Flat panel TVs worse for the environment than a coal plant
Oh crap. It looks like these seemingly more environmentally benign TVs actually contain nitrogen triflouride, which is a pretty nasty chemical, sometimes referred to as 'the missing greenhouse gas'.
It's something that few people know about, and we need better education on the chemicals that go into our electronics!
The best promising technology is OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode), which are far superior environmentally. Let's push this technology and stop buying huge (and increasingly cheap) flat panel LCDs!

Top Gear gets scolded for "highly irresponsible" footage
Hosts Jeremy Clarkson and James May were shown drinking while driving as they tried to make it to the magnetic north pole in their Polar Special. The BBC Trust criticised the show for glamorising the misuse of alcohol.
But, the show's executive producer defended the move saying they were in international waters where drink driving laws don't matter.

Save the Internet
"The internet has was designed to be an open platform where anyone can create a website and any information can pass through a connection. If big business starts to be selective about what can pass through it will be like when the FCC cracked down on early radio expression and it wasn't long before only commercial radio existed.

The Blue Peter garden and the studios where Top Of The Pops was filmed could get listed status under new proposals
English Heritage is strongly urging the Government to recognise the cultural and architectural importance of the BBC Television Centre in Wood Lane, west London.
The conservation body wants parts of the building and its grounds - including the main studios and the Blue Peter garden - to be granted grade-II listing.
Peter Beacham, English Heritage's heritage protection director, said: "This building is not just architecturally important.

Court Backs Cable Competition
Court Backs Cable Competition
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: June 28, 2008
CINCINNATI (AP) — A federal appeals court on Friday upheld the Federal Communications Commission’s authority to set rules meant to make it easier for new cable television competitors to gain local franchises.
Local governments across the country filed legal challenges to agency rules that the F.C.C. said would speed the approval process for new competitors, cap fees paid by new entrants to local governments and ease requirements that competitors build systems that reach every home.
In a series of lawsuits that were consolidated in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, in Cincinnati, the local governments contended that the F.C.C. had overstepped its authority.
To offer cable television service, a company must negotiate a franchise agreement with the local government. Some companies contended that local governments made unreasonable demands during negotiations and held up applications.
A three-judge panel ruled unanimously Friday for the F.C.C., which it said provided evidence that the local franchising process was “unreasonably impeding competitive entry into the cable television market.”
The commission’s chairman, Kevin J. Martin, said the court ruling vindicated the agency’s action and would help consumers.
“Cable rates are continuing to rise, year after year,” he said. “Over the last 10 years, they’ve more than doubled. And I think it’s critical that we find a way to give consumers some additional choice and some more competition to help control soaring cable prices.”
Plaintiffs’ lawyers were studying the opinion and there was no immediate word on whether they would appeal. They could ask for review by the full appeals court or go to the Supreme Court.

Infomercial scams
I am sitting at my laptop in a hotel in Portland right now on vacation. My television set is tuned in to CNBC, a broadcasting station that, at least until now, I thought was a legitimate broadcasting station. I am watching an infomercial called "John Beck's Free and Clear Real Estate System," which claims that for a small fee, Beck will send you a collection of CDs from his "personal vault" of the most up-to-date property foreclosures available.
Typing his name in on Google quickly revealed that this deal, like many other infomercials was too good to be true. Complaints ranging from people accusing him of having multiple spelling errors in his literature, to empty promises of being able to meet Mr. Beck in person if they are willing to shell over thousands of more dollars to take part in his "private classes."
The thing that irks me the most about this infomercial is that repeatedly throughout the program "actual customers" pop up on the screen saying "I know this seems to good to be true, but this is national television, HOW COULD WE LIE ON NATIONAL TELEVISION!?" What has our country come to that these scams can be aired on major national television channels? 1,000s of reports have been filed with the Better Business Bureau against this guy, yet his program is still aired freely. I am a libertarian and I am all for 1st amendment rights, but blatant lying and taking poor innocent consumers is just plain wrong and frankly I am deeply disappointed.
