First flush of love not emotional
This is an oldie, but goodie.
When you first fall in love, you are not experiencing an emotion, but a motivation or drive, new brain scanning studies have shown.
The early stages of a romantic relationship spark activity in dopamine-rich brain regions associated with motivation and reward. The more intense the relationship is, the greater the activity.
The regions associated with emotion, such as the insular cortex and parts of the anterior cingulate cortex, are not activated until the more mature phases of a relationship, says Helen Fisher, an anthropologist from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Fisher and colleagues recruited seven male and 10 female volunteers who claimed to be madly in love. They asked them to look at pictures of either their loved one or another familiar person while inside a functional MRI scanner.
Eating chocolate
Early on in a relationship, the images showed that the brain seems to be very focused on planning and pursuit of pleasurable reward, says Fisher, mediated by regions called the right caudate nucleus and right ventral tegmentum. The same regions become active when a person enjoys the pleasure of eating chocolate, she adds.
There are also patterns that resemble aspects of obsessive compulsive disorder. "Activity in one particular area of the anterior cingulate cortex is in common," says Lucy Brown, a neuroscientist from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, who was part of the research team. "The activity is correlated with the length of a relationship, lasting just into the emotional stage."
There are some differences between love-struck men and women, says Fisher. Women in love show more emotional activity earlier on in a relationship. They also seem to quiz their memory regions as they look at pictures of their partner, perhaps paying more attention to their past experience with them.
For men, perhaps unsurprisingly, love looks a little more like lust, with extra activity in visual areas that mediate sexual arousal.
The team has since moved on to examining the final phase of romance. "We are now looking at people who have just been rejected," says Fisher. The research was presented at the Society for Neuroscience's meeting in New Orleans on Tuesday. This is an oldie, but goodie. ... more -

Teen date website faces criticism
A Newsbeat investigation has uncovered a dating website specifically for teenagers which campaigners fear will become a "playground for paedophiles". Children's Charity, NSPCC, says MyLOL.net, which is marketed for teenagers but has hundreds of adult profiles, should clean up its act or be shut down. The site's owner claims there are security measures in place and they'll be toughened up soon. The front page of the site shows a picture of a female in her underwear, who is its most popular member. It has 17,000 members worldwide and if you put teen dating into Google, it comes up first in the search. It has almost 1,700 members in the UK, a quarter of which are under-16. Many of them are pictured in swimwear or underwear. It also has more than 150 male members who are listed as older than 40.

She's just not that into you -- or is she?
When it comes to women, says Mark Tardif, 44, sometimes it's hard to tell what they're thinking. Last year, the college administrator from Waterville, Maine, met an attractive woman at a conference and was having a great conversation over a glass of wine.
Then something unexpected happened: "She undid the plastic clasp holding her hair in a bun, letting her blond hair fall, then flipped it side to side."
Tardif was confused. Could it really be a sign of interest, he thought? No, he finally decided. "I told myself to get real and put it aside," he says.
And so when the evening was over, there was no lingering, just a polite good night.
"She stood there silent, glass of wine in her hands, with a look of puzzlement on her face," he recalls. "As the doors closed, it hit me like a ton of bricks that she was shocked that I hadn't followed her back to her room. The next day was awkward between us."
According to researchers at Indiana University and Yale University, Tardif isn't the only man flying blind. Women are better than men at interpreting facial expressions and body language, at least when it comes to images of women, according to a study published in the April issue of the journal "Psychological Science."
In the study, researchers tested 280 heterosexual male and female students at Indiana University in 2006 and 2007, asking them to sort 280 photos of women (all pictures were full-length shots of fully clothed subjects) into one of one of four categories -- friendly, sexually interested, sad or rejecting.
Men who viewed images of women misidentified 12 percent of the images as sexually interested, the study found, while women mistook 8.7 percent of images.
Researchers chalk it up to women's more developed ability to read others' signals, and men's tendency to oversexualize social situations or miss the message entirely.

