Places to visit in Ukraine, Kiev accommodation

Two hundred years is not a long period for ancient Kyiv, but the 1,300 meter long Khreshchatyk Street remains the most popular place in the city all year long - its Broadway, its Champs Elysees, its Nevskiy Prospekt. Khreshchatyk has been praised by bards and poets, reproduced by artists and cinematographers, and depicted on postcards and stamps. The beauty of the shady chestnuts in bloom competes with that of the human-built ensembles of post-war buildings. Although the street has plenty of shops and offices. Most of people come here not on business but just to relax.

Back in the 11th century the Dmitriyevskiy Monastery stood here. It was founded by the Prince Isyaslav Yaroslavich of Kyiv (Christian name - Dmitri). In July 1108 his son Sviatopolk (Christian name - Mikhail) started to build the stone Mikhailovska church inside the monastery built by his father. The dome was plated with gold, and the new cathedral and later the whole monastery became known as the Mikhailovskiy Gold-Domed. Along the northern border of the monastery extends the block of Barbara cells. Other cells on the side of Triokhsviatitelska Street are adjoining the bell tower.

    • Bush set to convert forests to houses

The Bush administration is preparing to ease the way for the nation's largest private landowner to convert hundreds of thousands of acres of mountain forestland to residential subdivisions.

The deal was struck behind closed doors between Mark E. Rey, the former timber lobbyist who oversees the U.S. Forest Service, and Plum Creek Timber Co., a former logging company turned real estate investment trust that is building homes. Plum Creek owns more than 8 million acres nationwide, including 1.2 million acres in the mountains of western Montana, where local officials were stunned and outraged at the deal.

"We have 40 years of Forest Service history that has been reversed in the last three months," said Pat O'Herren, an official in Missoula County, which is threatening to sue the Forest Service for forgoing environmental assessments and other procedures that would have given the public a voice in the matter.

    • A new kind of housing cycle

The best bargain in real estate might just be how you find your house.

With gas prices above $4 a gallon, it doesn't make much sense to roam various neighborhoods in an SUV anymore.

So how about taking a home tour by bike?

One Colorado real estate agent is doing just that, building his entire business around the idea of bicycling to see homes."It takes a lot more time, though, to do the bike tour," said Matt Kolb, the owner and founder of Pedal To Properties. "But I have found that the connection I make with clients -- it just brings us closer together and builds a bond that I don't think I can duplicate anywhere else."

The Boulder, Colo., real estate agent said that people "want to see the neighborhood, not just the house they are buying."

For Kolb, an avid cyclist and triathlete, it is not just about real estate but about a healthy lifestyle.

Boulder is a bit of a unique market for this business: The city has more than 300 miles of bike paths and bike lanes. But Kolb is also looking to expand the concept to other cities, recently talking with agents in Naples, Fla., and Tucson, Ariz.

    • Eligibility for Medicaid Affects Real Estate Transfer

A daughter asks about her father’s eligibility for Medicaid after he transfers his home to her. Will his eligibility for Medicaid be affected by the transfer of his real estate wealth? Find out about eligibility for Medicaid and the Medicaid lookback period by reading the full article at ThinkGlink.com or check out an excerpt below.

"Under new federal rules, the Medicaid lookback period is five years from the date of transfer. In other words, if Medicaid has to pay for your father's stay in a nursing home because your dad is broke, the government could reverse any transfer of wealth from your father to anyone for the previous five years, if they suspect him of trying to hide assets or he transferred assets that could have been used to pay for Medicaid costs.

Would you have to sell the property? Maybe. It's also possible the government would put a lien against the property that would have to be satisfied when the property is sold or refinanced down the line.

For more details, talk to your real estate attorney or an estate attorney."

    • "Housing seems to be the place where people try to live out their values"

ThinkGlink.com blogger Melanie Rogers writes about Coldwell Banker's recent statement that more people want to live in the city:

I love telling my out-of-town friends and family how I'm able to walk to the supermarket. And the dry cleaner. And that I can catch the bus or the train to get to places.

My aversion to driving is one of the big reasons I choose to live in the city. Apparently I'm not alone.

Coldwell Banker recently announced that more home buyers say they want to live in the city. Seventy-eight percent of 903 urban agents surveyed said that clients are requesting to live in the city because of rising fuel costs.

In addition, 81 percent say their clients want to shorten their commute to work. Fifty-four percent say clients say access to public transportation is appealing. Of those polled, 75 percent agree that being able to walk to places is a positive.

Some other interesting stats are that 84 percent of agents said they saw an increase in requests for properties with a home office. Sixty-four percent say clients want green features in their housing and another 42 percent say clients ask to save energy.

Housing seems to be the place where people try to live out their values. As energy prices continue to go up and eco-friendly living becomes a greater concern, I think we will continue to see more young professionals moving to the city.
