New Stoner Comedy Tops Pot Festival

LOS ANGELES, CA (Hollywood Today) 6/24/09 — It started with Cheech and Chong’s “Nice Dreams.” From there we graduated to new heights with “Dazed and Confused,” then covertly political but still bud-laden “Harold & Kumar.” The indie hit “High Society: A Pot Boiler” is the latest pot-com to smoke out the circuit. It’s official folks: stoner comedies are in.

Just ask actor Seth Rogen. Or look at entertainment like “Weeds,” “Hangover” “Clerks,” and director Judd Apatow’s wildly hilarious “Knocked Up,” which made him a super-hero and took any cynics (or lingering D.A.R.E. members) down. Even TIME Magazine couldn’t refute modern audience’s warm reception of the sometimes legal plant and its social status.
The venerable publication said, “Marijuana is more prominent, accepted, and profitable in movies” than ever.

While Disney and some others work to remove tobacco cigarettes from its presence in pictures, filmmakers keep sneaking reefer into movies like they were at an old Grateful Dead concert.

Even Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to legalize the dubage in California in order to tax it and help balance the budget.

“High Society” is no exception, with a coveted iTunes distribution deal, blazing reviews, and a smoking hot cast, it’s number one on Will Ferrell’s taste-making, tongue-in-cheek video website Funny or Die.

“High Society” will be showcased at the 4th Annual High Times World Marijuana Film Festival, Friday June 26th at 7pm at Marina Del Rey Hotel.
Screening alongside, “The Union,” “Cash Crop,” and “Strainhunters,” the film is vying for top prize - the coveted Golden Leaf Award.

“High Society” stars Erik Davies. Stephanie Ann Davies will introduce the film. The WMFF is hosted by Jack Horner. Doors open at 2pm. The Union @ 2:30 p.m., Cash Crop @ 4:15 p.m., High Society: A Pot Boiler @ 7:00 p.m., Strainhunters @ 8:45 p.m. Open to the public. Tickets available $25 all-day pass.

High Society will be available for download on iTunes in September 09. As part of their recent non-exclusive digital distribution deal with Indie Rights, a subsidiary of Nelson Madison Films, the film will soon be downloadable to buy for @$9.99 and available to rent for @$1.99. (The deliverable are sent to iTunes, the film is encoded and made available to the public. The process takes @45 days.) This deal will also utilize popular platforms like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Facebook, MySpace, etc. The distribution strategy is smart and aggressive.

James Frey joins team Michael Bay

Behold the deal-making power of recently merged mega agency William Morris Endeavor: The New York Times and The Hollywood Reporter have revealed that WME client Michael Bay has bought film rights to the first book in a six-part series of young-adult sci-fi novels co-written by none other than WME client James Frey. Riding high on his Transformers windfall, Bay reportedly paid in the "high six figures" for I Am Number Four, about a group of alien children fallen to Earth following an attack on their home planet. Publishers Lunch claims to have discovered the lucky co-writer, a 29-year-old recent Columbia MFA graduate named Jobie Hughes — also a WME client.

All of this hard-core synergy reminds us of another deal maker, Richard Abate, who scored a $3 million deal last year for Dale Peck and Heroes creator Tim Kring. Interestingly, Abate, who ran Endeavour's literary operations in L.A., was pushed out in the merger. The new NME macher? None other than Eric Simonoff, agent to both Frey and Hughes, who built his literary reputation on the likes of Jhumpa Lahiri, Nam Le, and the pre-scandal James Frey, and started making bigger and bigger book deals for Janklow and Nesbitt before jumping to William Morris just ahead of the merger.

One unresolved issue, at the moment: The book hasn't been sold yet. This may be owing, in part, to the fact that neither Frey nor his co-writer have their names on the project. When the Times' Motoko Rich called around to publishers, some who'd seen the manuscript didn't even know the fabricator turned novelist was involved. "I think we're all confused," one publisher told her. “I think we're wondering, Are you hiding it because you think it's better, and if so, why are you hiding it?'" Maybe because Frey's lying and drug abuse might not sit well with YA divisions; maybe because his first intentional novel, Bright Shiny Morning, seriously underperformed its million-dollar advance. But still, secrecy might not have been the best policy, especially given the difficulty of keeping said secret. Maybe Simonoff got a little ahead of himself — before Michael Bay swooped in, Optimus Prime–like, to save the day. Or maybe, given that Frey and Hughes are trying to sell their own separate novels at the moment, Simonoff is already thinking five moves ahead. (Hell, maybe he even leaked the names himself.) Ari Emanuel, watch your back.
