    • Lawyers ready to defend protesters who land in jail at DNC

Keeping everyone posted on news concerning the DNC from local news sources-

      The Rocky Mountain News-
Free speech rights are personal to Denver criminal defense lawyer Sean McAllister.

During a protest in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, McAllister, 35, was serving as a legal observer.

"The police came out of nowhere and I was karate-chopped in the neck. I have been personally assaulted by the DPD (Denver Police Department)," McAllister said.

He is concerned that First Amendment rights could take a back seat during the Democratic National Convention. That's why McAllister said he helped found the DNC-People's Law Project and will be volunteering his time to help protesters during the convention. The People's Law Project held a training session Friday to focus on protecting civil rights and quickly springing protesters from jail during the convention.

Mayor John Hickenlooper has said that all police on the streets during the convention will have attended training classes to help them defuse violence.

Civil rights lawyer David Lane spoke during the training session where about 60 lawyers learned how they can help defend protesters who tangle with police.

Lane said police reaction to protesters will determine whether rallies are peaceful or violent.

Lane said he witnessed some restraint by Denver police at a recent Columbus Day parade.

But, he said, the brass will set the tone in August. "If police are ill-trained and ill-led, '68 may very well be recreated in Denver," Lane said referring to riots during the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago.

The People's Law Project will provide pro bono attorneys to help jailed protesters during the convention.

The group will also staff a hot line where protesters can call for help and will field teams of neutral legal observers who will attend rallies and videotape protesters' interaction with police.

    • Protesters' proximity at DNC upsets national media

Keeping everyone posted on issues concerning the DNC from local news sources-

      Rocky Mountain News-
Denver's selection of a spot for protesters to congregate during the Democratic National Convention has angered another group - the national media.

Some of the media tents to be erected on the Pepsi Center parking lot will be within a stone's throw of the area the city has designated for protesters.

Members of the media are concerned that loud demonstrations could disrupt broadcasts or that reporters and photographers could be doused with tear gas or pepper spray if there are confrontations between police and protesters.

Andrew Taylor, chair of the Standing Committee of Correspondents, said he is sending a letter to Mayor John Hickenlooper requesting that another site be designated for the demonstrators to congregate, away from the reporters.

The one-acre protest site on the southeast corner of the parking lot, near Seventh Street and Auraria Parkway, will only be about 40 feet south of one of the media tents, Taylor said. A second media tent will sit west of the protest site.

"The media is more sympathetic than virtually any other group for the need to have protesters, to give them a place to speak out," said Taylor, an Associated Press reporter. But then he added:

"We're just basically raising what are really the obvious issues; you're going to have thousands of protesters covering an acre, and it's going to be right next door to two tents, where the print and broadcast media are going to try to do their jobs," Taylor added.

Sue Cobb, the mayor's spokeswoman, acknowledged she spoke with Taylor but said she needed to do more research on the issue before she could comment.

    • Peru mine protesters capture police

Thousands of demonstrators have overpowered riot police sent to break up a week-long blockade in a mining region in southern Peru. People in the town of Moquegua have been blocking roads to demand a greater share of taxes paid by the country's biggest copper producer for their area.

Police fired tear gas at the crowd, put at 20,000, who beat them back and took some 65 officers hostage.

"The situation in Moquegua is no longer under police control. I have wounded here and I am in trouble, so I urge police to draw back," a police chief, Alberto Jordan told the RPP radio station at the height of the violence.

Protesters argue that Peru's economic boom, largely the result of high mineral and commodity prices, is not benefiting them.

    • Protesters attack MTV office in Mumbai, India

MUMBAI, India - Police arrested 70 Sikh protesters after the MTV music channel's office in western India was vandalized over posters showing a Sikh girl massaging a man, officials said Tuesday.

On Monday, protesters smashed windows with rocks, tore banners and damaged furniture in the MTV office in Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment capital, police inspector Raju More said.

The protesters said the posters, which promoted the reality show "On the Job2," offended Sikhs, More said. Sikhs comprise more than 2 percent of India's 1.1 billion people.

Police later released the protesters on bail, he said.

Satish Maneshinde, MTV's attorney in Mumbai, called it an unfortunate incident. He said no one was injured in the attack.

Maneshinde said MTV would consider the protesters' demands to remove the posters.

    • tens of thousands of Spanish truck drivers went on strike to protest high fuel pri...

Nearly half of the gasoline stations in the northern province of Catalonia were out of fuel Tuesday morning, and the regional government sent an emergency convoy of 20 trucks to replenish their tanks.

Three automotive plants - one each operated by Nissan, Mercedes Benz and SEAT - said they were suspending operations because of a lack of spare parts. Vendors warned of shortages in fruit, vegetables and meat at the sprawling wholesale market in Madrid - Mercamadrid - if the strike continued.

Around major cities Tuesday, traffic continued to crawl behind the so-called "snail protests" of slow-moving trucks.

Television news reports showed ships in the Balearic Islands marooned in port for lack of fuel and cargo. In the northern province of Galicia and southern ports of Andalucía, the truckers' strike, coupled with a fishing strike, left docks and fish stalls barren. Wholesale markets were surrounded by protesters. And shoppers were hoarding staples.

