NYC: Playing the Building – An Installation by David Byrne 5/31-8/10
Creative Time presents Playing the Building, a 9,000-square-foot, interactive, site-specific installation by renowned artist David Byrne. The artist transforms the interior of the landmark Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan into a massive sound sculpture that all visitors are invited to sit and “play.” The project consists of a retrofitted antique organ, placed in the center of the building's cavernous second-floor gallery, that controls a series of devices attached to its structural features—metal beams, plumbing, electrical conduits, and heating and water pipes. These machines vibrate, strike, and blow across the building’s elements, triggering unique harmonics and producing finely tuned sounds. Scott Walker: The Outsider Sensibility and Creative Visions of Identity
Scott Walker is said to be the world's premier experimental musician, with perhaps no other musician having had a greater influence upon rock music. He was part of a wildly popular English band during the 1960s.
However, he withdrew from public view as his interests turned to more avant-garde music, which he helped revolutionize to major critical success, but only minor public attention. The reclusive Walker has now re-surfaced with a widely acclaimed album (The Drift), his first recoded album in years. In addition, a highly praised documentary about the influential artistic vision of Walker’s experimental musical works has just been produced.
Photographs, two videos from the documentary and a music video of a song from his new album are included. Scott Walker is said to be the world's premier experimental musician, with perhaps no other musician having had a greater influen... more -
