Can you tell the Nativity story in 30 seconds?
A Christian group has launched a competition to tell the Christmas story in 30 seconds or less. Churches, youth groups and individuals can submit entries in the style of either radio adverts or YouTube videos.
The impetus for the campaign came from a poll last year suggesting only 12% of adults knew the details of the biblical Christmas story. Francis Goodwin, chairman of the network, said: "We hope youngsters will write, text, record, video, paint the Christmas story in under 30 seconds. This campaign and the competition will be a catalyst for churches to get involved all over the country. We hope they will use this to reach out to a new generation that often isn't being brought up with the message of hope embodied in the news of Jesus' birth at the heart of the Christmas story."
The network is offering a prize of £500 for the best entry. A Christian group has launched a competition to tell the Christmas story in 30 seconds or less. Churches, youth groups and individuals... more -
Nine out of ten kids want videogames for Christmas
Following closely from the statistic that most kids in the US spend a sizable chunk of their time playing video games, it perhaps isn't entirely surprising that it is also the most sought-after category of Christmas present. Surveys have shown that nine out of ten kids aged between eight and eleven want something game-related for Christmas. Music games top the list, with Guitar Hero World Tour topping the "want" chart with 17% of kids desiring it. Rock Band II was hot on its heels, followed by perennial favourite Mario Kart, and then Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party II. Postman jailed because Christmas never came
A Scottish postman who ruined Christmas for others was jailed for three months.
Robert Gordon, 31, filled his car boot and garden shed with cards and presents because he felt his postbag had become too heavy. When the Royal Mail investigated complaints about missing items they found he had kept and hidden 3,506 pieces of post. Gordon was also found to have stolen 24 further letters and packages – including one he had pocketed cash from, and another containing a Playstation game.
Gordon pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to intentionally delaying 3,506 postal packets, and stealing a further 24 that were in the course of transmission between 1 April, 2006, and 17 January, 2008. A Scottish postman who ruined Christmas for others was jailed for three months. ... more -
Santa Adds Facebook to Naughty List Over Friend Limit
Santa Claus is upset with Facebook.
Everyone, it seems, wants to be friends with Santa Claus on Facebook. In the month or so since he joined the popular social network, he's approved 5,000 friends. He could have easily gone viral by Thanksgiving -- when everyone wants to be 'friends' with Santa regardless of whether they deserve to be. He could be become the most popular person in the world on Facebook.
But unfortunately for Santa, 5,000 friends is all anyone gets on Facebook. To add anyone new, the man who says his real legal name is Santa Claus must remove someone on his list.
That upsets the man who runs the Santa Claus Foundation, which he describes as an advocacy group for children.
"It's hard for me to believe that Facebook would want to disappoint that many folks who might enjoy being Santa's friends," Claus said in an email. "I'm not selling anything; so, I don't understand the problem."
He wants Facebook to make an exception for him and he's not above thinking about rough tactics, noting a report that Facebook lost users in the United Kingdom earlier this year.
"[I] can only imagine what could happen, should word will get around that it is now severely limiting the number of friends Santa Claus can have," Claus said. "Would this make Facebook the new Scrooge or Grinch?"
Those are harsh words given that Santa already got personal help from Facebook, since the site blocks people from registering names like Darth Vader or the Easter Bunny. But Santa was able to prove he was legally Santa Claus and a tech overrode the ban, making Santa Claus the Santa Claus on Facebook.
Facebook says the 5,000 friend limit applies to all users -- but anyone can make a page where an unlimited number of people can become sign themselves up as fans.
A Facebook tech already helped Santa create a page, but Santa says that having fans is not nearly the same as having friends.
"We hope this minor inconvenience doesn’t impact the otherwise good little boys and girls at Facebook come Christmas," spokesman Barry Schnitt said, adding that he hopes Santa collects as many fans as he can.
Santa isn't the first to reach or complain about the limit -- prominent tech bloggers Robert Scoble and Jason Calcanis have both hit the limits. The limit is intended to keep Facebook resembling how real world social networks work since no one really has 5,000 friends.
There may also be technical reasons that make the limit necessary.
One wonders if Facebook actually does raise the limit just for Santa, how will they say no come spring when the Easter Bunny gets hopping mad about the limit? Santa Claus is upset with Facebook. ... more -

Christmas In July: Drunk Santa Wannabe Busted in His Birthday Suit
This wannabe Santa Claus is getting two lumps of coal this Christmas.
Warren, OH Police arrested 48-year-old Richard Kline for breaking and entering, Thursday morning, after they found him trapped inside the chimney of an historic building, that houses Santa's workshop during the holiday season.
In the course of pulling Kline out, his pants got stuck on the side of the chimney, came off and fell into the fireplace below. When he emerged he was wearing nothing but his birthday suit.
A police spokesman says Kline had just gotten out of jail Wednesday afternoon, after being arrested for trying to break into another house. Apparently that's when he started drinking heavily, and grew tired. So he started looking for somewhere to sleep it off, when he spotted the old log cabin, which dates back to the 1800s'.
A shirtless Kline scaled the roof, and started to climb down the chimney, but only made it about five feet, before getting stuck and crying for help.
When rescuers finally pulled him out, Kline had scratches and bruises on his naked body. Paramedics checked him out at the scene, before officers escorted him back to the same Trumbull County jail cell he had left just hours earlier.
