    • The Cool School

Walter Hopps and Irving Blum's Ferus Gallery was at the center of the art movement in Los Angeles that put the city on the map. With the likes of Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp, LA became a refuge for artists that were considered too unconventional for New York’s traditional style. This cut down narrated by Jeff Bridges comes from the full length documentary "The Cool School" directed by Morgan Neville. • Art in a Can

A blogging site based in Madrid, Spain is calling on artists to use discarded drinking cans to create mini-masterpieces.

The site encourages artists to "Use the can as a blank canvas, express yourself on it, and send it to us. Just follow the specification: Keep the “easy open” for hanging it. The perimeter of the can is the limit. Do not use filled cans, it must be crushed."

Any individual or any group from anywhere in the world can be part of the project. The painted cans will be placed in a digital gallery on paintingcans.com and sold, displayed in a show in Madrid, and also published in a book.

The project is to support the use of mediums such as aluminum cans which are only limited to the brief time of their consumption and then not used again, and to encourage independent art. Whether its green, innovative, or just art; it is different.

You can learn more about the project at paintingcans.blogspot.com.

    • Chop Chop Salon

Chop Chop is a extraordinary hybrid: two parts hair salon, one part art gallery and zero parts pretense.

Located at 830 N. La Brea Avenue in the heart of trendy LA, Chop Chop Salon is a simple mix of chic and grass roots style whose mission is to create color and cuts that befit their client’s personality, taste and lifestyle.

The creative force behind the salon is owner and bay-area native, Darin Birchler who after 18 years of styling hair came up with the concept of integrating an art gallery and hair salon.

The artist, Jorge Oswaldo explains why this collaboration is fresh and how it has affected his career.

Reception for this artist will be at the salon on:
      Saturday, June 28th, 2008

    • Dissent - Rough Cut

Hey guys. Just finished the rough cut and looking for some feedback. Clearly there's some sound work that needs to be done, and I'll need to do a little color correction. I'm going to add music, but I'm still searching for that perfect song, but when that goes in it should pick up the pace of the piece. Any suggestions are welcome. What do want to see more of? What do you want to see less of? Any bites I should lose or visuals that might help to tell the story? Thanks! Hey guys. Just finished the rough cut and looking for some feedback. • Patriotic Woman Banned from Photobucket

Painting the illuminated woman in red, white and blue, I was feeling fiercely patriotic.
Thinking about how sexism is draining support for Hillary Clinton for President like a cut artery. Seeing young idealistic women buying Hillary's platform when it's shortened to 3 word sound bites by a tall younger man who looks presidential in a suit the way a woman never can, I was heartbroken by how people hate smart women.
The banning of this "Patriotic Woman" painting confirms how sexist America and the world is.
Pictures of penis's are ok and lingams like obelisks are the focal point of parks and monuments throughout the world like the Washington Monument and the Obelisk at the Place de la Concorde in Paris, and television is filled with commercials about male erectile disfunction, but "Patriotic Woman" must be deleted?

    • Would you like Jesus on your Tortilla?: Joe Bravo redefines Chicano Art

      excerpt from the article:

"Bravo, 57, admits that he never consciously set out to do anything avant garde. the early 1970s, he was a starving art student at the University of California, Northridge. 'I didn't have the money to buy canvas,' he said in a telephone interview from Los Angeles, where he lives. 'I was looking at some tortillas in my kitchen and was just tripping on the textures.' So Bravo painted five tortillas with Mayan codexes and hung them as a mobile in a school exhibition..."
