Northern Star not as constant as expected: scientists at loss
Shakespeare's Julius Caesar once described himself as "constant as the Northern Star/ Of whose true-fix'd and resting quality/ There is no fellow in the firmament". But far from staying firm and fixed, the North Star has thrown astronomers into confusion with some unexpected activity.
The star is not, it seems, quite as constant as was previously thought. Polaris had long been known to be a Cepheid variable star, changing in brightness about every four days. But in recent decades astronomers have noticed the star's vibrations were dying away. Now they have been stunned to discover the star seems to have come back to life again.
The discovery will be announced to 350 international delegates today on the first day of the Cool Stars 15 conference at the University of St Andrews. Dr Alan Penny from the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of St Andrews will tell the conference that he was part of an international team of astronomers who observed that vibrations in the Pole star, which had been fading away to almost nothing over the past hundred years, have recovered and are now increasing.
The astronomers were watching Polaris in the expectation that they would catch the star switching off its vibrations completely when they made the surprising observation of their revival. Dr Penny said: "One hundred years ago Polaris varied by 10 per cent, but over the last century the variations became smaller and smaller until ten years ago it only varied by 2 per cent. It was thought the structure of the star was changing to switch off the vibration. Yet the team has found that about ten years ago the vibrations started picking up and are now back up at the 4 per cent level."
Cepheid stars are generally known to get brighter and fainter every four days, but the details of their variations are not well understood. Dr Penny said he was pleased the existing theory had been proved wrong, because it would further astronomical understanding. "Now we know it's doing this we will watch it for another 100 years and see what it does," he said. "We have found something new that we need to understand. That means we can make progress. We are very excited when we are proved wrong."
The slow decline in the vibrations in the star was in itself unusual, as no other Cepheid is known to have done this. Astronomers thought Polaris was ageing and its structure was changing so that it was no longer unstable. The scientists were following its progress to learn about how stars age. But now Polaris has started vibrating again, this explanation of the ageing process seems unlikely.
The scientists think a more complex process may be at work, which will require extra studying before it is understood.

Jupiter could cause Mecury to smash into the Earth
Three separate groups of scientists have used different computer simulations to predict the same frightening outcome. It is possible the massive gravitational pull of Jupiter could put the planet Mercury on a collision course with Earth.
The findings indicate that the solar system is not as stable as previously thought and that Mercury is susceptible to being pulled around on its orbit. This could lead to one of four scenarios:

Sex & The Shoe: shoes by sign
With the film version of Sex in the City hitting cinemas at the end of the month, it got me thinking about shoes. Why is it that some women are obsessed with owning the latest designer labels, while many of us just want to keep our feet protected from the elements? As an astrologer it's innate in me to question why a person does what they do.
When it comes to the art of shoe wearing, my logic tells me it's more about our how we feel about shoes than how we think about them. I therefore feel wearing the right shoe is more about our moon sign then our sun sign. Case in point, I am a Libra with a Leo rising, with this combination I should own a thousand pair of designer shoes. However, with my Virgo moon, to me, when I shop for a pair of shoes, it's all about being practical. I don't need a closet full of shoes that is going to give me more to clean up around.

One in eight Biology teachers still teaches Creationism
According to a study published in 'Public Library of Science Biology', one in eight U.S. high school Biology teachers presents creationism as a valid alternative to evolution.
Only 32% of the 900 teachers who responded the poll thought that creationism should be taught as "scientifically unsound", while 12% called creationism a "valid scientific alternative to Darwinian explanations for the origin of species," and the same number said that "many reputable scientists view these as valid alternatives to Darwinian theory."

Direct Dalai Dialog Confirmed By Chinese, But The Stars Say It’ll Be Stymied And F...
With the Olympic torch serving a catalyst, it seems that the Chinese government is bowing under the weight of international pressure and is seeking to resume a dialog with the Dalai Lama. Xinhua, the official Chinese government press agency, has announced that direct talks between government officials and a representative of the exiled Tibetan leader are likely to begin in the "coming days." Xinhua quoted an unnamed official government source in a statement released today (April 25).
"In view of the requests repeatedly made by the Dalai side for resuming talks, the relevant department of the central government will have contact and consultation with Dalai's private representative in the coming days."
The Chinese government has repeatedly claimed that the Dalai Lama is behind the recent protests and violence in China, and has accused him of "scheming and instigating."
Referring to the charges in his statements, the official is quoted as saying, "It is hoped that through contact and consultation, the Dalai side will take credible moves to stop activities aimed at splitting China, stop plotting and inciting violence and stop disrupting and sabotaging the Beijing Olympic Games so as to create conditions for talks."
As we reported last week, the Dalai Lama had indicated that "some efforts" were being made with regards to diplomacy. When asked about China's latest overtures on Friday, the Dalai Lama's spokesman, Tenzin Taklha, said they had yet to be officially contacted by the Chinese government, but would be open to talks.
"Since His Holiness is committed to dialog, we would welcome this," said Taklha. "We also have to look at when the offer does officially arrive."
With the Tibetan troubles threatening to overshadow the Beijing Olympics, and mounting pressure from international governments (including our own) for China to resume talks with the Dalai Lama, it's questionable whether this is merely a public relations exercise as opposed to an attempt at sincere and meaningful dialog. The Daily Mantra therefore thought we'd consult with a practitioner of the ancient Chinese art of astrology to gain some insight into the situation.
Looking at the Dalai Lama's astrological chart (he's a home loving Cancer BTW), our experts tell us that the "transiting Saturn in Virgo is weighing heavily on the 72-year-old" and that any talks with the Chinese are likely to be "stymied and frustrating."
On the plus side, since Saturn also rules accomplishment, we're told that "these talks may ultimately create a stronger foundation from which to negotiate Tibet's freedom." Oops sorry, since freedom is a dirty word as far the Chinese government is concerned when used in reference to Tibet, perhaps those pesky, all-seeing stars are just predicting some form of "autonomy" (a word The People's Republic seems marginally more comfortable with). For now, we'll just have to wait and see how the fortune cookie crumbles.

