Can We Talk About Black Theatre? (And how well will we listen?)
"If a black person produces something such as a play, a film or music should it be associated with the word black?" asks playwright Bola Agbaje, author of Gone Too Far! which returns to the Royal Court in July.
This well-written and researched article examines current trends regarding so-called "black theatre" in Britain. Does labeling a play as "black," "gay," "Muslim," or "radical" help to put them in context? Or does it create a segregation of sorts? And also, how do these subcultures of theatre change our definition of what we concider "mainstream?" "If a black person produces something such as a play, a film or music should it be associated with the word black?" asks playwright Bo... more -
The Alienation of Bertolt Brecht
It seems that once again, literary critics are discounting the genius of Brecht's work. Since Angels in America was produced, more and more plays have embraced the A-effect as an effective story-telling tool. We have Brecht to thank for this, and it is a shame that his contribution to 20th century theatre and our contemporary theatre has been threatened by anti-Communist sentiment. It seems that once again, literary critics are discounting the genius of Brecht's work. Since Angels in America was produced, more an... more

Terminal: The Play by Brian Keene and Roy C. Booth could make American Theatrical ...
Saw this on Brian's website, thought it was neat and wanted to share it.
To quote Brian: "My co-writer, the renowned playwright Roy C. Booth, pointed something out to me tonight. He said, “Should the play sell out, it will be the first such hard cover offering to do so from a recognized press since the play adaptation of Dracula. And you have to go waaaaay back for that one (think Bela Lugosi’s or John Carradine’s stage productions well before the film in 1931.”

A procession of devils, ghosts and zombies through the historic Spanish city of Toledo has been branded blasphemous by the Catholic Church.

He told worshippers the procession, which also included a Virgin Mary and a Saint Peter, made a mockery of the Catholic celebration of Corpus Christi. A procession of devils, ghosts and zombies through the historic Spanish city of Toledo has been branded blasphemous by the Catholic Ch... more -

London Astoria to be demolished
"The Astoria was all about grimy atmosphere. After opening as a cinema in 1927, it was converted to a live performance space in 1976. Since then it has hosted historic gigs by acts such as Nirvana (in 1989), Radiohead (in 1994), as well as countless performances by rising stars and larger acts after a more intimate feel." (The Guardian's Sean Michaels)
The Astoria is to be demolished to make way for the London CrossRail Link that requires redevelopment of Tottenham Court Road Tube Station. The rail link is intended to reduce congestion on the London Underground for travellers crossing the capital.
London Mayor Ken Livingstone said the music venue "wasn't at the cutting edge of modern comfort" and will be replaced with a larger venue as part of the development plans.
Even with 35,000 petition supporters the case has been closed. Barry Hyde of the Futureheads said that "Venues should be dirty, they should be a bit smelly because smelly things happen in venues."
The redevelopment of the Globe Theatre site in 1644 was likely also seen as progress.

CLADDAGH BING! Tony and Tina's Wedding for the Mc in all of us!
Hilarious version of Tony and Tina's Wedding for the Boston set! March 15 at Stadium Bar.
Gino and Gillianne met by victims of circumstance. Gino was born and raised on Prince Street in the North End of Boston and Gillianne on “L” Street in Southie. Gino was a coffee shop lifer until he and his brother Gnicky (the G is silent) got a great idea to hold up a local bank in Downtown Crossing. Gillianne, a college graduate, worked at this local bank as a teller supervisor. When Gino arrived to “deposit” his money, he couldn’t follow the plan due to Gillianne’s beauty! So he asked her out instead!
Gino and Gillianne found themselves hanging out at Castle Island, wandering Fanuil Hall, and rooting for the Red Sox at Fenway Park! All was going picture perfect until Gino went to Gillianne’s house to “meet the parents!” That’s when Gino found out that Gillianne was the daughter of the Southie Cop, Captain Morgan, who patrols the North End. Gino and Captain Morgan have had a history of cat and mouse.
Gino and Gill’s love was too strong for even the Big Dig to keep them apart! Against Captain Morgan’s wishes, Gino and Gillianne have decided to get married and YOU ARE INVITED TO THE WEDDING!
