Fake Plastic Surgeon To Face Prison Term
ARSEILLE, France (Reuters) - A French court sentenced a doctor on Monday to three years in jail for posing as a plastic surgeon and endangering patients by operating on them illegally in a derelict Marseille clinic.
Michel Maure went on trial in June accused of luring hundreds of patients to the dirty premises under false pretences between 2002 and 2004 and carrying out painful, unhygienic operations on them.
Maure was also sentenced to pay a 75,000 euro ($107,600) fine and to compensate his victims, about 100 of whom had complained of disfigurement and permanent damage to their health.
He went on the run while the court prepared its ruling and was arrested in Spain on August 19 after being spotted on a luxury yacht. Spain is expected to hand him over to France within days.
Maure was a qualified doctor but not a trained plastic surgeon. He was struck off the list of recognized French doctors in 2007 over his activities at the Marseille clinic.

Pictures of first person to undergo plastic surgery released
Walter Yeo, a wounded First World War soldier, became the first person to undergo plastic surgery.
Walter sustained terrible facial injuries including the loss of upper and lower eyelids while manning the guns as a sailor aboard HMS Warspite in 1916. In 1917 he was treated by Sir Harold Gillies - the first man to use skin grafts from undamaged areas on the body - and know as 'the father of plastic surgery'.
The young sailor was given new eyelids with a 'mask' of skin grafted across his face and eyes.
Artist Paddy Hartley, 37, has previously used the images in an exhibition and is now attempting to track down Walter's family to find out what happened to him. Paddy said: "This tragedy catalysed the surgeon to transform the fledgling discipline of plastic surgery. Walter Yeo last went for treatment at the Royal Naval Hospital in Plymouth 1938, but little else is known about him. It would be interesting to know what happened to him in the years that followed. I'm keen to find out how he and his family coped with the consequences of his injuries and subsequent surgery." The new boob job: Redistributing fat from your butt to your boobs
There's a new form of cosmetic breast enhancement: it involves taking fat from your butt and putting it in your boobs. Doctors have experimented with augmenting breasts with fat before, the Wall Street Journal reports, but that led to "hard lumps or calcifications" because the fat "died" once it was grafted.
But did you know that a decade ago, it was discovered that fat has stem cells in it that are similar to the stem cells in bone marrow? The new fat put into breast tissue is sent to a lab prior to insertion, so that the stem cells within can be fortified. This process is all the rage in Asia and parts of Europe, where women are paying "$15,000 to $30,000 or more depending on the surgeon and clinic," according to the Wall Street Journal.
There are major, as yet-unexplored risks, the Journal notes. "Some doctors worry the fat, when reinjected in the breast, could calcify and interfere with mammographic cancer screening. Another concern is that fat injections could increase the risk of breast cancer, because certain anticancer drugs work in postmenopausal women by inhibiting the production of estrogen, a hormone in fat tissue."
But that hasn't stopped some U.S. doctors, like Jafar Koupaie, from performing the FDA-not approved surgery. In fact, Koupie was generous enough to perform the controversial procedure on his wife.
Cytori is looking into marketing a device that "combines fat with a mixture of stem cells and other regenerative cells," and there are real ailments like cardiovascular disease (and of course, breast reconstruction for those who have had mastectomies) that could be treated with the potent stem cell combo. 'Doctor death' plastic surgeon accused of mutilating 96 patients goes on...
A plastic surgeon who operated an unlicenced clinic and is accused of mutilating 96 patients has gone on the run following his trial in France.
Michel Maure, 59, who claimed be one of the world's top cosmetic surgeons, is reported to have fled from the Spanish coast on an 18-metre yacht. His partner and children are also missing.
He is charged with involuntary wounding, aggravated fraud and making misleading claims about himself on an Internet site, magicclinic.com, and had been ordered to stay in the Marseilles region while judges considered their verdict, which is due next month.
Before being struck off the medical register last year, he boasted that he was "one of the great aesthetic surgeons of the world", the trial was told. He said that he had carried out 15,000 operations.
An anaesthetist by training, Mr Maure inflicted physical and psychological suffering on his victims in botched operations involving breast implants, liposuction, facelifts and nose remodelling, the court heard.
The case has particularly morbid resonance for French speakers because Docteur Maure is pronounced like Docteur Mort, which means Doctor Death.
Is this yet another good reason not to go under the knife? Or just evidence that you should *really* do your homework if you're going to get some surgical enhancements? Would you consider plastic surgery from a clinic you read about online? If you've had surgery already, how did you choose your clinic? What advice would you give to someone looking for a surgeon?
