"Ero innamorato dell’Italia ancor prima di conoscerne l’esistenza. L’ho capito al nostro arrivo in questo Paese.

Eravamo italiani che non sapevano vestirsi bene. Il nostro era un temperamento latino: furiosi di fronte a un’ingiustizia, amanti della vita, del buon cibo, del bere, dell’amicizia e della famiglia. Anche noi avevamo un rapporto insolito con il concetto di religione. A volte insofferenti del suo conservatorismo, ma spesso sostenuti dai suoi valori fondamentali di fede, speranza e amore. Eravamo stupiti davanti all’ingegno italiano, da Leonardo Da Vinci a Marconi, dai film di Fellini al futurismo, dalla Ferrari e la Fiat ad Armani e Diesel.

Alzarmi presto al mattino per scoprire i fantasmi e le vestigia di Torino e poi vedere allestire le vetrine dei negozi a Milano... a Roma, non cercare di capire perché Keats avesse scelto come epitaffio: «Qui giace colui le cui parole furono scritte sull’acqua». Fare visita anche alla tomba di Shelley e osservare il suo epitaffio: «Cogli l’attimo». Ed è proprio questa l’energia italiana: cogliere l’attimo.

Il Papa si prova i miei occhiali mentre parliamo della cancellazione del debito... Poi il 2001. Tra i densi gas lacrimogeni, nelle strade turbolente del G8 a Genova, a marciare con Jovanotti per la cancellazione del debito e per ottenere maggiori risorse per i Paesi più poveri. Avanti veloce, arriviamo al presente: in Africa 34 milioni di bambini in più vanno a scuola perché la gente del mondo intero è scesa in strada. In Africa 3 milioni di persone vengono curate con farmaci salvavita da quando l’anno scorso, a Genova, è stato creato il Fondo globale per la lotta all’Aids, alla tubercolosi e alla malaria.

Mentre mi preparo al privilegio di esibirmi allo stadio di San Siro questa settimana, di nuovo la lirica invade la mia mente. Ricordi di Pavarotti... il microfono ai piedi del suo letto a Modena. Lui che prende tempo e si decide a cantare Miss Sarajevo insieme a me solo dopo aver mangiato, dormito e, dall’espressione sul suo viso, baciato appassionatamente Nicoletta! La sua voce tonante, che sputa fuoco come un vulcano in eruzione. Un vulcano che ha aperto uno squarcio nel cielo e nel mio cuore, e nel cuore di chiunque l’abbia mai sentito cantare. Grande talento interpretativo... e anche seduttore, artista, amante, marito, padre, amico, bambino e uomo.

Hostilities evident in Muslim area where missionaries were slain.

This article reminded me that it's not always about the actual act of killing but also about attacking the "family unit" which can prevent a society from evolving into one that is built on life-sustaining principles. It also makes me appreciate the missionaries out there that we rarely hear about, who are sacrificing so much on behalf of other people who can rely on them in times of need.

UGANDA: THREATS, EXPULSIONS FOR CHRISTIAN COUPLE

Hostilities evident in Muslim area where missionaries were slain.

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 26 (Compass Direct News) – When a young Muslim woman in northern Uganda heard about Jesus in February 2005 and began having dreams about the cross of Christ, it marked the beginning of a nightmare. Between the dreams and otherwise sleepless nights, Aleti Samusa of Yumbe district soon converted to Christianity; her family immediately kicked her out of their home.

Economically devastated and deprived of that which is most valued in the communal culture, Samusa sought refuge in a local church in Lotongo village. There she found the man she would marry later that year, David Edema, who was raised a Christian but who began sharing in the sufferings of a convert from Islam by becoming one flesh with one. His bride’s family did not attend the couple’s wedding, Edema told Compass, and it wasn’t long before her relatives threatened to break up their marriage.

With Samusa’s family threatening to forcibly take her from Edema, the couple fled Lotongo village to Yumbe town. Their troubles had just begun. “The Muslims started sending people, saying that I am not wanted in Yumbe town and that I should l leave the town,” Edema said.

Note: Christians don't "convert" someone else by force and whenever the Church attempted to do this in the past, it was wrong b/c it was not "what Jesus would do". The "process" of Conversion within Christianity begins when a person chooses to put their faith in Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit begins to transform their heart. Thus, a "conversion" takes place within the person's "inner being". The theological name for this "process" is "sanctification". You can read more about this here if you're interested:

World condemns suicide car bombings in Somalia

The international community has condemned the killing of Somalia's National Security Minister, Omar Hashi Aden, in a suicide car bomb in Beletweyne, north of the capital Mogadishu on Thursday.

In a joint statement the UN, the African Union (AU), the European Union (EU), the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the League of Arab States (LAS) condemned this week's upsurge in violence in Mogadishu, where another suicide bomb or shelling is reported to have killed at least ten people attending a mosque.

They called on the transitional federal government of Somalia not to be deterred in its pursuit for peace by the actions of a small minority.

"This deplorable attack once again demonstrates that the extremists will stop at nothing in their desperate attempt to seize power from the legitimate Government of Somalia by force," the organizations said in a joint statement received here Friday.

"These extremists, both Somali and foreigners, failed in their recent coup d'état but are continuing their indiscriminate violence. They are a threat not only to the country, but to the IGAD region and the international community," the statement said.

The organizations urged the Somali government not to be deterred by the violent crimes of a small minority and to continue its efforts for peace and reconciliation through the Djibouti Process.

It was the UN-facilitated Djibouti process which aided the formation of a new Government of National Unity in February, as well as the creation of a newly-expanded Parliament and election of President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

The Thursday's attack in Beledweyne, which is north of the capital, Mogadishu, is the latest in a new wave of violence that began in early May between government troops and the opposition Al-Shabaab and Hesbul Islam groups.

"The AU, IGAD, LAS and UN sent their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Minister Hashi and the other victims of this cowardly suicide bombing as well as to the government and the people of Somalia," the statement said.

"We pledge our full support to the government particularly at this critical time and call for all Somalis to rally behind their government and all those who are working for peace and stability. We also call on the international community to put its firm support behind Somalia's legal and legitimate government."

Also voicing his concern about the upsurge in violence is the independent UN expert on the situation of human rights in Somalia, Shamsul Bari, who stressed that the fighting must stop immediately and that perpetrators be held to account.
