Boar War: Wild hog kills hunter near berlin
An enraged and hungry wild boar attacked a hunter, who then bled to death.
In recent months wild boars, whom zoologists consider to be Germany's "most dangerous animal", have expanded their comfort zones with city centers now also falling under their reign of destruction. This year alone, boars chased a pair of policemen onto a balcony in a suburb of Frankfurt, sent a pensioner to the emergency room in Berlin, and broke into a home improvement store before being shot to death at the checkout counter in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Now the stakes are even higher as an unlucky hunter, a married 72-year-old man from Berlin, lost his life when trying to dispatch a wild beast spotted feasting on maize in a cornfield 70 kilometers outside Berlin.
By the time other hunters found the man, he was lying on the ground bleeding heavily from his knee. They called an ambulance but it was too late. The boar warrior had punctured a major artery and the 72-year-old sportsman bled to death. An enraged and hungry wild boar attacked a hunter, who then bled to death. ... more -

Addie get your gun!
"Fannie Mae said it will set aside the loan of a woman who shot herself as sheriff's deputies tried to evict her from her foreclosed home.
Fannie Mae foreclosed on the Akron, Ohio, home of Addie Polk, 90, after acquiring the mortgage in 2007.
Addie Polk, 90, of Akron, Ohio, became a symbol of the nation's home mortgage crisis when she was hospitalized after shooting herself at least twice in the upper body Wednesday afternoon.
On Friday, Fannie Mae spokesman Brian Faith said the mortgage association had decided to halt action against Polk and sign the property "outright" to her.
"We're going to forgive whatever outstanding balance she had on the loan and give her the house," Faith said. "Given the circumstances, we think it's appropriate."
Residents of Akron have rallied behind Polk, who is being treated at Akron General Medical Center. She was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon, according to Akron City Council President Marco Sommerville.
U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, mentioned Polk on the House floor Friday during debate over the latest economic rescue proposal.
"This bill does nothing for the Addie Polks of the world," Kucinich said after telling her story. "This bill fails to address the fact that millions of homeowners are facing foreclosure, are facing the loss of their home. This bill will take care of Wall Street, and the market may go up for a few days, but democracy is going downhill"." Man pleads guilty to motorway murder of Hell's Angel.
At Birmingham crown court yesterday, Sean Creighton, a 44 year old from Coventry, admitted murdering Gerry Tobin. For legal reasons, his plea could not be reported until today.
Creighton had previously denied killing the 35-year-old biker but changed his plea ahead of the trial of six other men accused of killing Tobin near junction 12 of the M40 in August last year.
Tobin, who lived in Mottingham, south-east London, worked as a mechanic at a Harley Davidson garage.
A post-mortem examination found he died from single gunshot wound to the back of his head on the Warwickshire stretch of the motorway, as a he returned from the Bulldog Bash bikers' festival.
Creighton, who also admitted two firearms charges, was remanded in custody yesterday and will be sentenced at the end of the trial, which is expected to last for up to six weeks.
Mr Justice Treacy, who lifted a restriction prohibiting the media from reporting Creighton's pleas, warned jurors not to conduct their own investigations into the killing of Tobin.
Six men also face a charge of possessing a shotgun, while two (Turner and Dane Garside) are further charged with possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life. Inglewood Officers Placed On Leave After Killing Of A Homeless man
Four days after officers fatally shot a homeless man who had a toy gun in his waistband, Inglewood Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks broke her silence on the shooting Thursday, expressing concerns about the officers' tactics and saying she had placed seven of them on administrative leave.
Sunday's shooting of Eddie Felix Franco, 56, was the department's fourth fatal officer-involved shooting in as many months.
Three of those slain by police were unarmed, causing concerns among residents and police activists that officers were using poor judgment when deciding to use deadly force.
Seabrooks has also drawn criticism for failing to provide the public with details about the shooting after it occurred. She defended herself, saying she did not want to release information before it had been verified.
In Franco's case, police said officers opened fire when Franco appeared to reach for a gun in his waistband. The object was actually a realistic-looking toy gun, Seabrooks said. The toy had an orange tip, but it was concealed from the officers' view, she added. 8 Shot, 6 Dead in shooting rampage in Washington
A total of eight people have been shot and six of them have died, including a Skagit County Sheriff's Deputy, during a shooting rampage. The shooting spree has seven different crime scenes, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary in a press conference.
