Remembering performer Felicity Perez (1972-2008)
Felicity co-founded the burlesque dance troupe The Cantankerous Lollies, and was a dedicated performer:
"With her longtime partner and husband Molotov Malcontent she performed classic sideshow tricks like knife-throwing, fire-eating and walking on glass for crowds large and small; together they followed their dream to go on the national circuit, touring with the legendary Ward Hall “King of the Sideshow”."
Unfortunately, Felicity died in the arms of her husband Molotov after a weapon accidentally discharged while being taught how to shoot firearms. She was shot in the stomach, and died shortly after.
She will be missed.

Philly: Notations: Gilbert and George thru 11/2
From the outset of their joint career, Gilbert (British, born 1943) and George (British, born 1942) explored and redefined picture making while bridging the gap between art and life. Dressed in suits and often displaying decorous manners, the duo presents an image at odds with the brutal sincerity with which they expose their deepest desires and fears. Documenting the reality of daily existence through the lens of their unique sensibility, the artists present a poignant and all-embracing vision of life where marginality and isolation, unhappiness and despair, nature and urban beauty are tenderly revealed.
This presentation of large-scale pictures by Gilbert & George traces their stylistic departure from austere black and white and monochromatic compositions of the 1970s to the bolder clashes of images and colors in the 1980s. Constantly aware of the changes in the social and political climate, Gilbert and George address head-on the burning issues of our times--be it social marginality, religion, the AIDS crisis or multiculturalism--while at the same time defining a unique visual language. The quotations that unfold around the gallery space are by Gilbert & George, and their words address the viewer as directly and uncompromisingly as does their art. From the outset of their joint career, Gilbert (British, born 1943) and George (British, born 1942) explored and redefined picture mak... more -

Art in Motion with Action Artist Matt Cheney
Few artists can say they created a painting while free falling from an airplane."
- Dana Ranill of Fuel.tv
Few artists can say they created a painting while free falling from an airplane. For 25-year-old action artist Matt Cheney, it’s all in a day’s work. Though it may seem unconventional, action sports are as much a form of artistic expression as they are competitive sports. And Cheney has further explored the idea of action sports as art by integrating activities like snowboarding, skateboarding and skydiving with oil painting. Here’s how…
Cheney’s action art is inspired by abstract painters like Jackson Pollock and Saburo Murakami who defined action painting during the abstract expressionist movement of the Post WWII era. Intrigued by the performative nature of action painting, Cheney uses various action sports (which he loves) to create the movement behind his work. Working with a crew of several people, Cheney uses video cameras and still photography to document the visual experience of his paintings. “The whole process for how it’s done, from the oil paints to mixing the pigments and thinking about the composition, is free spirited and spontaneous. I love the idea of preserving a moment in time.” For his senior project at the Art Institute of Boston, Cheney built a halfpipe in a studio and created paintings like Pink on Black while skating up and down the halfpipe Few artists can say they created a painting while free falling from an airplane." - Dana Ranill of Fuel.tv ... more
