Dutch customs officers have seized 19 tons of marijuana with a street value of 60 million euros ($98 million) on a vessel in the port of Amsterdam.

The ANP news agency quoted authorities as saying the seizure was the biggest of the century.

Police arrested four people on suspicion of drug trafficking.

The unidentified ship was carrying a cargo of walnuts in containers. The drugs were hidden in jute bags in one of the containers.

    • Rejected Red Panda adopted by Cat

A newborn red panda rejected by its mother in Amsterdam's Artis zoo has been adopted by a domestic cat, the zoo said Friday. The cat is nursing the red panda, currently about the size of a kitten, along with her own four kittens, the zoo said.

The red panda was born on June 30 and rejected by its mother soon afterwards. Red pandas look like raccoons and when fully grown are slightly larger than a domestic cat -- substantially smaller than the black and white giant panda.

    • Dutch smoking ban leaves some feeling dazed and confused

Cannabis smokers are feeling dazed and confused after a Dutch smoking law effectively banned tobacco from being used in joints. Millions of people flock to Amsterdam's "coffee shops" every year to legally buy cannabis and hashish over the counter and to smoke it without fear of arrest, as long as they are on the premises.

But the new law bans tobacco inside cafés and restaurants, meaning cannabis users are now forced to light up potent and heady pipes and joints loaded with pure marijuana.

Sophie, a 20-year-old student from Manchester, did not enjoy the experience of smoking neat "skunk", a powerful cannabis hybrid blamed for higher rates of mental illness among some drug users.

    • "No tobacco in your joint" say the Dutch

Customers may smoke only pure cannabis spliffs. The owners claim the law, which will allow customers to light up potent tobacco-free pure cannabis joints but ban milder spliffs in which tobacco is mixed with cannabis, threatens to put hundreds of them out of business.

Wouldn't this be like saying you have to stick to straight spirits?

A commercial network launched in Amsterdam on Tuesday is the first in Europe to use a mobile version of the Wimax standard to allow users to surf the Web at high speeds while on the move, operator Worldmax said.

he broadband wireless network is aimed at competing with telecoms operators KPN, Vodafone, and T-Mobile .

It is similar to using a mobile phone network and differs from networks using earlier Wimax technology which required users to be stationary.

Worldmax, whose investors include Intel and Greenfield Capital, would not reveal financial or subscriber targets.

    • Like sex in public?

Go to Amsterdam, but just don't take your dog with you.

Renowned for its 'liberal' approach to sex and drugs, many see Amsterdam as the sex capital of Europe, but it has come under fresh criticism this week after the city's council has sanctioned a law that will now allow heterosexual and gay couples to have sex in one of the city's most renowned parks, Vondelpark.

The law has come under criticism from an unlikely band of protesters, dog owners, who are outraged that they are to be banned from letting their pet pooches run freely around the park, in case they 'pee on whatever they see.'

One displeased dog owner is quoted as saying "As long as the park has existed, we've been allowed to let our dogs run freely. It's outrageous that we will be punished from now on but public sex won't."

The question I want to know, can dogs still have sex in the park?

    • A New Era of Public Libraries in Amsterdam

While the era of big-box bookstores and amazon.com changed the way people get and browse for their books and media, libraries are not dead. Here in the Netherlands, they are very much alive.

In this video I visit the new crown jewel of all libraries in Amsterdam. It is the largest in Europe; an amazing cultural space with a long list of amenities that are worth checking out, if you ever find yourself in this city.

    • Amsterdam's drug police demand right to keep on smoking cannabis

When it comes to turning a blind eye to cannabis use in Europe's most tolerant city, police in Amsterdam are demanding the right to practise what they preach.

Officers in the capital of the Netherlands are in open revolt against a new code of behaviour that orders them to stop taking drugs in their free time.

The new rules, due to come in on January 1, have upset officers who patrol the city's infamous coffee shops, where cannabis is smoked openly by locals and millions of tourists attracted by Amsterdam's relaxed atmosphere.

    • Who said bananas grow on trees...

A Dutch Island 70 miles north of Amsterdam has been swamped with some unusual Cuban contraband, although it’s not the cigars or rum that first come to mind but rather bananas!

After a stormy few days in the North Sea, it was reported a cargo ship lost at least 6 containers overboard, all containing Cuban bananas destined for Europe.

The Terschelling Island is no stranger to their beaches being littered with the washed up remains of cargo ships crossing the treacherous North Sea, only last year locals saw everything from tennis shoes to aluminium briefcase surf in on the tide. The locals seemed much keener to salvage the trainers and briefcases, with suggestions that the bananas be given to a local zoo for what will no doubt be many a monkey's biggest dream come true!

    • Orangutan prefers blondes... tatted blondes

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Sibu the Orangutan has miffed his Dutch keepers by refusing to mate with females and showing sexual interest only in tattooed human blondes.
Apenheul Primate Park hoped Sibu would become its breeding male when he arrived two years ago, but orangutans aren't his type.
"He chases them, or ignores them, but he doesn't do what he should do," said a spokeswoman for the park.
Instead, Sibu fancies his female keepers, especially blondes. That, the spokeswoman said, was common for orangutans but Sibu has a fetish for tattoos, harking back to a heavily tattooed keeper who reared him.
"Orangutans have special interests in special subjects. Sibu happens to like tattoos," she said.
The park hasn't given up on Sibu, 31. He showed an amorous interest in a female Orangutan while living in England and keepers hope he will find love when reunited with her in a new enclosure in Chester, England.