Astrological Compatibility: Love Or Lust? A Fun Fling Or For Life?

What's the secret to a long and happy marriage? We can look to the sky for a clue. As an astrologer one of the biggest questions I get is "when will I find the right person and how do I know if he/she is right for me?" Most people just look at their sun sign and wonder if they can be compatible with another person. Unfortunately, or hopefully luckily, there's more to finding a successful, lasting relationship than just knowing a person's sun sign.
When I do relationship readings for couples I compare several planets in a person's chart and how they interact. I am big on a person's sun and moon sign comparison and what houses they fall into in the others person's chart. The moon represents our emotions and how we feel about things plus it's a very karmic point. If your moon sign falls in your partners' 12th house and/or is near their ascendant that typically tells me that this isn't the first lifetime you've have shared together. It doesn't necessarily mean you will live happily ever after, but it does show that there is purpose and meaning and even some unfinished business that must be addressed in this lifetime.
Beyond the moon sign I compare a person's lunar node and how that may interact with the other person's sun or moon sign, since, again, the node is another indication of past life experiences together. Knowing your time of birth is very important when it comes to knowing if a relationship has staying power, because where your planets line up in your partners natal houses further shows how the energy of that planet will be expressed.
Of course we want to compare our Venus' (the planet of love) and Mars (the planet that rules our sexuality and drive). If these planets are compatible in air signs it may show that you have a great ability to communicate well with each other. In fire signs, it may indicate your relationship is very sexually driven with a lot of excitement. In water signs, you feel very intuitive with this person.
As far as longevity for the relationship, it's always important to compare the person's Saturn and Venus because these two planets together represent our karma and our love. If we look at charts of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, who are one of Hollywood's longest lasting marriages we will see that his Venus is conjunct her Saturn in Capricorn in her 12th house and his Saturn makes a trine to her Venus in water signs.

Spitzer's Astrology Chart Says ...
Eliot Spitzer and is wife Silda are ruled by opposite signs of the zodiac. He's a duplicitous Gemini, and she's an intelligent, free-spirited Sagittarius. But though opposites attract, will the current storm they're facing together ultimately force them apart?
Eliot Spitzer, born on June 10, 1959 appeared to be blessed astrologically with all of the fire and air in his chart. With his Sun and Mercury in the sign of Gemini, Eliot has a great ability to outwit people with his communication skills, getting them to give him what he wants. With his Venus, Mars and Uranus (and possibly his moon) in Leo, it gives him the charm and charisma to get people eating out of his hands.
Inwardly this man has a very huge ego and always questions himself on what he really wants. He came into this life like the wolf in sheep's clothing, where in past lives he was ruthless and controlling. One of his biggest challenges this time around is to learn how to balance and develop relationships. Realizing this, makes me wonder what the real deal is in his union with his own wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, born December 12, 1957.
It doesn't appear that the two of them are very sexually compatible. I feel Silda is the brains in this relationship. She is also the one who is intent on creating the perfect public image so the world doesn't really know what is going on behind closed doors between the both of them. I feel her lack of intimacy and her inability to express herself emotionally is what led Eliot into the arms of an escort service. He's a man who needs and seeks a lot of attention and he wasn't getting it at home. So with his power, influence and ego he went after the unobtainable, or in this case, the forbidden.
So why now, why the fall from grace for the Spitzer family? Both Eliot and Silda have a very difficult aspect transiting in their birth charts. Both are experiencing the planet Saturn crossing over their natal Pluto in the sign of Virgo. Saturn rules karma, Pluto's gig is all about death and regeneration, and Virgo is all about truth. My take on this is that Eliot and Silda need a lot of soul searching and healing in order to understand what drove their marriage to this level. This could be the one relationship in recent years that has experienced sexual scandal, that doesn't stand the test of time. Unlike many other political relationships, Silda doesn't need Eliot to gain the professional success she is capable of achieving on her own.