So far the administration of Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has offered a package of measures to ease the impact of higher fuel prices on small businesses, including lower social security contributions and subsidies of €55 million, or $87 million, to older truckers who choose to abandon the industry. But Somoza said the truckers considered those measures insufficient. They are seeking government regulations guaranteeing a minimum price for their services, above fuel costs.

The picture is not supposed to go with this link. Sorry about that.

    • Peru Protests intensify

Peruvians have marched in the capital Lima and other cities in defiance at the state of emergency announced by the embattled president last week.

Students, workers and teachers participated, carrying banners, whistles and saucepans.

In Lima, hundreds of helmeted riot police looked on at the protests, which correspondents say could be the biggest since President Alejandro Toledo took power two years ago.

A wave of strikes - some now in their fourth week - has thrust the unpopular president into perhaps his most serious crisis so far.

Workers are demanding wage increases President Toledo promised them during his election campaign, but which he has now agreed with the International Monetary Fund to shelve.

Tanker ships carrying food and fuel had to be sent to Peru's southern regions on Friday because of protest that are not letting up in the region.

    • Protests and strikes over mining in Peru

Laborers and the poor in the Andean country want a larger share of profits that mining companies are reaping from record prices for commodities. President Alan Garcia, whose approval ratings hover near 30 percent, is under pressure to make sure the benefits of a six-year economic boom reach the poor.

Peru is the world's leading silver producer, ranks second in copper and zinc, and fifth in gold, according to government data.

Striking workers at a base metals miner in southern Peru were in talks on Wednesday, aiming to end the walkout that started Tuesday.

"The strike continues, but there are talks going on with the Ministry of Labor," said Luis Castillo, secretary general of Peru's National Federation of Mining, Metallurgy and Steel Workers.

The workers walked out to back various demands.

The Stop the War Coalition has been informed by the Metropolitan Police that a proposed march, co-organised with CND and the British Muslim Initiative, to protest George Bush's visit will not be allowed.

It seems that when George W Bush visits this country traditional rights of assembly are to be removed from the people. This would be unacceptable for the visit of any foreign leader, but for George Bush, a man many regard as a war criminal, it is particularly deplorable.

    • S. Korea girds for protests; cabinet offers to quit

South Korea's entire cabinet offered to resign on Tuesday in the face of massive street protests, as its increasingly unpopular president warned that Asia's fourth-largest economy could be heading into crisis.

The protests against the government, in office barely three months, were sparked by public outcry over a deal to widen its market to U.S. beef imports and have cast a darkening cloud over President Lee Myung-bak's plans for sweeping reform.

"The prime minister offered the cabinet's resignation at the regular meeting this morning (with Lee)," a spokeswoman at the prime minister's office said, in what local media said was in response to the mounting anti-government protests.

    • Winter Soldiers march on

Winter Soldiers are war vets that testify about the horrors of war that they witnessed and participated it. Seattle hosted the northwest regional Winter Soldiers testimony last Saturday, a smaller demonstration than the National testimony in Baltimore, MD in March. National organizers purposefully avoided traditional drum beating protests during the testimony in hopes to attract national "main stream" media attention. Their tactic was largely unsuccessful.

Seattle's testimony, on the other hand, was followed by Iraqi veterans leading the audience in a protest immediately following the testimonies. The march stopped traffic for over an hour in downtown Seattle and drew a large crowd as it passed Seattle's Pike Place Market. Organizers did not just want the audience to passively witness their testimony, they wanted to move the audience to action, the only way the war will eventually end, they believe.

"Dozens of people remain imprisoned for taking part in the 1989 pro-democracy protests centered in Tiananmen Square, but releasing them would improve China's image ahead of the Beijing Olympics this summer, a human rights group said.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said about 130 prisoners are still being held for their role in the demonstrations that were crushed in a brutal military crackdown. The square in the heart of the Chinese capital is expected to feature prominently in media coverage of the Olympics, although authorities worry about the possibility of fresh protests marring the event."

    • Gay rights "abnormal"

It is no secret that Jamaica is one of the most homophobic countries on the planet. It is vary dangerous for gay people to be out in Jamaica. They are regularly harassed, beaten, and even killed. A letter to the editor in today's Jamaica Gleaner News illustrates the ignorant homophobia rampant in Jamaica. Their practice is to include the author's e-mail address. I felt obliged to correct him and his logic. You may feel so inspired.

      He wrote:

"It is my firm belief that there should not even be a debate on the subject on 'gay rights'. Homosexual rights should be no different from any other person's constitutional rights in this country. They should be treated in like manner save and except to promote the 'rights of 'gay'.

What is 'gay rights'? To have a law for same-sex marriage, to say that homosexuality is normal! How can that be! Homosexuality is not normal, it is very abnormal.

The male and female bodies are a perfect fit for pleasure and reproduction. That's the natural law of nature. Why should man go against the natural law? Not even the lower animals have these tendencies.

      What is this 'gayrights' campaign?

So, whether homosexuality stems from a chemical imbalance, a brain malfunction, or plain perversion, it is still abnormal. How can you make that right? So what is this 'gay rights' campaign that is currently taking place all over the globe and now prevalent in Jamaica?

If you are abnormal and are homosexual, keep it to yourself and your partner. Don't flaunt something that is morally wrong and abnormal. We will not stand for it in this country. And so be it, Amen!