Women 'can't have casual sex like men': Daily Mail joins the women-bashing
Lock up your daughters, sisters, mums and mates! Casual sex can finally be revealed in all it's destructive glory by (wait for it...) The Daily Mail. Women, be warned.
Last week a report was unveiled that claimed women 'feel bad' after casual sex and are emotionally damaged by one-night stands, so they'd damn well better stop doing it. http://www.metro.co.uk/metrosexual/article.html?in_arti...
And now the Daily Mail has wheeled out some poor damaged girls to share their sob stories, and ram that moral lesson a little further down our throats. That's right people: the DM has Proved The Scientists Right.
One of the Mail's doe-eyed victims of the sexual revolution was apparently left feeling "worthless" and "emotionally destroyed" after a one-night stand, but it's ok, cos she understands now that men and women are *just different* and she's taken a vow of celibacy as a result.
And - how convenient! - the researcher cites basic, evolutionary biology as the reason that women just can't handle a one-nighter.
The DM can confirm that - lucky old things! - men are no more than their basic biological impulse to get down and dirty with anything that moves in order to spread their seed while women are better suited to... Well, staying at home, taking care of the kids, enjoying the odd monogamous shag when him indoors fancies meting it out, and seeming more attractive to said promiscuous male as a result.
Now, I *know* the Daily Mail's advice is in my best interests, but I just can't get my head around the idea (perhaps I need to think about it over the ironing) that because I'm a woman I'll naturally respond like the 'majority' of women to a one night stand (and 58% isn't much of a majority). Perhaps it's buried in my subconscious and I'm just too irrational to recognise it but, unless I'm confusing myself, I don't recall having responded to many experiences like *every other woman* in the world, just as I can't quite remember having responded to any given scenario like every other brunette, or every other bisexual woman, or every other deaf person.
The Mail's totally unbiased reporting tips the balance in this argument though - not only will putting it about with a number of 'Mr Wrongs' make you feel like crap, but it'll decrease your chances of ever meeting 'Mr Right' too! It's clearly not worth the risk. Thank you Daily Mail, for showing me the error of my ways.
Now where's that chastity belt... Oh yes. It's in the BIN. Along with any copies of the Daily Mail ever to have existed.

He is younger than me, but we are dating!
How important is age in a relationship? If a woman is independent, successful and financially settled is it wrong for her to date a younger man? The only thing that should matter is the mutual understanding between the two.
Hollywood celebrity couples like Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher; Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins; Madonna and Guy Ritchie, and our very own Bollywood couple, Ashwariya Rai and Abhisekh Bachchan — what is so common between all of them?
Yes, the gentlemen are all married to older women. The age difference in some could be greater than the others, but the fact still remains that women are now opting for men, who are much younger to them.
The trend had been set much earlier, but the number is growing further now.
Usually, it was noted that women, who have reached their mid- thirties and early forties prefer younger men. The reasons could be numerous.
* Like Anita prefers a man who can look after her kids, when she leaves for work. Thus proving that women are also on a look out for a less career-oriented man.
* Again with the advance in medical research, women can now look beautiful at any age. Thus, burying the fear that wrinkles could take away all the fun.
* Women, who have had a divorce could be back looking for fun, leaving behind the fear of being left alone.
But now the trend is catching up among young women too. Many of my friends, in their mid-twenties, who have moved into a more stable job, prefer dating younger men.
What could be the reason for this change of taste?
Possibly women in the metros (cities) are more career orientated. They are aware of what they need and how to get it. Besides, older men look towards settling down in the early phase of the relationship itself, thus building boundaries around the lady already. The poor girl is left with no choice but either to marry him or simply walk out.
“Women are more financially independent today. They like to earn and be able to satisfy their own demands,” said Shruti, fashion designer.
Another thing is that women want to be more in control of their life rather then be ruled. Many women, who are successful in their careers have a place of their own and are the sole bread earners of their family. They are ready to carry the load on their shoulders.
Not just that, even younger men find older women more interesting, experimental, fun to talk to, financially settled and more adept sexually. Dinesh, who has been dating an older women for the past two years, says that unlike girls of his own age older women are more mature and don’t crib. How important is age in a relationship?
