    • Body of missing Brazil 'balloon priest' found at sea

The body of a Brazilian priest who tried to break a record for flying suspended by helium balloons was found in the Atlantic Ocean near Rio de Janeiro more than two months after he disappeared.
      http://current.com/items/88914958_priest_is_carried_awa...

After rising as high as 20,000 feet soon after takeoff, he was blown backward out to sea where pieces of some of the dozens of balloons he used to lift himself into the air were later found.

After he called for help from port authorities in Paranagua, a search was launched but he was never heard from again. His body was found about 700 kilometers (435 miles) northeast of where he went missing on April 20.

Jonathan dos Santos Alves, 18, had been lost in the forest since mid-May, when he became separated from two friends he was hunting with in an area 72 miles north of the city of Manaus.

Fire and rescue department chief Antonio Dias dos Santos told Reuters he had been missing for 42 days.

    • Brazil: A Latin American Nation?

There has never been any contestation that Brazil is somewhat unique amongst the assemblage of Latin American states:

      • It’s Portuguese heritage
      • It’s ability to remain united – rather than splinter into numerous squabbling territories, as happened with the Spanish empire
      • It’s sheer size – population, economy, territory is as large as that of all the other South American countries put together.

So the differences between Brazil and the rest of the Latin American nations are obvious. However, it would be impossible to see Brazil as anything else but an integral part of any study of Latin America?

Well so we thought... Leslie Bethell of Oxford University gave a talk the other week at the Institute for the Study of the Americas entitled “Is Brazil part of Latin America?” Well he would say that given that he was director of the Centre for Brazilian Studies - when it is normally commonplace just to lump Brazil in under Latin America.

The Piraha tribe are truly unique in their approach to life. They have no mythology. Can't count past 2. No base words for colors(red would be "blood like" or something similar.). Don't link up pronouns(We can say: “I saw the dog that was down by the river get bitten by a snake,” They would have to say, ‘I saw the dog. The dog was at the beach. A snake bit the dog.’) Have a very zen attitude towards existence and my favorite is anyone who can't speak the Piraha language they say is talking in "crooked head". • MIT-led team finds language without numbers

An Amazonian language with only 300 speakers has no word to express the concept of "one" or any other specific number, according to a new study from an MIT-led team.

The team, led by MIT professor of brain and cognitive sciences Edward Gibson, found that members of the Piraha tribe in remote northwestern Brazil use language to express relative quantities such as "some" and "more," but not precise numbers.

It is often assumed that counting is an innate part of human cognition, said Gibson, "but here is a group that does not count. They could learn, but it's not useful in their culture, so they've never picked it up."

The study, which appeared in the June 10 online edition of the journal Cognition, offers evidence that number words are a concept invented by human cultures as they are needed, and not an inherent part of language, Gibson said.

The work builds on a study published in 2004, which found that the Piraha had words to express the quantities "one," "two," and "many." The MIT researchers observed the same phenomenon when they asked Piraha speakers to describe sets of objects as they were added, from one to 10.

As many as 10 people were reported to have been involved in the robbery, but Pele was unhurt in the incident. Pele, who is said to have remained calm during the robbery, apparently believed the men were high on drugs.

He was on his way from the city of Sao Paulo to a house he owns on the coast when the robbery happened at the entrance of a tunnel.

    • Brazil OKs embryonic stem cell research

Brazil's Supreme Court has passed an unprecedented ruling to allow scientists to conduct embryonic stem cell research, which may hold the key to curing Parkinson's disease and diabetes. Advocates say the top court's ruling could make the nation a leader in the field.

The decision is likely to receive condemnation from Brazil's Roman Catholic Church, which has slammed embryonic stem cell research, saying life begins at conception and that by destroying the embryo scientists destroy human life.

    • New satellite photos show Amazon deforestation exploding

New satellite photographs show that the destruction of Brazil's fragile Amazon rainforest has exploded this year, fueling fears that the government's efforts to stop deforestation have been fruitless.

Brazil's DETER real-time monitoring system found that more than 430 square miles of forest, an area a bit smaller than the city of Los Angeles, vanished in the month of April, while about 2,300 square miles, larger than the state of Delaware, were destroyed between last August and April.

That nine-month total surpassed the entire acreage in the Amazon that was destroyed over the previous 12 months, according to DETER data. What's worse, the satellites couldn't see about half of the forest in April due to cloud cover, suggesting that actual deforestation likely was much greater.

That's raised red flags among environmentalists, who say that soybean farming, cattle production and illegal logging are destroying the world's largest rainforest despite the government's attempts to halt the deforestation.

Chopping down and burning the rainforest releases tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contributing to global climate change. Brazil is the world's fourth-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, largely because of deforestation, according to the U.S.-based World Resources Institute.

Worse is yet to come, environmentalists said.

    • Brazil to impose sanctions on US

Brazil will seek sanctions against US after winning a World Trade Organization ruling on cotton subsidies, Brazilian trade official says.

Roberto Azevedo, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry's trade chief, said on Tuesday that Brazil will impose sanctions against the US, leaving it to the WTO to decide this month on the amount and what goods the sanctions would target.

The US lost its final appeal in the billion-dollar trade dispute over subsidies to cotton growers on Monday, giving Brazil the right to ask the WTO to authorize retaliatory trade sanctions until Washington scraps the subsidies.

Azevedo said, "We're going to ask for the authorization to retaliate. The only alternative (to the sanctions) is if the United States takes steps to fully comply with the WTO ruling, but this is an unlikely scenario."

Last month, US legislators overturned a veto by US President George W. Bush and forced through a farm bill that will largely maintain the cotton payments for the next five years.

Brazil and several West African cotton-producing countries have long argued that their farmers suffer because of Washington's payments to US cotton growers, which amount to some $3 billion a year, with Brazil warning that any sanctions imposed will likely target US trademarks, patents and commercial services

    • Bolivia takes control of gas firm

The Bolivian government has taken full control of a key gas pipeline company after talks with the foreign firm that held a controlling stake broke down.

President Evo Morales said Transredes had been seized after US company Ashmore Energy International failed to agree to a share buy-back.

Transredes transports Bolivia's natural gas to clients in Brazil and Argentina.

President Morales said Ashmore had agreed to sell some of its 25% share in the firm but that these talks had not led to a deal.

It is the latest move in the Bolivian president's recent effort to nationalize key industries.
