    • National Guard to recruit 'Rock Stars'

In August, the US Army National Guard will launch a mobile marketing campaign, supported by outreach to local media, to sign up recruits at various music festivals and other outdoor events.

Developed and executed by RedPeg Marketing on behalf of prime contractor Docupak, the "Rock Star Hero Challenge," as the campaign is called, features a tour bus with 52-inch touch screen displays that allow potential recruits to see and participate in virtual missions.

Interactive kiosks where visitors can pose with images of rock bands will sit outside the buses, tying into the musical nature of the events and emphasizing the figurative "rock star" quality of Army National Guard members.

The 12-week tour begins the first weekend in August and will go to about four events per week, with each event expected to last eight to 12 hours and draw 50,000 to 100,000 attendees.

Despite earlier reports of problems meeting recruitment goals since the Iraq war, LTC Joseph Day, chief of the Army National Guard's strategic actions and marketing, said that the National Guard is currently on track to meet its recruiting goal for 2008. Since 2005, it has increased its "end strength" total from 330,000 to 380,000.

RedPeg will manage outreach to local media covering music festivals and sports events like NASCAR races and bass-fishing tournaments.

"Recruiters will know about the events [in advance] and pre-market them," said RedPeg president and CEO Brad Nierenberg. "The events will be a way to engage with consumers who haven't considered the National Guard before now."

Day said that recruiting is typically done on a local, grassroots level, with recruiters attending any large event where its "target demographic" might be found.

"The interactive nature makes the 'Rock Star Hero' different and will appeal to our demographic's thirst for technology," Day said.

    • Jay-Z gets bumped up the charts after Glastonbury

Headlining at Glastonbury has seriously helped Jay-Z's record sales. His 2004 single '99 Problems' looks like it's going to sit comfortably in the Top 25 UK singles chart this weekend, and his duet with Linkin Park is also on its way to the Top 40.

And after opening with Oasis' Wonderwall, he's made Noel Gallagher eat his words. Gallagher had called Jay-Z a "wrong" choice to headline the festival. But now Wonderwall is making a come back on the charts -- What's the Story album has seen a sales increase of 200%. Not so 'wrong' anymore, is he?

    • Seven Stabbed at Reggae Festival Rampage

Seven victims, aged 15 to 30, were stabbed Sunday morning (June 22, 2008) at the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, with one victim requiring a life flight evacuation for a wound to the upper torso, in yet another tragic episode of ‘why drugs are bad’. I called the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital to find out if the victim was ok, but the operator was unable to give me any information. I learned from the message boards that the victim was in stable condition.

Meanwhile, on Friday afternoon (June 20, 2008), lighting had passed through the area, igniting over a hundred blazes that would quickly choke the sky with a thick, unhealthy smoke. The Santa Rosa local paper, the Press Democrat, has good local coverage of the blazes which continue to rage. The air was so bad I slept in my car one night, and it reminded me of the San Diego fires in 2003. The sun was caught behind a smoky veil for the entire day, an orange globe trying to penetrate the haze. It is now hazy over the entire SF bay area. I woke up last night gasping for breath and had to break out my inhaler to help breathe.

For the rest of the story visit the link above.

    • TREASURE ISLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL 2008

Wow. The Treasure Island Music Festival is back (with a vengeance). The Saturday line-up of Justice, TV On the Radio, Hot Chip, Antibalas, Amon Tobin, Aesop Rock, CSS and more is flat out ridiculous (and in my opinion, about as good as it gets). Albeit a little breezy out on the Bay, T.I. is a really dope place to see music and Another Planet did an awesome job with it last year.

And wouldn't you know it, but we've got pods on a few of these awesome artists:
