The Victimization of Dalton Trumbo: Political Persecution in America
Dalton Trumbo was a prolific Hollywood screenwriter who wrote dozens of movie scripts during the 1930s and ’40s. In 1947, Trumbo was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) as part of the Hollywood Ten, who were questioned about their ties to the Communist Party. Trumbo refused to testify or divulge the names of others, and was found in contempt of Congress.
Subsequently, he was kicked out of the screenwriter’s guild, and all of the Hollywood motion picture studios almost immediately blacklisted him. For his refusal to testify in the HUAC hearings, Trumbo eventually served nearly a year in federal prison. Dalton Trumbo’s ruination took him from being one of Hollywood’s highest-paid writers to a Hollywood pariah.
After his release from prison, Hollywood kept him on the blacklist for a decade. Nevertheless, he kept writing for films under various pseudonyms. He won an Oscar in 1957 for one of those films, but couldn't pick it up. It is the only unclaimed Oscar in the history of the Academy Awards. Sam Taylor-Wood: A Portrayal of Moments with Crying Men
Sam Taylor-Wood is an English experimental photographer and filmmaker. "Crying Men" is her treatise about sadness. It has very recently been "discovered" in the United States and is attracting considerable attention.
Her series of photographs in "Crying Men" attempts to capture an unusual liminal space, the moment between the real and the unreal, the imitation and the authentic. By her deliberate use of celebrity actors as models, the viewer is led to wonder whether and to what degree their tears of sadness (and therefore their emotions) are genuine.
This article presents great photographs, a photo-gallery of all the "Crying Men" portraits and three videos. The videos include a video-slideshow of the "Crying Men" photographs and Taylor-Wood's short avant-garde film, "Pieta", which stars Robert Downey, Jr. Sam Taylor-Wood is an English experimental photographer and filmmaker. Time Machine: 1860 French song unearthed, first human recording
They say that her voice still sounds sweet and smoky after 147 years, the song floating in the air as if the young lady's walking out of a fog to serenade her audience. "Au Clair de la Lune," in 10 seconds, 11 notes. They've found the first human voice recording ever made, nearly 20 years before Thomas Edison invented the phonograph. But maybe the young lady's warbling doesn't really sound as "sweet and smoky" as they say it does. Take a listen for yourself and you decide!!
Photographs and the short (somewhat painful) music audio are included. They say that her voice still sounds sweet and smoky after 147 years, the song floating in the air as if the young lady's walking out ... more -
Take that Edison! The French claim to have the world's oldest audio recording
An audio historian has stumbled on a static-filled high-pitched trill that could predate Thomas Edison’s 1877 recording of “Mary had a little lamb” as the oldest known recorded human voice. David Giovannoni discovered the extraordinary find while searching for phonautograms, recordings produced by a device invented by Frenchman Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville that created visual recordings of sound waves called phonautographs. The newly-discovered audio is an 1860 French recording of “Au Clair de la Lune” that Giovannoni described as “magical” and “ethereal.”
I personally describe it as "inaudible" and "really effing creepy."

XM-Sirius merger given 'Thumbs up' by Justice Dept
The U.S. Justice Department approved the merger between satellite radio companies Sirius and XM Monday, more than a year after the two companies first announced their deal.
In its decision, the Department of Justice had to determine whether an XM-Sirius merger was anti-competitive, or if other media companies such as Clear Channel (CCU, Fortune 500), CBS (CBS, Fortune 500), or even Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) with its iTunes software and iPod music player served as alternate options for music and media customers.
The Federal Communications Commission must also approve the deal before it can officially be completed. The FCC has yet to make a decision on the deal. The U.S. Justice Department approved the merger between satellite radio companies Sirius and XM Monday, more than a year after the two... more -
