    • Cheap DVDs: HMV to use tax loophole

A controversial tax avoidance scheme which HMV operates on its website is to be extended to the high street, allowing customers to buy DVDs, CDs, Blu-ray Discs, and games for lower prices from instore kiosks.

The items will be free from the usual 17.5% VAT charges on conventional purchases, as the items are subsequently delivered to the customer from the Channel Islands tax haven of Guernsey.

If copied by other high-street chains and supermarkets, it could divert hundreds of millions of pounds from the Treasury. Woolworths is also testing similar terminals in three stores.

    • Is your local grocery store selling tainted meat?

It will soon get a lot easier to tell if you're at risk for buying meat products involved in a government recall.

The USDA will begin listing retail stores receiving meat and poultry products involved in Class I recalls - those of the most serious concern to public health - instead of just providing package codes and expiration dates, as it does now. This way, consumers can easily identify if meat they have already purchased might be involved in a recall.

    • Razor blades in your bikini bottoms: anti-FGM campaigners take it too far?

The Association of Women Against Genital Mutilation has unveiled an ad campaign that sees a razor blade-themed campaign slogan disguised as one of those little panty-liner shaped 'gusset protectors' (note to self: gusset is my new favourite word) in bikini bottoms on sale in shops.

      http://bp2.blogger.com/__XCWUd8FFjQ/SHJXkHFCIEI/AAAAAAA...

"Every year 2 million girls worldwide are unable to avoid genital mutliation"

AWAGM seeks to make the issue unavoidable, by putting it right there in your face and, er, your crotch.

I imagine you'd get a bit of a surprise in the changing room when you went to try the bikini on. But are such powerful tactics legitimate?

And in reality, what can individuals do to stop FGM taking place? Is it the women buying bikinis that really have the power to bring an end to FGM?

    • Paying by fingerprint at the supermarket

Customers of a German supermarket chain will soon be able to pay for their shopping by placing their finger on a scanner at the check-out.

An Edeka store in the southwest German town of Ruelzheim has piloted the technology since November, cutting out on time otherwise wasted scrabbling for coins or cards.

      Paying with your fingerprint
The company plans to equip its stores across the region with the new technology.

Store manager Roland Fitterer said: "All customers need do is register once with their identity card and bank details, then they can shop straight away".

The technology is based on comparing the shopper's fingerprint with those stored in its database along with account details. Edeka bosses said they were confident the system could not be abused. The chance of two people having the same fingerprint is about one in 220 million.
