Clifford Stoll on... a little bit of everything.
Cliff Stoll, author of the 1990 KGB cyber-spy-busting true-story "The Cuckoo's Egg", talks at TED about, well, a little bit of everything. Why he shouldn't predict the future, why your kids' Kindergarten teacher might be the best futurist, and the latest developments in his zero-volume Klein bottles. SF: Arse Elektronika 2008 @Fort Mason Center 9/25-9/28
Taking up where the successful conference in autumn 2007 left off, this year's Arse Elektronika stands under the motto "future" -- and the ways in which the present sees itself reflected in it. Maintaining a broadened perspective on technical development and technology while also putting special emphasis on its social implementation, this year's conference focuses on Science and Social Fiction.
The genre of the "fantastic" is especially well suited to the investigation of the touchy area of sexuality and pornography: actual and assumed developments are frequently depicted positively and approvingly, but just as often with dystopian admonishment. Here the classic, and continuingly valid, themes of modernism represent a clear link between the two aspects: questions of science, research and technologization are of interest, as is the complex surrounding urbanism, artificiality and control (or the loss of control). Depictions of the future, irregardless of the form they take, always address the present as well. Imaginations of the fantastic and the nightmarish give rise to a thematic overlapping of the exotic, the alienating and, of course, the pornographic/sexual as well.
In order to intelligently contextualize the abundance of queries that are involved here, this year's conference will be structured around three day-long discussion panels, each devoted to a specific theme. The impossibility of fitting many of these issues and relationships into such neat categorizations is not only accepted, but also encouraged. Taking up where the successful conference in autumn 2007 left off, this year's Arse Elektronika stands under the motto "futu... more -

Precipitating Global Unification & Integration Via "The EU-US Merger Proj...
The "timely" solution that i propose (i.e. my very own personal contribution to humanity) to solving many if not ALL of the worlds major problems including war, corruption, global warning, poverty... lies in what i call the "Ultimate Power Move," merging the 2 most powerful governments on the planet, the EU & the US. Precipitaing or more accurately quickening the "already-in-motion" Global Unification & Integration process, to make life easier & better for everyone on the planet, is the overall goal (which includes saving humanity from complete annihilation & destruction of course). Merging the EU with the US will obviously "check" all aberrant countries/nations (North Korea, Syria, Iran...) from doing things they shouldn't otherwise be doing, included in the mix of being checked will be the US & the EU of course. After merging the EU & the US other countries can then be "systematically integrated" as well if they so choose. The "button-up" approach of the "North American Union", that is the US merging with Canada & Mexico, is childs play & essentally "less relevant" compared to the "top-down" approach of an EU-US Merger. The one VERY important caveat/requirement to having a "fully united & fully integrated planet" is having the "right people" on top, unenlightened heartless half-wits will not only "not do" but they will worsen the already f---ed up & despicable condition of humanity & planet earth & obvioulsy that's a no no. So those impressed with and interested in bankrolling and/or contributing in other ways (i.e. ideas, media attention...) to my Global Business Venture you may contact me here or on my myspace. Thanks, Leo (a.k.a. "The Good Borg")

Geek chic: Raf Simons
Belgian intellect and electro fan Simons brings his passion for art, culture, and futurism to his fashion collections, which, although wearable, have something of the art gallery to them. He has not been afraid to reference global politics in his work. A 2001 show called Sometimes You Have to Fight for Your Freedom 'referenced anti-globalism and eco-terrorism'. His shows have been described as 'eerie' and 'otherworldly', but have made a sneaking impact on what hip, with-it, bright young things are wearing all over Europe. The Guardian pays him a visit at his new show, where models prance 'in navy minis, voluminous jumpsuits, dresses of smoky grey tulle and shoes which look as if they're covered in elf scaffolding or something equally otherworldly'. Simons 'has curated exhibitions at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, and collaborated with photographer David Sims on a book project'. This man can actually predict the future!
...Bueno de Mesquita has big ideas, and he's more than happy to put his career on the line for them. Back in March 2004, when al-Qaeda bombed a Madrid train station, influencing the course of Spain's general election three days later, a lot of U.S. security folks were nervous. Worried that al-Qaeda might try something similar here in the run-up to the November, 2004, presidential elections, the Pentagon hired Bueno de Mesquita to run some data through his forecasting model to tell them what to expect. The results were unequivocal. "I said there would be no homeland attack. I also indicated that bin Laden's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, would resurface around Thanksgiving, 2004," he says. Just after the elections in November that year, Zawahiri released a new videotape. Bueno de Mesquita was right on both counts. "One of the things government needs most is advice that's not wishy-washy. I try to be as precise as I can." ...Bueno de Mesquita has big ideas, and he's more than happy to put his career on the line for them. Back in March 2004, when al-... more
