    • Saving Port Gibson

The town of Port Gibson, Mississippi is in need of your help. Declared "too beautiful to burn" by Ulysses S. Grant during the notoriously destructive Vicksburg Campaign of 1863, Port Gibson has become one of the most historically significant towns in the South. Now, a highway expansion project and almost twenty years of indecision and infighting threaten to transform Church Street, a lovely, tree-lined avenue, into a major interstate. Meet a few locals determined to save this national treasure.

Help unite the community around an Eastern bypass!

    • France's Sarkozy Pledges Support for Lebanon's New President

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has pledged support for Lebanon's new president and for efforts to promote national unity, following the country's deadly political crisis.

Sarkozy spoke after arriving in Beirut Saturday for a one-day visit aimed at supporting the country's peace efforts. He said Lebanese President Michel Suleiman has a big responsibility to achieve national reconciliation.

Sarkozy is leading a French delegation that includes Prime Minister Francois Fillon, Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and the leaders of all of France's major political parties.

The delegation is expected to hold talks with Mr. Suleiman and representatives from 14 Lebanese political factions, including the Shi'ite opposition group Hezbollah.

President Sarkozy is the first Western head of state to visit Lebanon-a former French colony- since Mr. Suleiman took office May 25, following an Arab-mediated agreement to end the crisis. Lebanon is trying to recover from recent deadly sectarian violence that nearly resulted in a civil war.

    • Civil War enthusiast killed by 140-year-old cannon ball

Sam White, was restoring a Civil War era cannon ball when it exploded, killing him in his driveway.

More than 140 years after Lee surrendered to Grant, the cannonball was still powerful enough to send a chunk of shrapnel through the front porch of a house a quarter-mile from White's home in Virginia.

This brings the US Civil War casualty count to 700,001.

    • Is a civil war looming in Iraq?

Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sad has threatened to "declare a war" unless the Iraqi government stops its violent assaults against groups such as his Mehdi Army.

"I'm giving the last warning and words to the Iraqi government, they should take the road of peace and drop the violence that they use with their people. Otherwise, they will be like the destructive [Saddam Hussein] government."

Muqtada al-Sad's announcement comes at a time of elevated fighting between Iraqi security forces supported by US troops and Shi'ite factions inside Iraq. Is the situation in Iraq now a great deal worse than any of our politicians dare to let on?

"The Maoist party of former rebels in Nepal has for the first time explicitly claimed victory in the country's national elections, held nine days ago.

The Maoists' leader, Prachanda, said he would head a new government, with the monarchy abolished.

Votes are still being counted - the Maoists are certain to have the most seats but not an overall majority.

The two other big parties have been badly beaten but the Maoists want to include them in a coalition government."

In northern Uganda, a rebel group called the Lord's Resistance Army has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s in what has become Africa's longest civil war. It is estimated that more than 100,000 people have died in the war and thousands of children have been abducted. But in recent years, thousands of rebels have come out of bush to take advantage of amnesty offer by the Ugandan government. Now thousands of former rebels, including some of its top leaders, live side by side with victims. • Bush admin's covert plan kicked off Palestinian civil war

Elliott Abrams rides again! Looks like the Iran-Contra vets convinced Bush to support a bloody-handed Fatah leader in a military move to solidify control of Palestine, but they instead worried Hamas enough that it took over most of the territory and led to the emasculation of Fatah and the PA.

      Quote:
After failing to anticipate Hamas’s victory over Fatah in the 2006 Palestinian election, the White House cooked up yet another scandalously covert and self-defeating Middle East debacle: part Iran-contra, part Bay of Pigs. With confidential documents, corroborated by outraged former and current U.S. officials, David Rose reveals how President Bush, Condoleezza Rice, and Deputy National-Security Adviser Elliott Abrams backed an armed force under Fatah strongman Muhammad Dahlan, touching off a bloody civil war in Gaza and leaving Hamas stronger than ever.

    • Specialty license plates and the Confederate Flag

It's common for Americans to be proud of their heritage, of where they came from, about what their past is about -- be it their family or their region of the country and the world. That pride is displayed every now and again, both consciously and subconsciously.

One of the more divisive displays of pride is the confederate battle flag. For some, it is a symbol of southern heritage. For others, it's a reminder of America at it's worst - at war with itself. Of bigotry and racism that has taken many forms and names since the American Civil war.

One Florida lawmaker is attempting to have a specialty automotive license plate offered to Florida residents. It would join 109 other specialty auto tags that are already available to Floridians (some banal - like state university mascots. Others divisive like a Pro-life plate).

is it a benign symbol of southern pride? Or flaunting a history of hate?
