A million women can't be wrong

Is there a link between wine and breast cancer or not?? We see contradicting articles all the time on this subject, so no wonder there's so much confusion on whether or not you should be enjoying your nightly glass of wine after work. So when a recent study suggested there IS a link between wine and breast cancer, a lot of women shrugged it off as just another one of those reports that add to the confusion. But this study was different. It's the "biggest survey ever conducted into the health and habits of Britain's females, and its findings cannot easily be dismissed."

It's the Million Women Study that's been following the health and habits of 1.3 million women from as far back as 1996. Scientists at Oxford University have collected data on everything from lifestyle to history to health of these women and in effect have created a blue print for women's health. It spotlights all the issues women deal with from the pill, to alcohol, to diet, to childbearing, to the menopause. And whether we like to believe the following points or not, a picture is starting to emerge from this work in progress:

"In broad terms, the implications for women who want to minimise their cancer (and heart disease) risks are as follows:

• Avoid HRT. Women run twice their normal risk of breast cancer while taking the combined form of oestrogen and progestagen (though the extra risk goes away once they stop). Oestrogen alone is not so risky. Both forms of HRT increase the risk of ovarian cancer, although not by as much as they do breast cancer. Oestrogen alone increases the risk of endometrial cancer, which affects the lining of the womb.

• Do not smoke.

• Don't let yourself get overweight. Interestingly, you shouldn't be too thin either. A body mass index (BMI, your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres) of around 24 is good.

• Ideally, don't drink at all.

• Don't worry about taking the pill when you are young. It protects against ovarian cancer.

• Take some exercise. Doing exercise helps you to avoid heart disease, but it doesn't have to be too strenuous.

• Breastfeed for as long as possible. Doing what the breasts were intended for protects against breast cancer. In an ideal, risk-avoiding world, women would also start having babies young and have many more of them, both of which protect against breast cancer."

I'm quite intrigued to find out what else this study will uncover.Is there a link between wine and breast cancer or not?? We see contradicting articles all the time on this subject, so no wonder... more

People WANT wine to be good for them

"60 Minutes recently ran a segment about the health benefits of red wine, specifically the apparently wondrous powers of resveratrol, a polyphenol that is found in the skin of grapes and is thought to prevent illness and promote longevity. This wasn't the first time 60 Minutes has trumpeted the virtues of red wine; in 1991, it called attention to the so-called French Paradox, which posited that the low rate of heart disease in France, despite a national diet gloriously abundant in rich foods, was due to the country's prodigious consumption of red wine. That report not only prompted an outbreak of oenophilia in the United States; it fanned an obsessive interest in the nutritional and therapeutic properties of wine. This seems to be a particularly American fixation, and it raises an intriguing question: Why are we—Americans—so anxious to find justifications for drinking wine beyond the fact that it tastes good and we like it?"

"This combination of lab mice, outlandishly large doses, and extravagant claims recently yielded a very funny piece in The New Yorker, one which zeroed in on an essential point: Red wine may contain resveratrol, but it contains substantially more alcohol. Regardless of how beneficial wine ultimately proves to be for the heart, lungs, groin, and other body parts, we already know it has a powerful and mostly salutary psychological influence. Wine—or, to be more precise, the alcohol in wine—leaves us happy; it is a relaxant, a stimulant, a balm. It can make a bad day good and a good one better."

So my take on all of this is...
people want a justification to get intoxicated. If they think that the minimal amounts of antioxidants they get from wine are enough to reap benefit while their livers and kidneys are suffering, let them.