The sheriff's deputy was responding to a disturbance call at about 2:20 p.m. at a house in the 19500 block of Silver Creek Drive. When the sheriff's deputy arrived, one person was already dead in the home, Leary said. Some time went by before the police station called the officer to do a status check. When they received no answer, police responded to the sheriff’s deputy and found him fatally shot in the head, Skagit County police said.
Two construction workers were found fatally shot at a nearby home under construction. A fourth fatality was found at another home in the same area, Leary said.
At some point, a customer at a Shell gas station in Alger was also shot in the arm. A clerk at the gas station told KIRO 7 that she was in the cooler when she heard commotion outside the station. The clerk said a man was firing his gun and hit a customer.
A high-speed pursuit ensued southbound on Interstate 5 near Mount Vernon shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday. Around mile marker 238, a motorist who was pulled over on the shoulder was also shot and killed, Leary said.
In the same area, a Washington State Patrol trooper was shot in the arm. The trooper was taken to Sedro-Woolley Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The pursuit ended when the suspect drove to Mount Vernon precinct of the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office and surrendered, Leary said. A bullet hole was found in the passenger side window of the suspect's truck, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Colleges confront campus shootings with survival training
Hundreds of colleges across the nation have purchased a training program that teaches professors and students not to take campus threats lying down but to fight back with any “improvised weapon,” from a backpack to a laptop computer.
Hundreds of colleges across the nation have purchased a training program that teaches professors and students not to take campus threats lying down but to fight back with any "improvised weapon," from a backpack to a laptop computer.
The program — which includes a video showing a gunman opening fire in a packed classroom — urges them to be ready to respond to a shooter by taking advantage of the inherent strength in numbers.
It reflects a new response at colleges and universities where grisly memories of the campus shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University are still fresh.
"Look at your environment through the lens of survival," said Domenick Brouillette, who administered the course at Metropolitan Community College, which serves more than 20,000 students. "Survivors prepare themselves both mentally and emotionally to do what it takes. It might involve life-threatening risk. You may do something you never thought you were capable of doing."
Nearly 300 professors at Metropolitan Community College were shown the video as part of a training exercise before the first day of classes on this downtown campus. The training, produced by the Center for Personal Protection and Safety, a for-profit firm based in Spokane, Wash., is also available for the school's students.
The training drills teachers and students in a "survival mindset," said Randy Spivey, a former U.S. Department of Defense hostage negotiator who is executive director of the center. The center's roster includes retired FBI agents and others with federal law enforcement experience.
"There are two extremes. On the one hand is paranoia, and on the other is oblivion," he said. "We're just trying to get people to keep this on their radar."
The training discourages cowering in a corner or huddling together in fear, Brouillette emphasized at the Kansas City session.
Instead, Metropolitan Community College faculty members were taught to be aware of their surroundings and to think of common classroom objects — such as laptops and backpacks — as "improvised weapons."
The program has been bought by nearly 500 colleges, which tailor the company's safety messages — laid out in instructional videos and other training guides — to craft localized violence prevention programs. Spivey expects that by year's end that number will have grown to about 1,000 schools.
Schools may provide the training to students as well as staff, as at Metropolitan, or limit it to instructors or security personnel.
Campus safety experts interviewed by The Associated Press said they are not aware of any similar survival training courses marketed specifically to college campuses. Hundreds of colleges across the nation have purchased a training program that teaches professors and students not to take campus threa... more -
Woman shot in the head survives to call 911
Tapes released Monday give an idea of what it might have been like for a Manning woman who was shot in the head and still managed to call 911.
Heather Brammer is in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the base of her skull. Police Chief Randy Garrett says had the bullet hit anywhere else, it would have killed her.
Police say she was shot while working at the City Laundry and Cleaners in Manning in the middle of the day Friday.
Garrett also said Heather told him the man had come into the store around 10am saying he wanted to rent a tuxedo. She showed him the selection and even took a deposit -- then, the chief said he came back an hour and a half later and robbed her.
Investigators say the man took cash from the register, fired a second shot that hit a clothing rack and then made Heather go to the back where he shot her execution style.
Dispatcher: Is he out of the building now?
Heather: Yes, he's gone. He shot me in the back of the head.
Dispatcher: You're shot in the back of the head?
