1417.
Investigators found a blown tire on the bridge, but its significance was not immediately known, he said.
Police did not notice any markings on the bus, which suffered extensive damage after coming to rest near a creek bed. It appeared to be a private charter, similar to a travel or tour bus, according to Fair. A bus crash in northern Texas killed at least 13 people Friday, a police spokesman said. ... more -
Anderson Cooper vs the Lohans (sans Lindsey) War of Words!
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- It appears a war of words has broken out between The Lohans and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.
While guest-hosting on "Live with Regis & Kelly" Monday, Anderson let loose on the Lohan family, including calling their E! reality show, "Living Lohan," a "train wreck."
"Allegedly a 14-year-old girl, looks to be about 60€ I say that with concern and love," Anderson said of Dina and Michael's daughter, Ali. "She allegedly wants to be a singer and or actor-slash-performer of some sort, striptease person, I don't know."
Ali's mother, Dina Lohan, fired back at the CNN newsman, telling OK! Magazine, "People are just cruel! This is bad karma for him."
Anderson kept the war of words going on his show, "AC360," last night, responding to Dina.
"Let me just reiterate, I feel bad for the 14-year-old daughter. She seems like a nice person, but she should be a kid, not in a [reality show]," Anderson said.

Ali's father, and Dina's ex-husband, Michael Lohan, came to the teenager's defense on Wednesday, sounding off to Access Hollywood about the TV host.
"I think Anderson Cooper is an opinionated, hypocritical idiot who should be an adult and keep his opinion to himself," Michael told Access. "He is the last person to judge anyone, when he and his own family have their own issues." Black U.S. AIDS rates rival some African nations
"The AIDS epidemic among African-Americans in some parts of the United States is as severe as in parts of Africa, according to a report out Tuesday.
"Left Behind - Black America: A Neglected Priority in the Global AIDS" is intended to raise awareness and remind the public that the "AIDS epidemic is not over in America, especially not in Black America," says the report, published by the Black AIDS Institute, an HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on African-Americans.
"AIDS in America today is a black disease," says Phill Wilson, founder and CEO of the institute and himself HIV-positive for 20 years. "2006 CDC data tell us that about half of the just over 1 million Americans living with HIV or AIDS are black."
Although black people represent only about one in eight Americans, one in every two people living with HIV in the United States is black, the report notes.
The report uses just-released data from UNAIDS and existing CDC and Census data to highlight grim statistics:
• AIDS remains the leading cause of death among black women between ages 25 and 34. It's the second-leading cause of death in black men 35-44.
• In Washington, more than 80 percent of HIV cases are among black people, that's one in 20 residents. iReport: AIDS in Washington's older population
"Five percent of the entire population (in DC) is infected... that's comparable to countries like Uganda or South Africa," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN for the recent "Black in America" documentary."
Why is there this racial gap? Also, just because it is affecting black people doesn't mean it needs to be a "black disease"! We are all people and need to look out for each other, no matter what your color! Black, white, whatever you are, we need to come together and work on this problem! CNN Say's House Judiciary Committee Hearing was Kabuki Theatre - Where's...
CNN should be embarrassed for promoting disrespect of Congress. Congressional hearings are an important function of American Government, and should not be disrespected by mainstream media.
Recklessly calling, House Judiciary Committee Hearings Kabuki Theatre should not be tolerated by Congress. I think if America is going to get back on track, we need to stop 'moving along'. It no longer matters what is said, we just 'move along'? Many Americans worked hard to get Congress to act. So, if CNN thinks House Judiciary Committee Hearings are a joke, what do they think of you?
The clips CNN used were chosen for a reason. They were chosen to make the investigation seem politically motivated, therefore irrelevant. Take a look the video below. Vincent Bugliosi is a former Prosecutor. He prosecuted Charles Manson, he's no left-wing liberal. Why did they try to deceive Americans? Why did they choose to make a mockery of House Judiciary Committee Hearing?
If it is true, 'you lead by example', CNN should be ashamed, facts should be reported not distorted! Media should not spin, they are making a mockery of honest journalism. CNN should be embarrassed for promoting disrespect of Congress. Congressional hearings are an important function of American Governme... more -
"Prophetic movie from 30 years ago has completely come true"
This is the movie called Network. It was released almost 30 years ago and everything presented in this film, which at the time was extremely controversial, has come true. I mean everything.
Terrorism has become a scripted reality TV show. News has become the biggest business in the world. It can make or break presidents, popes, prime ministers, etc. The television has become the mighty oracle of the this 21st century Roman/Babylonian world.
Everybody should see this movie. There are now three entire generations that have learned everything they know from the television. It has robbed them of the true reality, which is our common humanity. If there ever was something that matched the "BEAST" of revelations, it is the current state of mass television and it's constant stream of mindless dribble; demanding "watch me, do as I say, obey, procreate, consume."
When many of us came here to Current, we got the impression that finally there was going to be a beacon of truth and hope in this failing world controlled by Main Stream Media. Current inspired our imagination to defy the great Puppet Master by creating our own content and bringing the news stories to the general public.
But now a dark cloud hangs over the silver lining, what will happen in future is anyones guess, but I would like to bet on the diligence of a few individuals who carry their torches of truth. There are many things in this movie that will shock and awe you about how on target this film really was. Whoever came up with this story surely must have had dreams or seen a vision of the future to have predicted so many things about television and its power to shape the minds of human beings.
What do you think? This is the movie called Network. It was released almost 30 years ago and everything presented in this film, which at the time was ext... more -

CNN reporter says bad things about the TSA, gets hassled every time he flies
CNN reporter Drew Griffin reported on the TSA's 1,000,000+ name watchlist of "potential terrorists," and now his name seems to have been added to the list. The TSA denies it, but Griffin is held up every time he flies, and the airlines tell his that it's because he's on the list:
"Coincidentally, this all began in May, shortly after I began a series of investigative reports critical of the TSA. Eleven flights now since May 19. On different airlines, my name pops up forcing me to go to the counter, show my identification, sometimes the agent has to make a call before I get my ticket," Griffin reported. "What does the TSA say? Nothing, at least nothing on camera. Over the phone a public affairs worker told me again I'm not on the watch list, and don't even think that someone in the TSA or anyone else is trying to get even."
The TSA, which is a part of the Department of Homeland Security, said Griffin's name wasn't even on the watch list, and the agency blamed the airlines for the delays the reporter experienced. The airlines, on the other hand, said they were simply following a list provided by TSA. New Zealand Girl Ashamed of Embarrassing Name
A New Zealand judge has made a 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name can be changed from Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii, the country's national news agency reported Thursday.
Family Court Judge Rob Murfitt listed a series of unusual names that New Zealand parents had given their children, and said he was concerned that such strange monikers would create hurdles for them as they grew up.
"It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap," the New Zealand Press Association quoted the judge as saying.
Among the names Murfitt cited: twins named Benson and Hedges -- after a brand of cigarettes; Violence; and Number 16 Bus Shelter.
Some parents had named children after six-cylinder Ford cars, the news agency reported.
The Registrar General of Births, Deaths and Marriages said in a statement that it had rejected names including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Stallion, Twisty Poi -- a staple food in Polynesian cuisine -- and Sex Fruit.
A lawyer for Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii said the girl is so embarrassed by her name that friends know her as "K."
Last month, an judge in the U.S. state of Illinois allowed a school bus driver to legally change his first name to "In God" and his last name to "We Trust."
But an appeals court in the state of New Mexico ruled against a man -- named Variable -- who wanted to change his name to a two-word phrase that contains a four-letter expletive and expresses opposition to censorship.