Heather: It feels like my neck or my head. My head's killing me.
Dispatcher: She was shot in the neck.
Heather: I can't see right.
The chief believes it was the robber's intention to kill Heather and that when he left, he thought she was dead. But Heather held on talking to the dispatcher for two whole minutes waiting for paramedics.
Dispatcher: Do you hear them?
Heather: No!
Dispatcher: Do you hear them? I hear them -- they're coming -- EMS is gonna be walking in the door in just a sec, OK?
Heather: OK!
Heather is in the hospital. She is improving, but not out of the woods.
Police do not believe it was the robber's first crime and worry it will not be his last. Heather also told 911 that the man who shot her took off in a green Mitsubishi Galant. As of Monday, he's still on the run. Tapes released Monday give an idea of what it might have been like for a Manning woman who was shot in the head and still managed to c... more -

US school triggers outrage by letting teachers carry guns - Scotsman.com News
ACROSS the globe teachers are struggling to keep dangerous weapons out of classrooms. But now a tiny Texas district has sparked outrage by allowing teachers to bring handguns to school.
While the move has been welcomed by America's gun lobby it has been widely condemned by teaching groups and parenADVERTISEMENTts.
The 110-student campus will be the first in the world to allow teachers to carry guns while working.
David Thweatt, Harrold's superintendent, said the school board unanimously passed the policy in a bid to safeguard pupils in the event of an armed intruder entering classrooms.
School board member Sarah Winkler, vice-president of the Texas Association of School Board, said she was horrified and claimed she was unaware that school trustees could overturn the law.
"This is just appalling," she said. "One accident and I don't know how the school board would live with themselves. Individual school boards should not the type of power to be able to do this."
Gayle Fallom, president of the Houston Federation of Teachers, was equally outraged, and said: "This is a disaster waiting to happen. It is right up there with the worst ideas in the history of modern education."
Fallon said that if the policy was adopted elsewhere it could lead to students stealing their teachers' firearms.
"We could end up arming half the gangs in Houston," she said. "This is the type of decision that makes Texas a laughing stock both nationally and internationally." Arkansas Democratic chairman killed in shooting
The chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party died Wednesday, hours after a shooting at the party's headquarters, police said.
Chairman Bill Gwatney died at 3:59 Wednesday afternoon after a gunman entered his Little Rock office and shot him several times in the upper body, Little Rock Police Lt. Terry Hastings said.
Authorities confirmed the news shortly after former President Clinton and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton released a statement expressing their condolences.
"We are deeply saddened by the news that Bill Gwatney has passed away," the former governor and first lady of Arkansas said. "His leadership and commitment to Arkansas and this country have always inspired us and those who had the opportunity to know him."
The shooting suspect, a white male, also died Wednesday afternoon after a police chase ended in gunfire, Hastings said.
Authorities are working to confirm his identity, but Hastings said there was no indication that he was a former employee. He said police were investigating for possible motives, as well as why the suspect went into the Arkansas Baptist State Convention brandishing a gun.

Israeli officer held over killing
Israel has placed a border policeman under house arrest over his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of a Palestinian boy in the West Bank.
Police said the officer would be held for five days during the inquiry into the incident last week. Twelve-year-old Ahmed Musa was shot dead in Nilin, west of Ramallah, during a protest against the barrier Israel is building in the West Bank. Palestinian officials said he had been shot with a live bullet at close range. Israeli police began investigating the incident after an initial inquiry by the military and border police found that the boy had been killed by Israeli security forces who opened fire to disperse the crowd of protesters. Eyewitnesses said Ahmed Musa was among a group watching Israeli bulldozers at work on the barrier, Israeli media reported.
The planned route for Israel's barrier threatens to separate Nilin from hundreds of hectares of olive groves. In addition, the Israeli army is replacing the main access road to the village with a tunnel under military control. Daily demonstrations there frequently turn into clashes between residents and Israeli soldiers and border police, who usually use tear gas and rubber-coated bullets rather than live ammunition. Israeli officials said they would deploy anti-riot units at Nilin in future to deal with the protests. Israel says the half-built barrier, projected to stretch for 723km (454 miles) around and within the West Bank, is needed for security. Palestinians say it is intended to grab large parts of the West Bank, which was occupied by Israel in the 1967 war.
